A detailed study of the obstetric services in Lusaka is presented. The maternal and perinatal mortality rates for 1976 were estimated at 1.7 and 55.1 per 1000 live births respectively. The persistent increase in mortality suggests a fall of accepted standards of maternity care. The causes of deaths are discussed. Avoidable factors were identified in 79.6% of the maternal deaths and 49.1% of the stillbirths. Recommendations are made for a more integrated type of maternity service, provisions of maternity centres, education programmes for the public and a more thorough perinatal care. Only a con

INTRODUCTION: The disparity in maternal mortality and severe morbidity between high- and low-income countries is well established. Previously, we highlighted within-country disparities in Ethiopia using demographic and health survey data. This study used enhanced obstetric surveillance data to detect subnational hotspot areas and factors associated with disparities in severe maternal morbidity in eastern Ethiopia.
METHODS: This study used data from the Ethiopian Obstetric Surveillance System (EthOSS) study, which collected data for all women who experienced severe maternal morbidity in 13 hos…

BACKGROUND: Differences in health resources between rural and urban areas were identified as an important factor hindering the further reduction of maternal mortality ratio (MMR). However, few studies were conducted to analyze the trends and causes between them. Jinan in eastern China was selected as the research site, and differences and trends in maternal deaths from 1991 to 2025 were analyzed to provide suggestions for government departments to formulate targeted measures.
METHODS: Data such as the number of live births, maternal deaths, and causes of deaths were collected from paper files…

Background and aim: The death of a woman while pregnant or within 42 days of delivery, regardless of the cause of death, or even up to one year after the end of the pregnancy, due to causes related to or aggravated by pregnancy remains a critical public health problem globally and in Colombia. While the country shows a general decreasing trend (preliminary Maternal Mortality Ratio 38.6/100,000 live births in 2023), significant regional disparities persist. Understanding precise underlying causes, especially in high-complexity referral centers, is vital. This study describes the sociodemographi…

BACKGROUND: The fifth Millennium Development Goal aims to improve maternal health by reducing maternal mortality by 75% from 1990 to 2015. Consequently, utilizing quality care indicators and performance evaluations is crucial for providing effective services. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of care for critically ill mothers in hospitals through action research.
METHODS/DESIGN: This study involves action research utilizing reform cycles, including focus group meetings with the head of the midwifery office, maternity hospital officials, gynecologists, and midwives from Mashhad Univers…

OBJECTIVE: To determine the factors contributing to hospital-based maternal deaths in Indonesia, given most women deliver with skilled birth attendants and in health facilities.
METHODS: A retrospective review of case records examined quality of care issues related to maternal mortality in hospital settings. The review abstracted information from blinded medical records of 90 women who died in 11 hospitals from January to June 2014. Specialists from the Indonesian Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology reviewed abstracted records to determine causes of death and identify contextual factors for …

INTRODUCTION: Antenatal care is concerned mainly with prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of general medical and pregnancy associated disorders. Quality of care varies across health facilities; the booking status of the women who deliver would have influence on the pregnancy outcome.
METHOD: A comparative study of caesarean section outcome among the booked and unbooked mothers delivered at Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.
RESULTS: Mean age of the women was 29.7 +/- 5.9 years. The booked mothers were older than the unbooked mothers. All the maternal deaths were amon

OBJECTIVE: To define the rate of severe maternal morbidity in different modes of delivery and to find out if the rate of severe morbidity has changed over a 5-year time span.
DESIGN: Retrospective register-based study.
SETTING: Finnish Medical Birth Registry and Hospital Discharge Registry.
POPULATION: All singleton deliveries in Finland in 1997 and 2002 (n=110,717).
METHODS: Diagnoses and operative interventions recorded in the Hospital Discharge Registry indicating a severe maternal complication were linked with Birth Register data and compared by mode of delivery: spontaneous vaginal de

BACKGROUND: Previous research on the association between maternal HIV status and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa was published between 2005-2011. Findings from these studies showed a higher child mortality risk among children born to HIV-positive mothers. While the population of women with disabilities is growing in developing countries, we found no research that examined the association between maternal disability in HIV-positive mothers, and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined the potential compounding effect of maternal disability and HIV status on child mortali

OBJECTIVES: To use PERISTAT data on indicators of maternal mortality and morbidity to explore maternal health outcomes in Europe, and to discuss the implications of variations in the data sources for these indicators.
STUDY DESIGN: The PERISTAT feasibility study provides the source for this descriptive study, covering 15 European countries. Maternal mortality ratios are calculated, and data to describe maternal mortality by age, cause of death and mode of delivery are pooled for the countries that provided data.
RESULTS: Data presented show an increased risk of maternal death among older mot…

The HIV/AIDS epidemic intersects with the problem of maternal mortality in many circumstances. The extent of the contribution of HIV/AIDS to maternal mortality is difficult to quantify, as the HIV status of pregnant women is not always known. HIV infection and AIDS-related deaths have become one of the major causes of maternal mortality in many resource-poor settings. HIV impacts on direct (obstetrical) causes of maternal mortality by an associated increase in pregnancy complications such as anaemia, post-partum haemorrhage and puerperal sepsis. HIV is also a major indirect cause of maternal m…
