In a prospective study the distribution of Toxic-1 (TSST-1) antibody titers was proved by 236 menstruating, tampon using volunteers. They are divided in 7 different age groups. Up to 11% of the volunteers under 25 years had no TSST-1 antibody-titers at all. Over 25 years of age this could be detected. In the group over 40 years of age 98% were found with antibody-titers up than 1:100. So it may be suggested that there is no general causal relationship between any type of tampon on TSS.

Two young women with toxic shock syndrome are reported and compared with three previous New Zealand cases. Both presented with fulminant diarrhoea, confusion, collapse and an erythematous desquamating rash. One, complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation, rhabdomyolysis, myoglobinuria and renal failure, recovered following peritoneal dialysis. Two patients presenting with anovulation and secondary infertility were treated with clomiphene citrate. Intermittent blood samples were obtained for the first three months of therapy in each case. One patient failed either to ovulate or menstruate in response to clomiphene and the other patient had only two episodes of cyclical bleeding before she too became amenorrhoeic. Hormonal analyses revealed that both women had undergone a rapid and precocious menopausal transition which has persisted throughout the subsequent three years.

The authors studied the effects of a combined oestrogenprogestogen treatment on the natural history of mammary tumours during a maximum period of seven and a half years. The group consisted of 135 patients divided into two on an age basis, sixty-six women still menstruating, and sixty-nine menopausal. A statistical study has shown that there is no significant difference between the treated and non-treated groups in the two groups of women studied. One can therefore deduce that the treatment has no effect on the evolution of mammary tumours whatever the age of the patient.
