Trichofolliculoma: a rare variant of hair follicle hamartoma.

Trichofolliculoma is a rare hair follicle hamartoma, which is often regarded as a hair follicle tumor. Mostly, it presents as a papule or nodule, involving the skin of the face and scalp area. A central, dilated keratin plugged ostium with vellus hair(s) is often present. We report a 19-year-old woman with typical clinical and histopathological findings of trichofolliculoma.

[Large condylomatous lesions of the vulva and their malignant transformation].

For the period of 1987 till 2001 were examined 23 women with big condilomatous lesions of the vulva. There were examined the diagnostic and the therapeutical approach and in the last few years the type of HPV in some of these patients. Our aim was to study and reveal the potential for malignant transformation of the big condimatous lesions of the vulva. Different histological types squamous cell cancer of the vulva were found in 18 women (78.26%): condilomatous cancers--9, verucous--7 and basaloid types--2 vulvar cancer. HPV type 16 was found in 6 cases (4 condilomatous and 2 basaloid cancers)

Epidermal apoptosis: cell deletion by phagocytosis.

Apoptosis is a process found in many tissues by which devitalized cells are eliminated in an orderly manner. In skin, apoptosis occurs following sunburn, in Bowen's disease and in basal cell carcinoma. Scattered cells are observed in which the cytoplasm has become condensed and dyskeratotic. These dyskeratotic cells are phagocytized, either in toto or in fragments by surrounding keratinocytes. This process involves the condensation, fragmentation, phagocytosis and digestion of individually degenerated cells. The mass of a tissue is thus related to the balance between cell formation (mitosis) a

Fine needle aspiration biopsy of salivary gland lesions. A reappraisal of pitfalls and problems.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the diagnostic value of fine needle aspiration biopsy in individual lesions of the salivary glands. STUDY DESIGN: During a 16-year period (1979-1995), 841 salivary gland lesions were investigated by fine needle aspiration with cytologic examination. The lesions affected the parotid gland area in all cases except 85 and 19, respectively, in which the submandibular gland and oral cavity (more often the palate) were involved. RESULTS: Approximately 3% (25/841) of the aspirates were inadequate, and in 97% of cases they represented the result of samplings performed outside ou

Basosquamous Basal Cell Carcinoma with Bone Marrow Metastasis.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common cancer in Caucasians. It is slow growing and rarely metastasizes. If left untreated over time, invasive growth can occur. We present a patient case with a primary BCC located in the right sub-mammary area, with extensive metastases to the skeleton and bone marrow. Histopathological examination of the tumour showed BCC with a diverse growth pattern. There were no signs of local metastases. Surgery was successfully performed. Three months post-surgery the patient developed normocytic anaemia and elevated inflammation markers. [18F]FDG PET/CT showed e

Basaloid carcinoma of the pancreas.

A case of basaloid carcinoma of the pancreas in a 26-year-old woman is reported. The tumour was constituted by solid nests of relatively uniform neoplastic cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and scant cytoplasm, showing distinct peripheral palisading. There were necrotic areas and deposition of hyaline material, suggesting a basement membrane-like substance. Small foci of clear-cut squamous differentiation were present. Tumour cells were positive for cytokeratin 14 and P63 and negative for neuroendocrine and acinic cell markers. Ultrastructurally, the tumour was constituted by polygonal cells wi

Deep cerebral invasion by basal cell carcinoma of the scalp.

We report recurrent basal cell carcinoma of the scalp with deep cerebral invasion in an 82-year-old man. Plain films and CT showed extensive, full thickness, skull destruction at the vertex. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI revealed neoplastic invasion of the meninges and left cerebral hemisphere, down to the lateral ventricle. We postulate that tumour extended into the brain along perivascular spaces of transcerebral vessels. This hypothesis is supported by the cleft-like contrast enhancement on MRI.

Basal cell nevus syndrome and medulloblastoma: a case report.

The basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple nevoid basal-cell carcinomas of the skin, recurrent odontogenic keratocysts, skeletal anomalies, developmental malformations, and the predisposition to other neoplastic processes. Among the well known relationships of the syndrome with cancer is that of medulloblastoma. The first known case of BCNS with medulloblastoma in Puerto Rico is presented.

Clinicopathologic Features and Outcomes of Actinic Keratosis and Skin Cancer After Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) are at an increased risk of secondary skin neoplasms. However, detailed clinicopathological and therapeutic descriptions are limited. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, observational, single-center study including HSCT recipients. Patients with actinic keratosis or skin/mucosal malignancies were evaluated by expert dermatologists, with a histological review. Management followed standard protocols, and patients were stratified according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines. RESULTS: Of

Orbital exenteration for secondary orbital tumors: a series of seven cases.

BACKGROUND: Exenteration is indicated in patients with malignant neoplasms of orbital contents. It entails the removal of the eyeball together with its extraocular muscles and other soft tissues. Exenterations can be classified into (1) total, (2) subtotal, and (3) supertotal exenteration. Retrospectively study, we reviewed 7 patients that had received exenteration/subtotal exenteration with spontaneous granulation/myocutaneous flap implantation or eyelid-sparing exenteration with myocutaneous flap. Primary lesions, histopathological examination results, treatments, and recurrences are discuss

Periorbital basal cell carcinoma requiring ablative craniofacial surgery.

Four patients with recurrent, periorbital basal cell carcinoma and who ultimately required craniofacial composite orbitectomies are presented. Common clinical features included medial canthal and eyelid location of tumors, multiple previous surgical procedures, and morphealike clinical appearance of the tumor. Common histologic features included extensive, dense hyaline fibrosis and perineural invasion. Because of the extensive soft-tissue and osseous involvement, all patients required composite resection of the orbit, the ethmoidal sinus, the orbital contents, and the soft tissue of the eyeli
