Norm conflict and ingroup bias in children's polite and altruistic lies.

Prosocial lying supports children's social functioning, yet different types of prosocial lies may not follow the same group patterns. This study examined 7-, 9- and 11-year-old children's polite and altruistic lies towards ingroup and outgroup recipients and the role of theory of mind (ToM) in these behaviours. Polite lies showed a group-general pattern: children told them equally across group lines, independent of ToM. In contrast, altruistic lies displayed a marked ingroup bias that strengthened with higher ToM levels. These findings indicate that prosocial lies are context-sensitive and gov

Case Report on the Augmentation of Cognitive Processing Therapy with Spiritual Counseling to Address Faith-Based Concerns for an Operator with High Religiosity.

This case report describes treatment of a Special Operations Forces (SOF) Operator with high religiosity experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and moral injury after exposure to indirect combat-related trauma via real-time audiovisual drone feed. The patient completed virtual massed cognitive processing therapy (CPT) augmented by a single spiritual counseling session to address faith-based concerns interfering with trauma processing. Initial symptom exacerbation occurred early during CPT, but following spiritual counseling, the patient engaged more fully in therapy, leading to a si

Justified overstep: Children endorse caregivers' paternalistic decisions despite recognizing negative feelings.

Autonomy is a fundamental psychological need, yet parents often override it for children's own good--practicing paternalism. Do children see this as morally justified? In three preregistered studies, U.S. children aged 4-9 (N = 413; 51% female; 61% White) by default reacted more positively to caregivers' pro-autonomy decisions than to anti-autonomy decisions. However, when anti-autonomy decisions benefited them (Study 1), or another child acting out of ignorance (soft paternalism; Study 2) or deliberation (hard paternalism; Study 3), children judged such decisions to be fair and justified, des

Varieties of Experiences of Care.

The human sciences have witnessed a decades-long transition from an emphasis on theories centered on hermeneutics and the interpretation of meaning to a preoccupation with theories that privilege performance, action, and being/becoming. This essay develops out of the conceptual orientation of William James, which holds that all knowledge comes from experience, as well as the author's writings on what matters most to participants in local worlds. The essay shows how meaning and being/becoming are unified in moral life and understood as embodied and lived experiences of care and caregiving, and

Pride Before a Fall: Shame, Diagnostic Crossover, and Eating Disorders.

This paper discusses the findings of qualitative research that examined the accounts of five "mostly recovered" ex-patients who had experienced transition between two or more eating disorder diagnoses. This study found that, in the minds of participants, the different diagnostic labels were associated with various good or bad character traits. This contributed to the belief in a diagnostic hierarchy, whereby individuals diagnosed with anorexia nervosa were viewed as morally better than those diagnosed with bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder. Consequently, diagnostic crossover from a "bet

The Two tragedies argument.

Opposition to induced abortion rests on the belief that fetuses have a moral status comparable to beings like us, and that the loss of such a life is tragic. Antiabortion, or pro-life, theorists argue that (1) it is wrong to induce abortion and (2) it is wrong to allow others to perform induced abortion. However, evidence suggests that spontaneous abortion kills far more fetuses than induced abortion, and critics argue that most pro-life theorists neglect the threat of spontaneous abortion and ought to do more to prevent it. Friberg-Fernros contends such an obligation would be implausibly stro

Casualties.

Privation and disease have mainly killed soldiers until very recently. Now that enemy action predominates, faster and better control of bleeding and infection before and during evacuation spares ever more lives today. This essay focuses on psychological war wounds, placing them in the context of military casualties. The surgeon's concepts of 'primary' wounds in war, and of would 'complications' and 'contamination', serve as models for psychological and moral injury in war. 'Psychological injury' is explained and preferred to 'Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder', being less stigmatizing and more fa

Tragedy and Grenzsituationen in genetic prediction.

Philosophical anthropologies that emphasise the role of the emotions can be used to expand existing notions of moral agency and learning in situations of great moral complexity. In this article we tell the story of one patient facing the tough decision of whether to be tested for Huntington's disease or not. We then interpret her story from two different but compatible philosophical entry points: Aristotle's conception of Greek tragedy and Karl Jaspers' notion of Grenzsituationen (boundary situations). We continue by indicating some ways in which these two positions may be used for reflecting

Collective will: a reformulation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation.

A reevaluation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation has been proposed which equates collective and individual will as essential and mutually facilitative aspects of self-development. Rank's viewpoint regarding social and moral development as necessarily normative and, hence, inimical to individuation is therefore challenged and disputed. It is further argued that the nature of will is not a priori moral and that it should be conceptualized empirically as a derivative of the self. The negative will has been defined as the counterposition of two wills against each other. It has bee

Non-participation in chlamydia screening in The Netherlands: determinants associated with young people's intention to participate in chlamydia screening.

BACKGROUND: In The Netherlands, a national chlamydia screening program started in 2008, but the participation was low and the screening was not cost-effective. This study aimed to explore unconscious and conscious associations with chlamydia screening (16-29 year-olds). In addition, we examined whether information presented in chlamydia screening invitation letters had an effect on the evaluation of these determinants compared to a no-letter group. METHODS: An Internet survey was conducted that included self-report measures of attitude, susceptibility, severity, unrealistic optimism, subjecti

Is germline genome-editing person-affecting or identity-affecting, and does it matter?

Writers have debated whether germline genome-editing is person-affecting or identity-affecting. The difference is thought to be ethically relevant to whether we should choose genome-editing or choose preimplantation genetic diagnosis and embryo selection, when seeking to prevent or produce bad conditions (e.g., cystic fibrosis, or deafness) in the individuals who will grow from the embryo edited or selected. We consider the very recent views of three prominent bioethicists and philosophers who have grappled with this issue. We claim that both sides are right, but that the sense in which genome

'I think it's wrong, but it helps' - a focused ethnography of benzodiazepine practices in specialist palliative care.

Benzodiazepines are a class of drug extensively used in palliative care. Their use has predominantly been studied within a biomedical framework. Our study instead focused on the sociocultural aspects of benzodiazepine practices. We aimed to explore clinicians, patients and family members' values, beliefs, knowledge and feelings regarding use of benzodiazepines, including in-situ clinical decision-making processes, affects and actions. Social theory understandings of affect, the body and of suffering provided the theoretical lens through which data were analysed. Analysis generated the followin

Strong Bipartisan Support for Controlled Psilocybin Use as Treatment or Enhancement in a Representative Sample of US Americans: Need for Caution in Public Policy Persists.

The psychedelic psilocybin has shown promise both as treatment for psychiatric conditions and as a means of improving well-being in healthy individuals. In some jurisdictions (e.g., Oregon, USA), psilocybin use for both purposes is or will soon be allowed and yet, public attitudes toward this shift are understudied. We asked a nationally representative sample of 795 US Americans to evaluate the moral status of psilocybin use in an appropriately licensed setting for either treatment of a psychiatric condition or well-being enhancement. Showing strong bipartisan support, participants rated the i

The principle of procreative beneficence and its implications for genetic engineering.

Molecular genetic engineering technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 have made the accurate and safe genetic engineering of human embryos possible. Further advances in genomics have isolated genes that predict qualities and traits associated with intelligence. Given these advances, prospective parents could use these biotechnologies to genetically engineer future children for genes that enhance their intelligence. While Julian Savulescu's Principle of Procreative Beneficence (PPB) argues for the moral obligation of prospective parents to use in-vitro fertilization and preimplantation genetic diagnos

Emergency contraception - a human rights issue.

Emergency contraception is the only resource that women can use to avoid becoming pregnant after having sexual intercourse without contraceptive protection. It could be a powerful means to prevent unwanted pregnancies and their devastating consequences for women's health, social wellbeing and life project, and for the unwanted child, if all people had ample access to good quality information, education and services for sexual and reproductive health. In spite of the preventive medicine value of emergency contraception, conservative sectors oppose its availability, appealing to moral values tha

The effect of posttraumatic cognitions on PTSD in nonoffending parents of child sexual abuse: The aggravating role of negative self-compassion and emotive regulation.

OBJECTIVE: Nonoffending parents (NOPs) of children who have experienced sexual abuse often endure vicarious trauma and self-blame for not being able to protect their child, which can contribute to the development or worsening of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. This study examines the influence of posttraumatic cognitions on PTSD in NOPs of sexually abused children, aiming to elucidate the role of internalized posttraumatic cognitions through a novel model. In other populations, moral injury has been established as a factor exacerbating PTSD development and persistence, yet the i
