Enhancing the efficiency of solution-processed polymer:colloidal nanocrystal hybrid photovoltaic cells using ethanedithiol treatment.

Advances in colloidal inorganic nanocrystal synthesis and processing have led to the demonstration of organic-inorganic hybrid photovoltaic (PV) cells using low-cost solution processes from blends of conjugated polymer and colloidal nanocrystals. However, the performance of such hybrid PV cells has been limited due to the lack of control at the complex interfaces between the organic and inorganic hybrid active materials. Here we show that the efficiency of hybrid PV devices can be significantly enhanced by engineering the polymer-nanocrystal interface with proper chemical treatment. Using two

Three-dimensional finite-element based deformable image registration for evaluation of pleural cavity irradiation during photodynamic therapy.

PURPOSE: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used after surgical resection to treat the microscopic disease for malignant pleural mesothelioma and to increase survival rates. As accurate light delivery is imperative to PDT efficacy, the deformation of the pleural volume during the surgery is studied on its impact on the delivered light fluence. In this study, a three-dimensional finite element-based (3D FEM) deformable image registration is proposed to directly match the volume of lung to the volume of pleural cavity obtained during PDT to have accurate representation of the light fluence accumulate

Toward the Development of a Wearable Optical Respiratory Sensor for Real-Time Use.

Respiration rate is an important vital sign that can provide insight into a patient's status and health progression. This information is used from critical care to sports and human performance evaluation. The current state of the art has demonstrated effectiveness in monitoring respiration rate with the use of wearable sensors. However, their form factor, which refers to the embodiment of approach, size, and shape, makes it difficult to implement within a longterm monitoring setting. Problems relating to form factor, such as compliance, are a major issue in collecting useful and actionable dat

Cloaking object on an optofluidic chip: its theory and demonstration.

Recently, the design of metamaterial guided by transformation optics (TO) has emerged as an effective method to hide objects from optical detection, based on arranging a bended light beam to detour. However, this TO-based solution involves fabrication of material with complicated distribution of permittivity and permeability, and the device falls short of tunability after fabrication. In this work, we propose an optofluidic model employing the method of streamline tracing-based transformation optofluidics (STTOF) to hydrodynamically reconfigure light propagation in a given flow field for objec

[The wave front and visual functions in the correction of different types of astigmatism with soft toric contact lenses in children and adolescents].

The study deals with the wave front in children and adolescents as a result of correction of astigmatism with soft toric contact lenses (STCL). Sixty-six patients (113 eyes) aged 5-16 years, who had different types of astigmatism and emmetropia, were examined. The level of optic aberrations was quantified on an OPD device (Nidek, Japan). The optic characteristics of the eye significantly improved due to the use of STCL in children and adolescents. At the same time, diminished summary aberrations improved not only visual acuity and spatial contrast sensitivity, but also ocular accommodation fun

Optic neuritis and recurrent myelitis in a woman with systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: A 38-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus presented with headaches and bilateral hearing loss. Brain MRI was initially suggestive of small-vessel disease developing in the context of neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus. Several months later, the patient developed optic neuritis, followed by recurrent attacks of myelitis. INVESTIGATIONS: MRI of the spine revealed multifocal regions of myelitis affecting the cervical spine. Serological evaluation revealed the presence of neuromyelitis optica-IgG antibodies. MRI of the brain was nondiagnostic for multiple sclero

Retrograde intubation: an alternative way for the management of difficult airway.

Inserting a retrograde wire into the pharynx through a cricothyroid puncture can facilitate tracheal intubation in difficult situations where either a flexible fiber-optic bronchoscope or an expert user of such a device is not available. Even in cases when fibropric can not be negotiated for the purpose, this method has been claimed to be useful to manage the airway. Some mouth opening is essential for the oral or nasal retrieval of the wire from the pharynx. Here, a case of post mandibular reconstructed wound infection required surgical debridement and plate removal from reconstructed lower m

Refractive errors in children.

Optical correction of refractive errors in infants and young children is indicated when the refractive errors are sufficiently large to cause unilateral or bilateral amblyopia, if they are impairing the child's ability to function normally, or if the child has accommodative strabismus. Screening for refractive errors is important and should be performed as part of the annual physical examination in all verbal children. Screening for significant refractive errors in preverbal children is more difficult; however, the red reflex test of Bruckner is useful for the detection of anisometropic refrac

The Effect of Hypotension on Cerebral Metabolism and Perfusion in Adults Undergoing Cardiopulmonary Bypass: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Current blood pressure management strategies cannot accommodate large interindividual variations in cerebral autoregulation, which may result in inadvertent cerebral ischemia. A novel optical neuromonitoring device was developed to explore the relationships between blood pressure and cerebral metabolism and hemodynamics during hypotension on cardiopulmonary bypass and the transition on bypass in cardiac surgery. METHODS: Forty-five elective adult patients were monitored by a hybrid optical device incorporating broadband near-infrared spectroscopy for monitoring changes in tissue o

QD laser eyewear as a visual field aid in a visual field defect model.

Visual field defects interfere with free actions and influence the quality of life of patients with retinitis pigmentosa; the prevalence of this disease is increasing in aging societies. Patients with progressive disease may require visual aids; however, no such devices are currently available. We utilized a retinal projection eyewear system, QD laser eyewear, which includes a projector inside the spectacle frame, to draw the image taken by a connected portable camera with a wide field lens. The images are projected onto the retina using a Maxwellian view optical system, which is not influence

Deep brain stimulation, personal identity and policy.

A range of implantable brain-interfacing devices (IBIDs) is currently in use and development for the treatment of movement disorders and disorders of mood, behaviour and thought. These include cochlear implants, deep brain stimulation (DBS), prosthetic limbs, and optogenetic interventions (the combined use of genetics and optics to control individual cells). While implantable non-brain devices, such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators, began receiving US Food and Drug Administration approval in 1980, the development of IBIDs is recent, with the approval of DBS for Parkinson's disease in

Chiral nonlinear polaritonics with van der Waals metasurfaces.

Chiral optical cavities are crucial for the development of nonequilibrium quantum materials by discriminating and selectively coupling to light of a specific circular polarization, but fundamentally cannot be realized with conventional mirror cavities. Here, we demonstrate this unique functionality by developing a monolithic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) metasurface with broken out-of-plane symmetry, allowing for the selective formation of self-hybridized chiral exciton-polaritons. Our metasurface maintains maximal chirality for oblique incidence up to 20°, thereby outperforming all p

Scalable compact on-chip multimode circulator with low loss and broad bandwidth.

High-performance multimode optical devices are critical for photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and mode-division multiplexing (MDM), but conventional fiber-based multimode circulators (MMC) lack compactness and most on-chip circulators only support single-mode operation, limiting on-chip multimode transmission. To address this, we propose and demonstrate a simplified, N-mode-scalable on-chip MMC. Incorporating two symmetric N-junctions and ⌊N/2⌋ tapered π-phase shifters, it supports off-chip multi-port and on-chip multi-mode circulation. The fabricated silicon waveguide 3-mode prototype with …

The measurement of Central Corneal Thickness.

We aimed to compare five different devices that measure Central Corneal Thickness. The Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) is an important parameter in ophthalmology. It is involved in the management of various eye conditions such as: glaucoma, keratoconus, contact lens wearing, corneal dystrophies, refractive surgery and keratoplasty. We measured the CCT using OCT, Topographer (TOPO), Ultrasonography Pachymeter (US), Specular Microscope (MS), and Non-contact Tonometer (TONO). In the analysis of the data collected from 59 patients we found the following mean values: US - 554.51 ± 29.849 μm, OCT -

Potential Biomedical Limitations of Graphene Nanomaterials.

Graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) possess mechanical stiffness, optical properties, and biocompatibility making them promising materials for biomedical applications. However, to realize the potential of graphene in biomedicine, it must overcome several challenges that arise when it enters the body's circulatory system. Current research focuses on the development of tumor-targeting devices using graphene, but GFNs accumulated in different tissues and cells through different pathways, which can cause toxic reactions leading to cell apoptosis and body dysfunction when the accumulated amount ex

[Early diagnosis of keratoconus].

Keratoconus is morphologically associated with increasing deformation, thinning and scarring of the cornea. This functionally leads to refractive changes and visual deterioration. In the early stages there are often no clear clinical signs in the slit-lamp examination; however, confirming the diagnosis as early as possible is important in order to provide patients with an appropriate treatment. For the early diagnosis of keratoconus, various diagnostic devices have been introduced in recent years and decades. These include keratometry with reflection-based or elevation-based systems and optica

A technology roadmap of smart biosensors from conventional glucose monitoring systems.

The objective of this review article is to focus on technology roadmap of smart biosensors from a conventional glucose monitoring system. The estimation of glucose with commercially available devices involves analysis of blood samples that are obtained by pricking finger or extracting blood from the forearm. Since pain and discomfort are associated with invasive methods, the non-invasive measurement techniques have been investigated. The non-invasive methods show advantages like non-exposure to sharp objects such as needles and syringes, due to which there is an increase in testing frequency,
