Imaging Findings in Neurogenic Ptosis.

Neurogenic ptosis refers to upper eyelid drooping resulting from disrupted innervation of the eyelid retractor muscles. The differential dia … nding from the base of the skull to the upper chest. Several pathologic conditions can affect these neural pathways and cause neurogenic ptosis owing to the long course of the involved nerves. Therefore, neurogenic ptosis is usually associated with unique clinical features based on the anatomical location of the pathology. This pictorial essay provides a deeper u …

RIP140/PGC-1α axis involved in vitamin A-induced neural differentiation by increasing mitochondrial function.

Vitamin A deficiency and mitochondrial dysfunction are both associated with neural differentiation-related disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Down syndrome (DS). The mechanism of vitamin A-induced neural differentiation and the notion that vitamin A can regulate the morphology and function of mitochondria in its induction of neural differentiation through the RIP140/PGC-1α axis are unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles and underlying mechanisms of RIP140/PGC-1α axis in vitamin A-induced neural differentiation. Human neuroblastoma cells (SH-SY5Y) were used as

A bottom-up septal inhibitory circuit mediates anticipatory control of drinking.

Drinking behavior is not only homeostatically regulated but also rapidly adjusted before any changes in blood osmolality occur, known as anticipatory thirst satiation. Homeostatic and anticipatory signals converge in the subfornical organ (SFO); however, the neural pathways conveying peripheral information to the SFO before changes in blood composition are incompletely understood. Here we reveal an inhibitory pathway from the medial septum (MS) to the SFO that is involved in the control of anticipatory drinking behavior in mice. MS γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons encode water-satiation…

Combined graph convolutional networks with a multi-connection pattern to identify tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease and Essential tremor with resting tremor.

Essential tremor with resting tremor (rET) and tremor-dominant Parkinson's disease (tPD) share many similar clinical symptoms, leading to frequent misdiagnoses. Functional connectivity (FC) matrix analysis derived from resting-state functional MRI (Rs-fMRI) offers a promising approach for early diagnosis and for exploring FC network pathogenesis in rET and tPD. However, methods relying solely on a single connection pattern may overlook the complementary roles of different connectivity patterns, resulting in reduced diagnostic differentiation. Therefore, we propose a multi-pattern connection Gr

Causal relationship of CA3 back-projection to the dentate gyrus and its role in CA1 fast ripple generation.

BACKGROUND: Pathophysiological evidence from temporal lobe epilepsy models highlights the hippocampus as the most affected structure due to its high degree of neuroplasticity and control of the dynamics of limbic structures, which are necessary to encode information, conferring to it an intrinsic epileptogenicity. A loss in this control results in observable oscillatory perturbations called fast ripples, in epileptic rats those events are found in CA1, CA3, and the dentate gyrus (DG), which are the principal regions of the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus. The present work used Granger c

Posterior Orbitofrontal and Anterior Cingulate Pathways to the Amygdala Target Inhibitory and Excitatory Systems with Opposite Functions.

The bidirectional dialogue of the primate posterior orbitofrontal cortex (pOFC) with the amygdala is essential in cognitive-emotional functions. The pOFC also sends a uniquely one-way excitatory pathway to the amygdalar inhibitory intercalated masses (IM), which inhibit the medial part of the central amygdalar nucleus (CeM). Inhibition of IM has the opposite effect, allowing amygdalar activation of autonomic structures and emotional arousal. Using multiple labeling approaches to identify pathways and their postsynaptic sites in the amygdala in rhesus monkeys, we found that the anterior cingula

Why does brain damage impair memory? A connectionist model of object recognition memory in perirhinal cortex.

Object recognition is the canonical test of declarative memory, the type of memory putatively impaired after damage to the temporal lobes. Studies of object recognition memory have helped elucidate the anatomical structures involved in declarative memory, indicating a critical role for perirhinal cortex. We offer a mechanistic account of the effects of perirhinal cortex damage on object recognition memory, based on the assumption that perirhinal cortex stores representations of the conjunctions of visual features possessed by complex objects. Such representations are proposed to play an import

Hippocampus, cortex, and basal ganglia: insights from computational models of complementary learning systems.

We present a framework for understanding how the hippocampus, neocortex, and basal ganglia work together to support cognitive and behavioral function in the mammalian brain. This framework is based on computational tradeoffs that arise in neural network models, where achieving one type of learning function requires very different parameters from those necessary to achieve another form of learning. For example, we dissociate the hippocampus from cortex with respect to general levels of activity, learning rate, and level of overlap between activation patterns. Similarly, the frontal cortex and a

Neural cell adhesion molecule L1 is required for fasciculation and routing of thalamocortical fibres and corticothalamic fibres.

To examine the role of neural cell adhesion molecule L1 in thalamocortical projections, we analysed L1 deficient (L1-/y) mice. Immunohistochemistry of pleiotrophin/HB-GAM, a marker for thalamocortical axons and axonal tracing experiments showed that thalamocortical axons were abnormally and highly fasciculated when they pass through the developing internal capsule. Within the cortex, however, their course was more diffuse. The corticofugal fibres immunoreactive for TAG-1 were also more strongly fasciculated and their number was decreased in L1-/y mice. Furthermore, no TAG-1-positive corticofug

Intracortical inhibition of the motor cortex in movement disorders.

We have studied the function of inhibitory interneurons within the motor cortex in several movement disorders using a paired-pulse magnetic stimulation technique. Their function was disturbed in patients with dystonia or focal lesions of the basal ganglia. On the other hand, the inhibition was normal in patients with chorea or essential tremor. The inhibitory circuit in the motor cortex must be functionally involved in some movement disorders probably because of changes of the inputs from basal ganglia to motor cortices, but not involved in the others. This difference in the functional involve

Altered neural conduction with epidural bupivacaine.

The sites and magnitude of evoked potential response alterations induced by varying masses and concentrations of epidurally administered bupivacaine were assessed from electrodes positioned along the conducting pathways of the monkey. The mass of bupivacaine was the major factor in determining the level and degree of response alterations. At the lower levels of total drug mass, effects were limited to the dorsal root entry zone, whereas higher levels of mass not only increased the response attenuation at the gray matter level but resulted in additional changes in those responses recorded from

Electrophysiologic study demonstrating triple antegrade AV nodal pathways in patients with spontaneous and/or induced supraventricular tachycardia.

Ten patients are described with two discrete discontinuities in AV nodal conduction curves suggesting triple antegrade AV nodal pathways. This represents approximately 6% of patients seen in this laboratory with dual AV nodal pathways. Patients ranged in age from 18 to 63 (mean +/- SD, 48 +/- 15 years). Six of the 10 patients had organic heart disease and four did not. The effect of cycle length on triple pathways could be analyzed in 8 of 10 patients who had atrial extrastimulus testing at two or more cycle lengths. Three of these eight patients had triple pathways at all tested cycle lengths

[Blink reflex and jaw reflex in neurinoma of the acoustic and trigeminal nerves (author's transl)].

The blink reflex was studied in four patients with neurinoma of the acoustic nerve and in two patients with trigeminal neurinoma. It was abnormal in all cases except in one neurinoma of the acoustic nerve inside the canal. The jaw reflex, studied in four cases, showed unilateral impairment in two cases of trigeminal neurinoma and one case of acoustic neurinoma; it was normal in the case of acoustic neurinoma in the canal. The blink reflex and jaw reflex merit inclusion among the further tests conducted in cases of suspected neurinoma of the trigeminal or acoustic nerves. However, they are of l

Disconnection's renaissance takes shape: Formal incorporation in group-level lesion studies.

Group-level voxelwise statistical analyses of lesion-deficit relationships have been used to implicate brain structures critical for specific aspects of human cognition and behavior. Current approaches fail to account for the role of fiber tract disruptions in causing deficit, and confound cortical damage with damage to fibers of passage. Here, we develop a framework, Generalized Lesion-Symptom Mapping (GLSM), to integrate fiber tract information from DTI-based tractographic atlases in tractwise and voxelwise lesion-deficit analyses. First, we used the geniculo-calcarine system as a validation

Inhibition of motoneuron discharge by peripheral nerve stimulation: an F response analysis.

F waves were recorded from the abductor pollicis brevis stimulating the median nerve at the wrist. These data were compared to responses obtained after preceding supramaximal stimulation of digital fibers of the second (II) finger or the median nerve at the wrist. The time between conditioning and test stimuli were 50 msec. Following conditioning stimuli, F wave latencies were significantly increased while F amplitudes, durations, and persistences were all decreased. Chronodispersion was not significantly affected. These changes were associated with increased repetition of individual F respons

Callosal inhibition: the key to the brain code.

A mechanism for interhemispheric communication is proposed based upon the assumption of homotopic callosal inhibition. The implied pattern of cortical activity in each cerebral hemisphere is shown to be the mirror-image and "photographic negative" of the contralateral pattern. Mirror-imagery is a direct consequence of (1) approximate cerebral hemispheric bilateral symmetry and (2) homotopic callosal connections. The photographic negative relationship is a direct consequence of (1) bilaterally symmetrical activation of the cortex via subcortical "attentional" mechanisms and (2) inhibition by a

Brain stem reticular units: some properties of the course and origin of the ascending trajectory.

Experiments were conducted in acutely prepared cats anesthetized with halothane-nitrous oxide. Single units were recorded in the mesencephalic and rostral rhombencephalic reticular core, and their ascending axons were stimulated in the mesencephalon, diencephalon, and telencephalon. The locations of stimulation and recording sites were determined by histological examination of the brains. Antidromic spikes were elicited by electrodes with a stimulus spread of approximately 300 mum and were collided with spontaneous (orthodromic) spikes to confirm antidromicity. Projecting axons were found to b

Meis3 is required for neural crest invasion of the gut during zebrafish enteric nervous system development.

During development, vagal neural crest cells fated to contribute to the enteric nervous system migrate ventrally away from the neural tube toward and along the primitive gut. The molecular mechanisms that regulate their early migration en route to and entry into the gut remain elusive. Here we show that the transcription factor meis3 is expressed along vagal neural crest pathways. Meis3 loss of function results in a reduction in migration efficiency, cell number, and the mitotic activity of neural crest cells in the vicinity of the gut but has no effect on neural crest or gut specification. Anatomy of the Visual Pathways.

The optic pathway, or visual system, conveys sensory information from the retina in the globe to the visual cortex in the occipital lobe. The globe is the primary visual sensory organ responsible for gathering and focusing light and sending electrical and neural signals to the rest of the visual pathway. In the posterior globe, the retina detects incoming light from the environment and converts it into electrical and neural signals that travel along the optic nerve to be processed by the brain for visual perception. Disruptions in the optic pathway and associated clinical signs provide diagnos
