Loneliness Among Adults Aging With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: The Importance of Living Situation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Loneliness is a serious public health concern among the aging population. Not only is loneliness an unpleasant emotional experience but it is also associated with worse health, well-being, and even mortality. This is a particularly important issue among the population aging with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who are more likely to experience loneliness across the life course, and who-particularly if living in an intermediate care facility (ICF) or nursing facility-may lack social connections. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2012

Predictors of low back pain in nursing home workers after implementation of a safe resident handling programme.

OBJECTIVES: Healthcare workers have high rates of low back pain (LBP) related to handling patients. A large chain of nursing homes experienced reduced biomechanical load, compensation claims and costs following implementation of a safe resident handling programme (SRHP). The aim of this study was to examine whether LBP similarly declined and whether it was associated with relevant self-reported occupational exposures or personal health factors. METHODS: Worker surveys were conducted on multiple occasions beginning with the week of first SRHP introduction (baseline). In each survey, the outcom

The analgesic response is moderated by nurses' confidence in their pain assessment: Results from pediatric acute pain study.

BACKGROUND: Managing acute pain in children remains challenging, and clinical decisions often depend on nurses' interpretation of both reported and behavioral pain cues. Nurse confidence in their assessments may influence treatment decisions and outcomes, yet evidence from real-world clinical settings is limited. PURPOSE: This study examined whether nurses' confidence in assessing children's pain moderates the relationship between analgesic type (opioid versus non-opioid) and pain reduction in pediatric patients. METHODS: A dyadic observational study was conducted in two hospitals with 120 c

Factors associated with nursing interventions to reduce incontinence in hospitalized older adults.

INTRODUCTION: The problem of incontinence in hospitalized elderly patients is rarely documented, and there is little research that determines why nurses choose to help or not help with this problem. Are hospital-based acute care nurses' attitudes and beliefs about incontinence associated with the perceived opportunity to assist the patient with the problem? What do hospital nurses know about causes and interventions relative to incontinence? METHODS: Two vignettes, one describing a patient with stress incontinence and one describing a patient with urge incontinence, were created. Questions me

Management strategies to mitigate burnout and turnover intention while enhancing patient safety in neonatal intensive care: an integrative review.

BACKGROUND: Globally, the nursing workforce shortage in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is evolving into a critical public health challenge. NICU nurses face a dual burden of high technical demands and intensive emotional labor, making them a high-risk group for professional burnout. The occupational wellbeing of nurses not only impacts individual health but also directly correlates with the clinical safety outcomes of preterm and ill neonates through the "health impairment process." OBJECTIVE: This study aims to introduce the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model as a systemic management

Tort Immunity and Nursing Home Staffing.

IMPORTANCE: A central goal of medical malpractice law is to ensure quality of care by deterring negligent treatment. Although previous research has produced mixed results, much of it finds no clear association between liability exposure and medical treatment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many states adopted immunity from tort liability for harms to nursing home residents, creating a natural experiment. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between immunity from tort liability and nursing home staffing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study using a difference-in-differences mo

Severity of insomnia and stress perception as a chained mediator between perceived social support and somatic symptoms in Chinese's nurses.

BACKGROUND: Social support is crucial for reducing nurses' somatic symptoms and insomnia, which are linked to stress perception. Understanding these relationships can help explain somatic symptom mechanisms in nursing staff. METHODS: We studied 293 front-line nurses using scales for perceived stress, social support, insomnia severity, and somatic symptoms. We analyzed the data with Pearson correlations and SPSS mediation model. RESULTS: Greater perceived social support was associated with fewer somatic symptoms, lower insomnia severity, and less perceived stress. Insomnia severity was linked
