Delayed awakening from general anaesthesia in a patient with Hunter syndrome.

Hunter syndrome is one of a heterogeneous group of recessively inherited mucopolysaccharide storage diseases (MPS) with similar biochemical defects manifested by impairments in mucopolysaccharide catabolism with variable but progressive clinical courses. Abnormal accumulation and deposition of mucopolysaccharides in the tissue of several organs to numerous anatomical, musculoskeletal and neurological abnormalities which are known to complicate anaesthetic and airway management. Hunter syndrome has a wide variance of clinical phenotypes ranging from mild to severe. We present a patient having p

Prenatal diagnosis of fetal skeletal anomalies via whole-exome sequencing in a tertiary referral center.

The accurate prenatal diagnosis of skeletal anomaly (SKA) using prenatal imaging alone remains challenging. We aimed to investigate the efficacy of whole-exome sequencing (WES) in the prenatal molecular genetic diagnosis of skeletal system abnormalities, with or without additional ultrasound anomalies. All fetuses with SKA were subjected to sequential genetic tests, and after excluding fetal chromosomal abnormalities and clinically significant copy number variations (CNVs) consistent with the observed phenotype, the affected fetuses were further subjected to WES. The clinical features of fetal

Recurrence Rates Following Treatment of Spinal Vascular Malformations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Spinal vascular malformations (SVMs), including arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs), are a varied group of vascular lesions that can be subclassified according to localization, vascular structure, and hemodynamics. Early intervention is necessary to halt progression of disease and minimize irreversible dysfunction. We sought to characterize initial treatment success and recurrence rates following interventional treatment of various types of SVMs. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed following the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting

Ttc30a affects tubulin modifications in a model for ciliary chondrodysplasia with polycystic kidney disease.

Skeletal ciliopathies (e.g., Jeune syndrome, short rib polydactyly syndrome, and Sensenbrenner syndrome) are frequently associated with nephronophthisis-like cystic kidney disease and other organ manifestations. Despite recent progress in genetic mapping of causative loci, a common molecular mechanism of cartilage defects and cystic kidneys has remained elusive. Targeting two ciliary chondrodysplasia loci (ift80 and ift172) by CRISPR/Cas9 mutagenesis, we established models for skeletal ciliopathies in Xenopus tropicalis Froglets exhibited severe limb deformities, polydactyly, and cystic kidney

Improvement of Sleep Quality in Patients With Ankylosing Spondylitis Kyphosis After Corrective Surgery.

STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the changes in sleep quality in patients surgically treated for kyphosis due to ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and the correlation between these changes and spinal sagittal realignment. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sleep problems are prevalent in AS patients. However, little attention has been paid to the sleep quality in patients with AS kyphosis and the effect of surgical intervention on sleep quality. METHODS: We have retrospectively reviewed 62 patients with AS-induced thoracolumbar kyphosis who underwen

Molecular diagnosis of somatic overgrowth conditions: A single-center experience.

BACKGROUND: Somatic overgrowth conditions, including Proteus syndrome, Sturge-Weber syndrome, and PIK3CA-related overgrowth spectrum, are caused by post-zygotic pathogenic variants, result in segmental mosaicism, and give rise to neural, cutaneous and/or lipomatous overgrowth. These variants occur in growth-promoting pathways leading to cellular proliferation and expansion of tissues that arise from the affected cellular lineage. METHODS: We report on 80 serial patients evaluated for somatic overgrowth conditions in a diagnostic laboratory setting, including three prenatal patients. In total,

Thoracic skeletal anomalies following surgical treatment of esophageal atresia. Lessons from a national cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Thoracotomy as surgical approach for esophageal atresia treatment entails the risk of deformation of the rib cage and consequently secondary thoracogenic scoliosis. The aim of our study was to assess these thoracic wall anomalies on a large national cohort and search for factors influencing this morbidity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pediatric surgery departments from our national network were asked to send recent thoracic X-ray and operative reports for patients born between 2008 and 2010 with esophageal atresia. The X-rays were read in a double-blind manner to detect costal and ver

The limping child.

Limping is a symptom of varied diagnoses in children and adolescents and can present a difficult diagnostic challenge for primary care clinicians. A careful and systematic evaluation can shorten the long list of potential diagnoses to direct appropriate diagnostic tests to determine the cause of the problem. Trauma and infections are the most common causes of limping. Inflammatory conditions, developmental diagnoses, and overuse injuries are other causes. Although rare, malignancies such as osteosarcoma and blood cell cancers must also be considered as potential causes of limping in children an

Prevalence and score of minor physical anomalies in patients with schizophrenia and their first degree relatives: a Tunisian study.

UNLABELLED: Minor physical anomalies (MPAs) have been consistently reported to be more frequent in schizophrenia subjects. Limited research has been conducted on these anomalies among biological relatives of patients with schizophrenia. The aims of this study were to investigate the MPAs in a Tunisian population: subjects with schizophrenia, their healthy siblings and control subjects. This study hypothesized that the mean MPAs score would be greater in patients than controls and that siblings would have intermediate scores. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that MPAs scores would be associated

Cellular signaling by fibroblast growth factor receptors.

The 22 members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family of growth factors mediate their cellular responses by binding to and activating the different isoforms encoded by the four receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) designated FGFR1, FGFR2, FGFR3 and FGFR4. Unlike other growth factors, FGFs act in concert with heparin or heparan sulfate proteoglycan (HSPG) to activate FGFRs and to induce the pleiotropic responses that lead to the variety of cellular responses induced by this large family of growth factors. A variety of human skeletal dysplasias have been linked to specific point mutations in F

Long-term outcome in Desbuquois dysplasia: a follow-up in four adult patients.

Desbuquois dysplasia is a rare chondrodysplasia characterized by short stature, joint laxity, and specific radiographic findings. We report the natural history of four patients (three boys and one girl) with Desbuquois dysplasia ages 16-22 years. The mean height in adulthood was 114 cm (-8.5 SD) with progressive deceleration of the growth curve from birth (-4 SD) to adulthood. Obesity was noted consistently and facial abnormalities were still present but less obvious than in childhood. Three of four patients had mental retardation of varying degree. Hyperlaxity was persistent but limited motio

The relationship between static and dynamic postural deformities with pain and quality of life in non-athletic women.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of the postural condition with functional tests are used with the least facilities in the shortest time, for a wide the range of movements for different parts of the body. Both static and dynamic posture measurements are predictive of injury. These two assessments provide different information regarding posture control. Also, with the advancement of this technology, the speed of posture assessment and deformity diagnosis can be increased and done with the minimum facilities. This can signal a new method for the quick diagnosis of abnormalities and ultimately prevent

Breast Cancer Metastases Presenting as Musculoskeletal Complaints.

Breast cancer often metastasizes to the bone, leading to musculoskeletal symptoms that may mimic benign conditions. Patients with undiagnosed or recurrent malignancies may initially present to first-contact providers, including chiropractors, with non-specific spinal or musculoskeletal pain. Here, we extend the series with two additional cases, highlighting risks of delayed diagnosis, the role of imaging, and chiropractic care. In Case 1, a 62-year-old woman with a history of breast carcinoma presented with progressive left-sided sciatica-like symptoms (pain radiating from the sacroiliac regio

Musculoskeletal modeling and movement simulation for structural hip disorder research: A scoping review of methods, validation, and applications.

Musculoskeletal modeling is a powerful tool to quantify biomechanical factors typically not feasible to measure in vivo, such as hip contact forces and deep muscle activations. While technological advancements in musculoskeletal modeling have increased accessibility, selecting the appropriate modeling approach for a specific research question, particularly when investigating pathological populations, has become more challenging. The purposes of this review were to summarize current modeling and simulation methods in structural hip disorder research, as well as evaluate model validation and stu
