Phonatory function can be reliably tested after vocal paralysis. After a review of 116 cases, 55 patients underwent objective testing. The clinical history of vocal ability and aspiration were found to be significantly correlated with measurements of phonatory mean flow rate (MFR), maximum phonation time (MPT), and maximum decibel output (SPL). A four-stage classification system, based on clinical and objective measurements, has been formulated. Serum levels of sialoglycoprotein constituents i.e., sialic acid, seromucoid hexoses, and mucoid proteins were determined in 34 patients with base tongue malignancy and 15 controls matched for age and sex. All three constituents were found to be significantly raised; however, only sialic acid levels increased with the severity of the disease. The present study was undertaken to examine the temporal relationship between exercise and QT interval shortening as one of the principal determinants for the functioning of QT pacemakers. Ten patients (mean age of 72.6 years) with implanted QT pacemakers were subjected to supine bicycle exercise with two different slopes, 90% and 80%. Gastric emptying rate was measured chronically using an electromagnetic probe inserted into the proximal duodenum via a duodenal cannula. Each duodenal gush was identified and its value calculated on the basis of pre-established threshold and timing criteria which eliminate shifts in the baseline and artefacts due to the presence of particles. The net flow of digestive contents and the aboral cumulative flow were displayed online. This system has been used in sheep for continuous measurement of duodenal flow over periods of 3-5 weeks.

Four patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea were monitored first in the supine posture to establish a diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (apnea indices 33, 12, 22, 36). A second polysomnogram, obtained while the patients slept in the lateral posture, showed a dramatic decrease in apnea (apnea indices 5, 0, 0.2, and 0) and snoring. Each patient had an enlarged uvula, which moved to the side in the lateral posture. We conclude that sleeping in the lateral posture may be therapeutic in some patients with obstructive sleep apneas.

Vibratory stimuli were used for diagnostic evaluation of 130 impotent patients. The stimuli were applied to the glans penis, and erectile response was measured and displayed on a recorder. Two young males who had no organic heart disease died unexpectedly during the night. In one patient, the monitor ECG showed a sinoatrial block and the electrophysiologic study revealed a sinoatrial conduction time at the upper limit of normal and a prolonged PA interval.
