Tracking Varroa Parasitism Using Handheld Infrared Cameras: Is Eusocial Fever the Key?

The Varroa destructor is the most significant bee parasite and the greatest threat to bee health all around the world. Due to its hidden lifestyle, detection within the brood cell is only possible through invasive techniques. Enhancing detection methods is essential for advancing research on population dynamics, spread, selection efforts, and control methodologies against the mite. In our study, we employed infrared imaging to measure the thermal differences in parasite and intact Apis mellifera worker broods. Experiments were conducted over two years at the MATE Kaposvár Campus in Hungary inv

Residual effect of commonly used insecticides on key predatory mites released for biocontrol in strawberry.

Florida is the second largest producer of strawberries in the United States. However, the production system faces numerous challenges, especially Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) infestations. Management of this pest involves applying insecticides and use of predatory mites, particularly Amblyseius swirskii Athias-Henriot, Neoseiulus cucumeris Oudemans, and Neoseiulus californicus McGregor (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae). Strawberry growers in Florida are concerned about the compatibility of the commercial formulations of insecticides used in strawberry pest management with pr

Structure-based in silico design and in vitro acaricidal activity assessment of Acacia nilotica and Psidium guajava extracts against Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi.

Infestation by Sarcoptes scabiei var. cuniculi mite causes scabies in humans and mange in animals. Alternative methods for developing environmentally friendly and effective plant-based acaricides are now a priority. The purpose of this research was the in silico design and in vitro evaluation of the efficacy of ethanol extracts of Acacia nilotica and Psidium guajava plant leaves against S. scabiei. Chem-Draw ultra-software (v. 12.0.2.1076.2010) was used to draw 36 distinct compounds from these plants that were employed as ligands in docking tests against S. scabiei Aspartic protease (SsAP). Wi

Efficacy of ivermectin against the mange mite Sarcoptes scabiei var suis in pigs.

The efficacy of ivermectin administered by esophageal intubation in a single dose was evaluated against the mange mite Sarcoptes scabiei var suis in 24 naturally infested pigs. Six pigs were allocated to each of the 4 treatment groups. Control (group 1) pigs were given nonmedicated water, group 2 were given ivermectin at 300 micrograms/kg of body weight, group 3 were given ivermectin at 400 micrograms/kg, and group 4 were given ivermectin at 500 micrograms/kg. The pigs were examined for S scabiei before treatment and on days 7, 14, 21, and 28 after treatment. Of the 18 ivermectin-treated pigs,

Evaluation of Nano-Niclosamide in Killing Demodex folliculorum In Vitro and the Potential Application in Ocular Surface.

Background/Objectives: Blepharitis is a condition often caused by Demodex folliculorum infestations, resulting in significant ocular discomfort and surface damage. Current treatments offer only temporary relief and fail to eliminate mites effectively. This study evaluates nano-niclosamide (nano-NCL), a lipophilic nanosuspension designed to enhance solubility and permeability, for targeting Demodex folliculorum. Methods: Nano-NCL was characterized by particle size, zeta potential, transmission electron microscopy, pH measurement, bacterial culture, and HPLC. Viable Demodex mites were collected

Characterisation of thymol effects on RDL receptors from the bee parasite Varroa destructor.

A major contributor to bee colony decline is infestation with its most devastating pest, the mite Varroa destructor. To control these mites, thymol is often used, although how it achieves this is not understood. One well-documented action of thymol is to modulate GABA-activated ion channels, which includes insect RDL receptors, a known insecticidal target. Here we have cloned two Varroa RDL subunits, one of which is similar to the canonical RDL subunit, while the other has some differences in M4, and, to a lesser extent, M2 and its binding site loops. Expression of this unusual RDL receptor in

Scabies: a ubiquitous neglected skin disease.

Scabies has been a scourge among human beings for thousands of years. Its worldwide occurrence with epidemics during war, famine, and overcrowding is responsible for an estimated 300 million people currently infested. Scabies refers to the various skin lesions produced by female mites, and their eggs and scybala that are deposited in the epidermis, leading to delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction. Recent immunological findings such as cross-reactivity with house dust mite allergens and an altered T-helper-1/T-helper-2 pattern contribute to a better understanding of the pathomechanism. Further

Serum levels of tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) versus immunoglobulins (IgG., IgM., and IgE.) in Egyptian scabietic children.

The tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha or Cachectin) is a protein produced mainly by macrophages, with a wide range of biological activities and in inflammatory process. On the other hand, scabies is a skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei which is typified by severe itching (particularly at night), red papules and often secondary infection. The female mite tunnels in the skin to lay her eggs and the newly hatched mites pass easily from person to person by contact. Commonly the infested areas are the groin, penis, nipples and the skin between the fingers. In this paper, the serum level

Herbivores with similar feeding modes interact through the induction of different plant responses.

Plants respond to attacks by herbivores with various defences, which are mounted through the activation of different biochemical pathways that are known to interact. Thus, the attack of a plant by one herbivore species may result in changes in the performances of other species on the same plant. It has been suggested that species with comparable feeding modes induce similar plant defences and such herbivores are therefore expected to have a negative effect on each other's performance. We studied two closely related phytophagous mite species with identical feeding modes. Yet, one of the species

Evidence that scabies mites (Acari: Sarcoptidae) influence production of interleukin-10 and the function of T-regulatory cells (Tr1) in humans.

We performed experiments to determine whether an extract of Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) influenced cytokine expression by human T-lymphocytes. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from five sensitized donors and four donors without sensitization to scabies mites were challenged with a T-cell mitogen alone, with scabies extract (SS) alone, or with mitogen and SS together. Supernatants were analyzed for the cytokines interferon-gamma (IFNgamma), interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, and IL-10. No IL-2 or IL-4 was produced in response to scabies extract. Cells from both naive and sensitized donors produced lar

Sarcoptic mange in cattle: Effects of treatment with eprinomectin topical solution on performance, behavior changes, and adrenal and systemic responses to ACTH challenge.

Bovine sarcoptic mange can cause significant pruritus and skin disease which compromise the health and welfare of the animals, impairs animal productivity and is furthermore of zoonotic concern. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of efficacious treatment of sarcoptic mange on performance and on animal welfare using behavioral indicators and adrenal reactivity testing. Sixteen young cattle with induced sarcoptic mange were allocated by restricted randomization based on body weight to an untreated group (control) or a treated group (eprinomectin 5 mg/mL topical solution [EPRINEX® P

Habitat correlates with the spatial distribution of ectoparasites on Peromyscus leucopus in southern Michigan.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the role of habitat in determining ectoparasite distribution of Peromyscus leucopus. We tested the hypothesis that ectoparasite occurrence is associated with particular host environments and this association is stronger for ectoparasites with limited interactions (i.e., ticks) than those with frequent interactions (i.e., lice). Ectoparasites from three different groups (Acari, Siphonaptera, and Phthiraptera) were collected from P. leucopus inhabiting a number of forested habitats in southern Michigan. Measurements of plant species structure and compositio

[Psychiatric and parasitologic aspects of dermatozoon delusion].

Patients suffering from delusional parasitosis are not only seen by psychiatrists, but more often by dermatologists and parasitologists. Previous results published by researchers of differing specialities led to somewhat contradictory opinions concerning these patients. The main goals of the present study were, on the one hand, to examine the various and partly controversial hypotheses, which were mostly based on single case observations in a substantial sample of 107 patients with delusional parasitosis and, on the other hand, to investigate possible differences between patients who consulted

Combining plant- and soil-dwelling predatory mites to optimise biological control of thrips.

The efficiency of a natural enemy combination compared to a single species release for the control of western flower thrips (WFT) Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) on cucumber plants was investigated. Since a large part of F occidentalis seems to enter the soil passage, a joint release of the plant-inhabiting predatory mite Amblyseius cucumeris (Oudemans) that feeds on thrips first-instar larvae and the soil-dwelling predatory mite Hypoaspis aculeifer (Canestrini) that preys on thrips pupae in the ground might offer a promising approach for a holistic control strategy. Therefore, two sets
