"The light after the storm": Psychosocial correlates of adversarial growth among nurses in Hong Kong amid the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

OBJECTIVE: Healthcare professionals are highly susceptible to adverse psychological outcomes amid the COVID-19 pandemic due to their job duties. As the largest part of the healthcare workforce, growing attention has been paid to nurses' adjustments to the pandemic. Despite the distress, recent studies found that nurses could still experience positive changes (i.e., adversarial growth, AG) during the pandemic. Research on the general populations has indicated that individuals' stress responses, coping resources, and coping strategies are associated with their AG during the pandemic. This study

A deductive thematic analysis of nurses with job-related problems who completed suicide during the early COVID-19 pandemic: A preliminary report.

BACKGROUND: Prior to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, nurses died by suicide more frequently than the general population. Antecedents prior to death include known job problems, such as disciplinary action; diversion of medications; inability to work due to chronic pain; and physical and mental illness. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore the suicide experience of nurses who died with known job-related problems during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic compared to what has been previously described. METHOD: Deductive reflexive thematic analysis was used to analyze narrat

Intensive care nurses' awareness of identification of early sepsis findings.

AIM: To determine intensive care nurses' awareness of identification of early sepsis findings. BACKGROUND: The incidence of sepsis is increasing in intensive care units, and if not identified early, it increases morbidity, mortality and cost of care. Intervention within one hour after the diagnosis of sepsis increases survival. Nurses' ability to identify early findings of sepsis affects the time of diagnosis of sepsis. DESIGN: The study used a cross-sectional design. METHODS: The sample of the study consisted of 544 nurses working in adult intensive care units of hospitals in Turkey. The s

Nurturing and nourishing: the nurses' role in nutritional care.

AIMS: Researchers collaborated with clinicians, consumers and dietitians to develop a policy defining how nurses could support their patients' nutritional care. BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of hospital malnutrition has been reported in Australia, Europe and the UK. A patient's nutritional status can deteriorate during admission. Malnutrition can increase complications, length of stay, mortality rates and health care costs. As the nursing role has become increasingly complex, traditional nurturing activities such as serving the patients' meals have devolved to other categories of staff leavin

Development of a Situation-Specific Theory for the Transition of Survivors of Stroke With Dysphagia.

The process by which stroke survivors move toward health while facing various difficulties can be construed as a "transition." Importantly, nurses need to understand and support this state of transition effectively. This study developed a situation-specific theory to explain post-stroke transition by integrating the findings of a qualitative study that explored the rehabilitation experiences of stroke survivors with dysphagia with a scoping review of qualitative studies using the theoretical framework of transition theory. This theory will help understand the transitions that stroke survivors

Creating an Innovative Global Health Clinical Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and international travel was halted, nursing faculty were challenged to transform the in-person global health clinical experience with travel to a new virtual format. The virtual experience would need to meet the learning objectives and provide a global health perspective. This article describes the process of transforming the in-person clinical experience to a virtual format to provide a rich global learning opportunity for the students without travel to the host country. Virtual global health experiences can successfully help students understand the health of p

Improving knowledge of continence care to prevent skin damage associated with incontinence.

Older people are at an increased risk of developing skin damage related to incontinence, including pressure ulceration and incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD). Factors exacerbating risk in older people include: a higher rate of faecal and urinary incontinence, reduced mobility, long-term conditions and changes to skin barrier function, as a result of the ageing process. Nurses have a key role to play in the assessment of continence, IAD prevention and management. This article explores nursing knowledge in relation to continence care on six inpatient wards for older people, and describes t

Clinical Localization of Stroke.

Acute stroke assessment is classically supported by clinical localization whereby presenting disabilities are associated with key arterial territories in the brain. Clinical localization skills are rarely taught to nonneurologists; yet, these skills are essential to the provision of evidence-based nursing care of stroke, enabling rapid patient identification, diagnosis, and ultimately, the delivery of acute treatment. This article explores the process of clinical localization in relation to the physiology affected by stroke vascular insufficiency. Elements of the neurologic examination are des

Daily struggles: living with long-term childhood technology dependence.

With advances in technology, children with chronic illnesses are surviving longer. This improved survival rate has resulted in a growing population of families caring for their children with complex needs at home. This grounded theory study explored how caring for a child who requires home ventilation affects family members. Families moved through a process of struggling daily as they cared for their child with complex needs. This ongoing struggle was characterized by three distinct dimensions: getting over the hump, starting to breathe, and having to deal with a subsequent event. Implications

A cognitive developmental approach to understanding how children cope with disasters.

TOPIC: This paper applies cognitive developmental theory to explain how preschoolers, school-age children, and adolescents process and respond to disasters. PURPOSE: To help clinicians understand the disaster experience from a child's point of view, recognize age-specific reactions, identify symptoms that may signal coping difficulties, and plan effective interventions. SOURCES: Case examples from the author's work with flood victims illustrate typical reactions for children (preschool to adolescents) within a family context, along with developmentally appropriate interventions. CONCLUSIONS

Barriers in Returning to Work for U.S. Nurses Following Substance Use-Related Discipline.

BACKGROUND: The United States is currently amidst a substance use epidemic, with overdose deaths rising significantly over the last decade. Substance use disorders are prevalent among nurses, mirroring general population rates, and pose significant risks to both personal and patient safety. Regulatory bodies impose monitoring and disciplinary actions on nurses identified with substance use disorder, which, while effective, present various barriers to return-to-work. METHODS: This study employed group concept mapping methodology to identify and prioritize barriers faced by nurses returning to

Effectiveness of a Learning Path in the Acquisition of Evidence-Based Practice Competencies by Nurses: A Protocol for a Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) positively impacts health safety and quality while also empowering nursing as a discipline. A useful strategy for promoting EBP is to build learning paths adapted to the individuality of nurses. These elements establish the framework for effective learning, determining the availability of specific content at certain times and influencing the design of learning objects to ensure optimal efficacy in the teaching-learning process. It is essential to identify effective strategies in evidence-based nursing education to advance EBP and thereby enh

Improving Diaper Performance for Extremely Low-Birth-Weight Infants.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low-birth-weight (ELBW) infants face significant diapering challenges compared with their full-term peers, due to immature musculature, nervous system, and skin development. Advances in medical care have increased an ELBW infant's rate of survival, which creates a growing need for diapers to better serve these infants. Aim of research. The objective of this study was to identify and confirm the requirements for optimal diaper performance from the neonatal intensive care unit nurses' perspective, as well as to assess in-hospital performance to determine if new features imp

A Correlational Examination of Person-Centered Care, Critical Reflection, and the Nursing Work Environment: Evidence From Iranian Teaching Hospitals.

AIM: This study aimed to determine the extent to which critical reflection competency (CRC) and a healthy work environment (HWE) predict person-centered care (PCC) among nurses in Iranian teaching hospitals. BACKGROUND: PCC is a fundamental model in healthcare, yet its implementation faces persistent challenges. Critical reflection and a supportive work environment are key factors that may influence care quality, but their simultaneous contribution to PCC dimensions remains underexplored. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted across four Iranian teaching hospitals with a sample o
