OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of splenectomy in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura who failed to respond to conservative management.
METHOD: Sixty-three patients were treated with splenectomy and followed up for 2 months to 16 years (average 4.7 years).
RESULT: The patients had symptoms of bleeding and their platelet count on average was 24 x 10(9)/L. The first, 3rd, 5th and 7th day after operation, the average platelet count was 110 x 10(9)/L, 202 x 10(9)/L, 251 x 10(9)/L and 246 x 10(9)/L. OBJECTIVE: To understand the relationship between the pathology of the olfactory epithelium in dysosmia induced by nasosinusitis and the prognosis.
METHODS: The olfactory epithelium of 23 patients who had chronic nasosinusitis and undergone endoscopic sinus surgery was histologically observed. All patients were diagnosed to have anosmia by olfactory tests before the operation. The history ranged from 5 to 30 years. Fifty were males and 8 females.

We report the first, as far as we know, Mexican case of meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii serotype B associated with AIDS in a female patient. The HIV was transmitted to the patient through a blood transfusion. This patient represents, worldwide, the ninth case of C. neoformans var. gattii in patients with AIDS.

The validity of the 'Portable Ergonomic Observation' method (PEO) was investigated against posture measurements based on continuous optoelectronic and video recordings made simultaneously with the observation. Two qualitative on-farm milk progesterone test kits were used for early pregnancy diagnosis in goats. One kit was based on latex agglutination (LA) and the other on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Infected aortic aneurysm is an uncommon, life-threatening disease. Early surgical treatment is crucial to survival. An early diagnosis could be made on CT in suspected cases, although CT features of infectious aortitis overlap with retroperitoneal fibrosis, hemorrhage, and lymphadenopathy. We report the case of an infected abdominal aortic aneurysm and describe the additional potentially useful CT finding of early infectious aortitis, which helps localize the abnormality to the aortic wall.

There have been many conflicting reports on the effects of paraffin paste on rubber nasal balloons used in the treatment of epistaxis. We set up a bench top experiment to observe the effects of paraffin paste (Vaseline) on three types of commonly used nasal balloons, namely Brighton balloons, Simpson balloons and Foley catheters whilst simulating their use in clinical practice. A series of 73 cases of chondroblastoma of bone, a rare benign tumor, was subjected to clinicopathological analysis, 50 cases of it were studied by immunohistochemistry and affinity histochemistry and 3 cases were observed by electron microscopy. The follow-up results of the movement of two components of hip prosthesis in 30 cases at different times after implantation of bipolar artificial femoral head were reported in this paper. It was demonstrated that the motion at both bearing surfaces in all cases was present 3 months-3 years after operation, and the motion range was not reduced with time. Therefore, the movement of bipolar artificial femoral head could be maintained within at least 3 years after implantation.

Over a 1.5-year postoperative period, surface precipitates were observed on hydrogel intraocular lenses (IOLs) by specular microscopy. In eyes with prolonged postoperative inflammation, a higher number of cells was observed. In these cases, the cells remained on the IOL surface for a longer period.
