Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a distinctive lymphocyte rich vasoformative proliferation comprising epithelioid-appearing endothelial cells with partially canalized capillary vessels in a lymphohistiocytic and eosinophil rich environment. ALHE presents clinically as single or multiple pink-brown dome-shaped papules or nodules, most commonly on the ear and peri-auricular area, followed by the face, and scalp. ALHE involving the subungual unit is rare with only 5 previously reported cases and all involved the underlying bone. The authors describe a case of a painful subung

Exchange nailing has proven to be a reliable surgical technique for the management of aseptic femoral shaft nonunions. Similar to primary intramedullary nail fixation for femur fractures, exchange nailing for aseptic hypertrophic nonunions of the femur relies on successful navigation of the starting point and proper nail trajectory to minimize coronal and sagittal plane deformities. Compared with the supine position, the lateral decubitus position has the advantage of allowing gravity to displace the soft tissue around the piriformis start site to facilitate nail entry. In addition, the C-arm

Ingredients found in the nail cosmetic industry, including but not limited to methacrylate and acrylate monomers, formaldehyde, and toluene … e are absent. In cases where strengthening of the nail is the sole purpose, nail wraps or preformed nails can be applied for non-cyanoacrylate-sensitive individuals.

The elderly population is growing, lifespans are increasing, and a greater emphasis on geriatric care is being implemented in hospital systems. With a higher percentage of the population living longer, hair and nail diseases associated with the advanced stages of life are becoming more prevalent. Common hair diseases in the elderly include androgenetic alopecia, senile alopecia, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and erosive pustular dermatosis of the scalp. Nail diseases associated with advanced age include onychomycosis, brittle nails, onychocryptosis, onychoclavus, onychogryphosis, subungual hemat…

Koebner phenomenon is observed in a number of inflammatory skin diseases. Psoriasis is one of the most common skin diseases associated with Koebner phenomenon. Nail psoriasis may be developed independently from inflammatory arthritis and skin psoriasis. This study reports on the reconstruction of third web of a 30-year-old woman, which performed on her right, due to congenital syndactyly. Four months postoperatively, she developed nail dystrophy, onycholysis and onychorrhexis of the middle, ring and little fingernails. The clinical and histopathology findings were compatible with diagnosis of …

Onychophagia, defined as habitual nail biting, is a common disorder affecting 20-30% of the population and all age groups. It may lead to significant psychosocial problems, have a negative impact on quality of life, and cause complications involving both the nail unit and the oral cavity. The objective of this paper is to review the prevalence, etiology, history, physical examination, complications and management of nail biting. Since onychophagia is a challenging disorder to treat, a multi-disciplinary approach should be taken involving dermatologists, internists, pediatricians, psychiatrists

Longitudinal splitting of the nails can occur as a result of any growth arising in the nail matrix. We present a case of a 50-year-old woman who presented with an 18-month history of longitudinal splitting of the nail on her right little finger, along with pain in the proximal nail fold region, which was extremely tender to touch. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an intensely enhancing lesion, while colour Doppler imaging revealed hypervascularity within the mass. A provisional diagnosis of glomus tumour was considered. Histopathology demonstrated presence of a well-circumscribed tumour com…

Subungual osteochondroma is a relatively uncommon benign bone tumor affecting mostly children and young adults, and is a major source of pain and nail deformity. Treatment consists of marginal excision and meticulous wound closure. In this report, we present three cases of subungual osteochondroma arising from the dorsal aspect of distal phalanx of the great toe, which were managed by marginal excision with preservation of nail apparatus under digital block anesthesia with the use of a ring tourniquet. We emphasize on the use of ring tourniquet made by glove's finger and the technique of prese

A case of frontal fibrosing alopecia with nail involvement is presented. Nail involvement provides evidence for underlying lichen planus, and that the disease represents a rather generalized than localized process. Favorable response of the scalp condition to oral dutasteride points to an inflammatory reaction on the background of androgenetic alopecia.

Nail disorders are a common presenting complaint for both the primary care physician and the dermatologist. Nail diagnoses are broad in scope and include infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic conditions. Onychomycosis is an especially common nail condition, and treatment should always be preceded by appropriate fungal studies for confirmation of diagnosis. Inflammatory conditions of the nail unit can mimic onychomycosis, and a dermatologist can assist with diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Likewise, subungual tumors often require biopsy, and should be evaluated by a dermatologist who
