Visual function tests including the role of optical coherence tomography in neurofibromatosis 1.

Optic pathway glioma (OPG) is a common and significant complication of neurofibromatosis 1 (NF-1) that might lead to vision loss. The main reason to treat OPG is to preserve vision. Tumor location along the visual pathway largely dictates the presenting signs and symptoms. Clinical ophthalmic evaluation is focused on optic nerve functions including evaluation of pupils' reaction to light, visual acuity, color vision, and visual field, as well as optic nerve appearance. An important relatively new ancillary test is optic coherence tomography (OCT) that measures the volume of retinal nerve fiber

Confounder for Optic Disc Evaluation in Glaucoma.

Congenital disc anomalies like optic disc coloboma or optic disc pit are rare occurrences. Coloboma involving disc or optic disc coloboma occurs due to defective closure of choroidal fissure, which can be unilateral or bilateral. These anomalies are discovered on routine examination or referred to as an open-angle glaucoma suspect. These anomalies can be asymptomatic or may present with visual field defects. Here we report a case of both eyes angle closure glaucoma with incidental finding of unilateral coloboma involving disc in the left eye. Optical coherence tomography of the optic nerve hea

The histologic basis of optic disk pallor in experimental optic atrophy.

We studied the clinical and microscopic appearances of the optic nerve head in squirrel monkeys with optic nerve degeneration produced by optic nerve transection at the orbital apex. The ophthalmoscopic development of optic disk pallor coincided with the loss of nerve fiber bundles and the rearrangement of the remaining disk astrocytes into dense parallel layers across the nerve head. No astrocytic mitoses were observed and the estimated volume of astrocytes increased only slightly from normal. Among the astrocytes in atrophic disks, many capillaries had patent lumens and ultrastructurally nor

Wilbrand Knee Revisited.

BACKGROUND: Over a century ago, German ophthalmologist Hermann Wilbrand reported inferonasal crossing fibers within the chiasm curve anteriorly into the contralateral optic nerve. This anatomic bend, "Wilbrand knee," is classically cited as the explanation for the "junctional scotoma," a contralateral superotemporal visual field defect associated with lesions affecting the optic nerve at its junction with the chiasm. More recent reports have called into question the existence of Wilbrand knee or suggested that it may simply be an artifact. METHODS: Four human optic chiasms (obtained from cada

Peripheral Sensory Neurons Expressing Melanopsin Respond to Light.

The ability of light to cause pain is paradoxical. The retina detects light but is devoid of nociceptors while the trigeminal sensory ganglia (TG) contain nociceptors but not photoreceptors. Melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) are thought to mediate light-induced pain but recent evidence raises the possibility of an alternative light responsive pathway independent of the retina and optic nerve. Here, we show that melanopsin is expressed in both human and mouse TG neurons. In mice, they represent 3% of small TG neurons that are preferentially local

Nervus terminalis, olfactory nerve, and optic nerve representation of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone in primates.

The luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) system was examined immunocytochemically in olfactory bulbs of adult monkeys, including two New World species (squirrel monkey, Saimiri sciureus and owl monkey, Aotus trivirgatus) and one Old World species (cynomolgus macaque, Macaca fasciculata), and in the brain and nasal region of a fetal rhesus macaque Macaca mulatta. LHRH neurons and fibers were found sparsely distributed in the olfactory bulbs in all adult monkeys. There was more LHRH in the accessory olfactory bulb (which is absent in Old World monkeys). In the fetal macaque there was a r

Diagnosis of Asbestos-Related Diseases: The Mineralogist and Pathologist's Role in Medicolegal Field.

Because asbestos diseases represent a complex pattern of legal, social, and political issue, the involvement of the mineralogist and pathologist for a multidisciplinary assessment of its diagnosis helps investigate the relationship between mesothelioma or lung cancer and occupational or environmental asbestos exposure. In the present study, we consider the concentrations of asbestos bodies (ABs) detected by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the burden of different kinds of mineral fibers (among which is asbestos) identified by SEM combined with an energy dispers

Innervation and vasculature of human sweat glands: an immunohistochemistry-laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy study.

Secreting tubules, nerves fibers, and blood vessels in human sweat glands (SGs) were fluorescently stained by immunohistochemical and lectin methods for examination with a laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). Using these techniques, the three-dimensional distribution of up to three substances within a single specimen was investigated by collecting a series of optical sections for each of three fluorophores. Each SG received several nerve fibers. These branched into delicate bands of one or more axons that ran longitudinal to the sweat tubule then encircled the tubule. A heavy complement

Optic disc edema in raised intracranial pressure. I. Evolution and resolution.

Progressively growing intracranial space-taking lesions were simulated in 32 rhesus monkeys by balloons introduced into the subarachnoid space of the temporal region. Optic disc edema (ODE) first appeared at the lower pole, then the upper pole, then the nasal part, and last the temporal part of the disc; severity of edema generally followed sult, most severe at the lower pole (P less than .005). Fluorescein fundus angiography showed that swelling of the optic disc preceded the vascular changes associated with ODE. Raised intracranial pressure for 24 hours, or less, could cause ODE. The atrophi

Metabolic optic neuropathies.

Metabolic optic neuropathies form a rubric of disease characterized by bilaterally symmetrical visual impairment with loss of central visual acuity, dyschromatopsia, centrocecal visual field defects, temporal optic disc atrophy, and specific loss of the nerve fiber layer in the papillomacular bundle. The three subcategories of metabolic optic neuropathies are heredodegenerative (such as Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy), nutritional deficiencies (such as vitamins B12 or folic acid), or toxicities (such as ethambutol or cyanide). It's interesting to note that the first of these three is a co

[Optic neuromyelitis: a necrotizing disease of the central nervous system].

Optic neuromyelitis is characterized by simultaneous or successive necrotizing lesions involving the optic nerves and the spinal cord. We report two females with the disease, aged 30 and 34 years old. In the latter, a neuropathological study was done. Both patients had clinical, neuroradiological and pathological features that differed from those of primary demyelinating syndromes such as multiple sclerosis. These patients illustrate the selectivity of optic nerve and spinal cord lesions. The latter involve mainly pyramidal and Goll tracts while, within the necrotizing lesions of the optic chi

Maculopapillary Bundle Degeneration in Optic Neuropathies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Degeneration of the maculopapillary bundle (MPB) is a prominent feature in a spectrum of optic neuropathies. MPB-selective degeneration is seen in specific conditions, such as nutritional and toxic optic neuropathies, Leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON), and dominant optic atrophy (DOA). Despite their distinct etiologies and clinical presentations, which encompass variations in age of incidence and monocular or binocular onset, these disorders share a core molecular mechanism: compromised mitochondrial homeostasis. This disruption is characterized by dysfunctions in mit

The Characterization of Selected Mechanical and Optical Properties of Low-Density Japanese Papers.

Tensile testing has been a commonly used method forassessing the mechanical characteristics of paper for many years. In this study, seven types of low density, machine-made Japanese washi-papers were selected and used for a comprehensive comparative analysis investigating their properties. These low-density papers have not yet been studied intensively. The mechanical properties of each paper sample have been compared according to three different testing devices, and the morphology of fibers was analyzed employing optical microscopy. In this study, three different and unique instruments were us

[Prospects of the use of decompression surgery of the optic nerve in atrophy of vascular etiology].

The technique of decompression surgery on the optic nerve in vascular atrophy has been developed. Optic disk staining grew more intensive, visual field widened, and vision acuity improved after such surgery. Results of fluorescent angiography of the fundus oculi and ultrasonic dopplerography evidence an essential improvement of the blood stream in the central retinal artery after the operation. The positive effect of surgery persisted over the entire follow-up period (8 months). The authors consider that enlargement of the inner diameter of the posterior scleral ring permits a more loose dispo
