Young children in early-onset Alzheimer's disease families: research gaps and emerging service needs.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of transcutaneous perianal ultrasonography in evaluation of fistulas in ano and to assess its possible role as a first-line investigation, for follow-up, and as a possible substitute for magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: Transcutaneous perianal ultrasonography was performed in 30 patients with fistulas in ano with the use of a 3- to 6-MHz sector probe, a 7- to 11-MHz linear probe, and a 5- to 7-MHz endocavitary probe. Patients were followed clinically and at surgery to assess the accuracy of transcutaneous perianal ultrasonograp

What do we know about needs for help after suicide in different parts of the world? A phenomenological perspective.

BACKGROUND: "A person's death is not only an ending: it is also a beginning - for the survivors. Indeed, in the case of suicide, the largest public health problem is neither the prevention of suicide (...), nor the management of attempts (...), but the alleviation of the effects of stress in the survivor-victims of suicidal deaths, whose lives are forever changed and who, over a period of years, numbers in the millions ..." (Edwin S. Shneidman, 1973). AIMS: As there is no doubt that suicide postvention should be given a more prominent position on the agenda than is presently the case, this pa

Slivers of the journey: the use of photovoice and storytelling to examine female to male transsexuals' experience of health care access.

The purpose of this research project was to examine female to male transsexuals' (FTMs) experiences of accessing health care. This was accomplished by documenting and recording the experiences of five FTMs through the use of photography and interviews. It was hoped that such an inquiry would provide a starting point for future research about the health care needs of the transgender community, and document some of the health care needs of the FTM community that would lead to recommendations for policy changes and educating providers.

Striving for Structure and Stability in Cincinnati's Family Homeless Shelters: A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach.

Experiencing homelessness negatively impacts child health, development, and emotional-behavioral functioning, but there is limited knowledge regarding specific service priorities, as articulated by families themselves, to prevent or address these adverse sequelae. Thus, to elicit the service needs perspective of families in shelter and to translate these findings into real-world action, we undertook a community-based participatory research effort using Group-Level Assessment, a focus group methodology. An action-based participatory needs assessment called a Group-Level Assessment (GLA) was con…

Nursing assessment as an effective tool for the identification of delirium risk in older in-patients: A case-control study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the usefulness of comprehensive nursing assessment as a strategy for determining the risk of delirium in older in-patients from a model of care needs based on variables easily measured by nurses. BACKGROUND: There are many scales of assessment and prediction of risk of delirium, but they are little known and infrequently used by professionals. Recognition of delirium by doctors and nurses continues to be limited. DESIGN AND METHODS: A case-control study. A specific form of data collection was designed to include the risk factors for delirium commonly identifi

A study of interactivity in educational patient hypermedia.

This study explores the use of interactive graphics for patients about to undergo Ishiki Type I thyroplasty, a surgery for unilateral vocal cord palsy. Steps include exploration of previous studies, needs assessment, prototype creation, and formative evaluation. Research suggests that interactive graphics should include the opportunity for the patients to practice and engage in a relevant, realistic scenario. Needs assessment results suggest the need for further studies with interactive graphics using larger patient sample sizes.

In recent years, healthcare organizations and scholars, particularly in Western societies, have increasingly recognized the importance of th … palliative care from Thailand and Italy and introduce two conceptual models for spiritual care and needs assessment from the UK. The discussion will encourage the implementation of integrated models of spiritual needs assessment and care in adult end-of-life and palliative care settings (that address any life-limiting illness). Caregiver Needs Following Disclosure of Child Sexual Abuse.

Caregiver support is vital in improving outcomes for child sexual abuse victims; however, the disclosure can significantly affect caregivers, thus impacting their ability to meet their children's needs. To maximize the support from caregivers, their own needs following disclosure need to be met. This study investigated the impact of child sexual abuse disclosure and associated needs as identified by caregivers. Sixty needs assessment forms were collected from families who accessed a parenting support pilot program run in New Zealand. These forms were completed by nonoffending caregivers during…

Title V Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant Priority Needs and Linked Performance Measures: Current Patterns and Trends (2000-2015).

Objective As part of the Title V Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Services Block Grant, administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA's) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), states are required to conduct a comprehensive needs assessment identifying MCH priorities every 5 years. This analysis examined current patterns and trends in state MCH priorities and selected performance measures to identify changing needs and…

Unmet palliative care needs among patients with life-limiting illnesses.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Unmet palliative-care needs remain common despite the well documented and wider recognition of early and integrated palliative care. This review examines recent evidence on unmet palliative-care needs among adults with advanced, progressive or life-limiting illness, with particular attention to how these needs are conceptualised and addressed across life-limiting illnesses. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent work distinguishes the presence of a concern, access to services, and the sufficiency of the response in terms of unmet palliative-care needs. Patient-level studies continue to sh

Assessing Sexual Interest in Adolescents Who Have Sexually Offended.

Adolescents who have sexually offended have unique treatment needs. For mental health professionals to adequately address these unique needs, further research is necessary. To that end, we explored the assessment of sexual interest (which may play an integral role in understanding potential for sexual reoffending) in a sample of 103 male adolescents who have sexually offended. We compared results from a physiological assessment (MONARCH 21 penile plethysmography [PPG]) and an actuarial assessment (Screening Scale for Pedophilic Interest [SSPI]), plus data from an unobstrusive assessment (Affin

Identifying patient-centered support needs in aortic aneurysm care.

OBJECTIVES: Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) presents significant medical and psychosocial challenges. Despite advances in medical care and outcomes, little is known about the psychosocial and behavioral supportive care needs and priorities of individuals living with TAA. METHODS: Patients (N = 106) with a current or previous TAA completed a structured Needs Evaluation survey assessing perceived helpfulness, likelihood of attendance, and barriers across medical, psychological, behavioral, and exercise domains. Participants were categorized by treatment pathway (surgery vs. surveillance) and dis
