Air in Line: An Alarming Issue.

BACKGROUND: The infusion of air from IV tubing can adversely affect the vascular system and potentially result in a venous air embolism. Infusion pumps are designed to alarm when air in the IV line (AIL) reaches a set threshold and can result in disruptions in drug delivery and decreased nursing productivity. Depending on the method employed, removal of AIL can also pose a risk to healthcare workers and patients. OBJECTIVES: This article discusses how AIL occurs, methods used for manual removal, devices currently available to reduce the occurrence, and new technology that may eliminate AIL.

Just-in-Time DNP Book Club: An Inclusive Immersion Experience.

A just-in-time faculty-led virtual book club for a Doctor of Nursing Practice program was initiated in response to student interest. Students met virtually to discuss advanced practice nursing implications of a nonfiction book in accordance with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials. Reading a book independently may be insufficient for deep learning, but individual summary reflections following faculty-led discussions connected domains, competencies, and subcompetencies. This unplanned reactive activity connected a real-world situation to the principles of advanced nursing

A change in attitudes.

The British Thoracic Society has issued national quality standards for the diagnosis, treatment and management of the chronic lung disease bronchiectasis. Despite being the third most common lung disease in the UK, the condition is often overlooked by clinicians. The new standards should help more patients manage the condition at home.

Defining risk from the perspective of nurses in clinical roles.

Although the nursing literature suggests that nurses generally avoid risk, their willingness and ability to take risk are fundamental to their professional advancement, job satisfaction and patient advocacy. The definition of risk as it pertains in clinical practice, however, may not be synonymous with risk as defined in other fields. This study defines risk in nursing from the perspective of three registered nurses in clinical roles. Grounded theory methodology indicated that 11 risk categories comprised six core concepts. The latter formed the basis for the following: risk in clinical nursin

Immunization error in Primary Health Care: an expression of the precariousness of nursing work.

OBJECTIVES: to discuss immunization errors from the perspective of the nursing professionals' work process in order to minimize their occurrence. METHODS: this is a reflective study, grounded in concepts and constructs of nursing in public health. RESULTS: the vaccination room is considered a strategic space in nursing practice, requiring both technical and managerial skills from the nurse. Overwork and precarious working conditions are associated with lower engagement in safe practices. Error prevention demands a systemic approach that goes beyond individual accountability and considers the

Assembling packs: Outreach nurses, disaffiliated persons, and sorcerers.

Nurses working in outreach capacities frequently encounter disaffiliated or 'hard to reach' populations, such as those experiencing homelessness, those who use substances, and those with mental health concerns. Despite best efforts, nurses regularly fail to find meaningful engagement with these populations. Mobilizing the work of Deleuze and Guattari, this paper will critically examine conventional outreach nursing practices as rooted in the royal science of psychiatry, which many 'survivors' of psychiatric interventions reject. The field of Mad Studies offers an understanding of patient resis

Inspiring a culture of ownership through mutual accountability: A health care system's approach to connecting bedside expertise with boardroom strategy.

A health care system's approach to integrating the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses Healthy Work Environment (HWE) standards across organizational levels demonstrates a replicable pathway for aligning bedside expertise with boardroom strategy, an essential linkage in organizational strategic planning. Partnership between the nurse executive team and direct care nurses is critical to achieving nursing excellence. The HWE framework can be operationalized into the nursing strategic plan through nursing professional governance structures and performance improvement initiatives, promoti

Nurse decision-making when managing noradrenaline in the intensive care unit: A naturalistic observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Intensive care nurses care for critically ill patients in a complex, fast paced environment. Management of noradrenaline (norepinephrine) is core business for intensive care nurses and nurse decision-making on noradrenaline is poorly understood. The study objective was to investigate decision-making processes nurses use when caring for intensive care unit patients receiving noradrenaline. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: A qualitative exploratory design used the Cognitive Continuum Theory as a framework for naturalistic observations and interviews in two medical/surgical intensive care units

[Overhauling nursing education: clinical autonomy, leadership, and educational transformation].

The reform of nursing education marks a turning point for the profession by defining nursing practice around five areas of competence centered on clinical autonomy, reasoning, and nursing consultation. It establishes a curriculum based on real-world scenarios, integrating scientific knowledge, reflective practice, and evidence-based nursing to inform decision-making at the patient's bedside. At the heart of the new framework, nurses become clinical decision-makers and care pathway leaders, working in interprofessional collaboration, within the context of the healthcare system's strategic trans

Building innovative minds - The role of project planning course in enhancing nursing students' critical thinking, lifelong learning, and individual innovativeness skills: A quasi-experimental non-randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Equipping nursing students with 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, lifelong learning, and innovativeness is vital for safe and high-quality patient care. Although 21st-century competencies are increasingly emphasized as essential outcomes of nursing education, project planning courses remain insufficiently integrated into nursing curricula. Furthermore, there is a paucity of empirical evidence regarding its effects on individual innovativeness, critical thinking motivation, and lifelong learning among nursing students. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effect

The symbolism and myth surrounding nurses' uniform.

This article addresses nurses' uniform from the perspective of the symbolic, myth, legend and competing discourse. The analysis touches upon why nurses working with people who have learning disabilities discarded the nurses' uniform and why other nurses may consider doing so, particularly if suitable alternatives exist. The analysis draws from various areas of nursing practice, including the nursing of disabled people, elderly people and people with learning disabilities. Nurses' uniform is revealed as a totem of considerable potency such that to wear a uniform in just any setting or context h

Implementing an evidence-based detoxification protocol for alcoholism in a residential addictions treatment facility.

Chemical dependency, commonly known as substance abuse and use disorders, continues to plague residents of the United States. Because treatment has expanded beyond the walls of the acute care hospital, advanced practice nurses play a pivotal role in caring for clients addicted to various substances. This article describes how an advanced practice nurse in collaboration with the medical director and a director of nursing at a residential treatment center in southern New Jersey oversaw the development of an evidence-based detoxification treatment protocol for alcohol dependency, emphasizing the

Influencing factors of nursing discipline construction in a Chinese tertiary hospital: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: As a first-level discipline, nursing plays an increasingly important role in China's healthcare system, and its sustainable development has become a key focus of current nursing research. The existing research on nursing discipline development is mostly quantitative analysis and lacks depth, failing to fully explore the experiences of nursing managers in practice and the influencing factors. This study adopted a descriptive phenomenological qualitative research design to explore the obstacles and promoting factors in nursing discipline construction and used Herzberg's Two-Factor Th

A scoping review of rural mental health and substance use nursing.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, nearly 50% of the population live in rural areas, while just 36% of nurses serve in these locations. Rural nurses face distinct challenges such as limited resources and geographical isolation, and often work with an expanded scope of practice that includes mental health and substance use (MHSU) care. The extent to which rural nurses engage in MHSU care, care barriers, and facilitators has not been previously well described. Thus, this scoping review explored the international research on rural MHSU nursing. The aim was to synthesize the rural MHSU nursing evidence and c
