With rising cases for the first time in years, malaria remains a significant public health burden. The sexual stage of the malaria parasite infects mosquitoes to transmit malaria from host to host. Hence, an infected mosquito plays an essential role in malaria transmission. Plasmodium falciparum is the most dominant and dangerous malaria pathogen. Previous studies identified a sexual stage-specific protein 16 (Pfs16) localized to the parasitophorous vacuole membrane. Here, we elucidate the function of Pfs16 during malaria transmission. Our structural analysis identified Pfs16 as an alpha-helic

Dengue is considered non-endemic to mainland China. However, travellers frequently import the virus from overseas and local mosquito species … eak that occurred in Guangzhou showed that the outbreak could have lasted for another four weeks if mosquito control interventions had not been undertaken. Finally, we analyse the dengue transmission risk in mainland China. We find that southern China, including Guangzhou, can have more than seven months of dengue transmission per year while even Beijing, in the t …

Mosquitoes play a predominant role as leading agents in the spread of vector-borne diseases and the consequent mortality in humans. Despite reports on increase of new and recurrent mosquito borne-disease outbreaks such as chikungunya, dengue fever and Rift Valley fever in Kenya, little is known about the genetic characteristics and diversity of the vector species that have been incriminated in transmission of disease pathogens. In this study, mosquito species were collected from Kisumu city, Kilifi town and Nairobi city and we determined their genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships.

The mosquito is a very important vector involved in the worldwide transmission of disease-causing viruses and parasites. Controlling the mosquito population remains one of the best means for preventing the serious infectious diseases of malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis and so on and there has been an increasing interest in developing biopesticides as a useful substitute to chemical insecticides. As a result, Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis (Bti) has been extensively used due to its specificity and high toxicity to a variety of mosquito larvae. However it is prudent to seek a

INTRODUCTION: A number of studies have been conducted on the relationship between the distribution of mosquito abundance and meteorological variables. However, few studies have specifically provided specific ranges of temperatures for estimating the maximum abundance of mosquitoes as an empirical basis for climatic dynamics for estimating mosquito-borne infectious disease risks.
METHODS: Adult mosquitoes were collected for three consecutive nights/week using Mosquito Magnet® Independence® model traps during 2018 and 2019 at US Army Garrison (USAG) Humphreys, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, Rep

Mosquitoes, as vectors of numerous diseases, pose significant threat to human health. Aedes mosquitoes transmit diseases such as dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya, with dengue fever alone responsible for approximately 40,000 deaths and more than 96 million symptomatic cases annually. Current mosquito control methods are inadequate and results in environmental health hazards and development of resistance. Therefore, targeted control strategies are essential. In this context, we cloned and expressed the Trypsin Modulating Oostatic Factor (TMOF), a decapeptide that inhibits trypsin biosynthesi…

BACKGROUND: The use of genetically modified mosquitoes (GMMs) for the control of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases has been proposed in malaria-endemic countries, such as Nigeria, which has the largest burden in Africa. Scientists are major stakeholders whose opinions and perceptions can adversely affect the success of the trials of GMMs if they are not involved early. Unfortunately, information on the awareness of Nigerians scientists and their overall perception of the GMMs is practically non-existent in the literature. Therefore, this study aimed at understanding how receptive Niger

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) (Flavivirus: Flaviviridae) is a leading cause of encephalitis in eastern and southern Asia. The virus is maintained in a zoonotic cycle between ardeid wading birds and/or pigs and Culex mosquitoes. The primary mosquito vector of JEV is Culex tritaeniorhynchus, although species such as Cx. gelidus, Cx. fuscocephala, and Cx. annulirostris are important secondary or regional vectors. Control of JEV is achieved through human and/or swine vaccination, changes in animal husbandry, mosquito control, or a combination of these strategies. This review outlines the ecolo…

The mosquito Aedes aegypti is associated with the spread of many viral diseases in humans, including Dengue virus (DENVs), Yellow fever virus (YFV), Zika virus (ZIKV), and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV). Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is widely used as a biopesticide, which produces Cry toxins for mosquito control. The Cry toxins bind mainly to important receptors, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and aminopeptidase-N (APN). This work investigated the function of a C-type lectin, CTLGA9, in A. aegypti in response to Cry toxins. Our results showed by far-western blot and ELISA methods that the CTLT…

There is currently a great deal of interest in Wolbachia because of their wide distribution in arthropods and filarial nematodes and their striking effects on the biology of their hosts, including a possible role in speciation. They manipulate the reproduction of arthropod hosts through various effects on their hosts' biology, particularly cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), to increase the proportion of infected individuals in the population, often to the point of fixation. This ability of Wolbachia to sweep through host populations indicates several potential applications of Wolbachia in the c

Over the last two decades, a significant reduction has been seen in malaria-attributable morbidity and mortality but still, it remains a major public health burden in many countries. The outbreak of malaria due to climate change in some countries emphasizes the critical need for improved strategies to treat, prevent, and control malaria. Although WHO has recommended RTS, S/AS01, and R-21/Matrix-M (R21), these vaccines have shown lesser efficacy. The low efficacy of the vaccines emphasizes the need for discovering a promising vaccine. Present vaccines are parasite-based and can only reduce the

Several outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases have taken place in Europe in recent years. In Spain, both active and passive surveillance have demonstrated that dengue and West Nile viruses are currently circulating, and seven autochthonous dengue cases have been reported in the last 2 yr. The effectiveness of vector control programs largely depends on the accuracy of the taxonomic identification of the species. However, in Spain, identification almost completely relies on the use of morphological keys to characterize the mosquito fauna. This study investigates the congruence between molecular a

Despite centuries of enormous control efforts, mosquito-borne diseases continue to show upward trend of morbidity. According to WHO reports, malaria caused 438000 deaths in the year 2015 and dengue cases have been increased 30-fold over the last five decades. To control these diseases, it is necessary to understand the transmission dynamics of them among mosquitoes. There are some vertically transmitted mosquito-borne diseases which can also be spread among mosquitoes through sexual contact (e.g., dengue, zika, chikungunya). Recent experimental observations indicate that for virus persistence

Insecticide resistance poses a significant and increasing threat to the control of malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. We present a novel method of insecticide application based on netting treated with an electrostatic coating that binds insecticidal particles through polarity. Electrostatic netting can hold small amounts of insecticides effectively and results in enhanced bioavailability upon contact by the insect. Six pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles mosquito strains from across Africa were exposed to similar concentrations of deltamethrin on electrostatic netting or a standard long-las

Accurate identification of insect species is an indispensable and challenging requirement for every entomologist, particularly if the species is involved in disease outbreaks. The European MediLabSecure project designed an identification (ID) exercise available to any willing participant with the aim of assessing and improving knowledge in mosquito taxonomy. The exercise was based on high-definition photomicrographs of mosquitoes (26 adult females and 12 larvae) collected from the western Palaearctic. Sixty-five responses from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East were usable. The study dem

Mosquitoes rely heavily on olfactory cues for locating suitable oviposition sites, with microbial communities in aquatic habitats playing a crucial role in producing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that influence mosquito behaviour. In this study, we isolated Bacillus subtilis DHB13 from the breeding habitat of Culex quinquefasciatus, a major vector of several human diseases. The partial 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolate has been submitted to NCBI GenBank with the accession number PV698100. The identity and resistance profile of the strain was confirmed through biochemical and antibiotic

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasitic disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality in at-risk populations, especially in children in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite reductions in malaria burden owing to the scale-up of effective interventions, there are concerns that long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) effects may not be sustained owing to widespread insecticide resistance and differential impacts of LLIN on vector species. In this study, we aimed to test the effect of different LLIN products and other environmental factors on the ecological niche of three mosquito vector s

The Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe campus is inhabited by some 55,000 enrolled students as well as several mosquito species that can transmit West Nile virus, dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. The time of host-seeking of these vectors has not been quantified on the ASU Tempe campus, but this information is important to inform ground and/or truck-mount fogging operations targeting mosquitoes to prevent or control disease outbreaks. We quantified the time of host-seeking of the predominant mosquito vector species at the ASU Tempe campus during the post-monsoon season in 2021, us
