First insights into the molecular basis of pleomorphic adenomas of the salivary glands.

Pleomorphic adenoma, or mixed tumor of the salivary glands, is a benign tumor originating from the major and minor salivary glands. Eighty-five percent of these tumors are found in the parotid gland, 10% in the minor (sublingual) salivary glands, and 5% in the submandibular gland. It is the most common type of salivary gland tumor, accounting for almost 50% of all neoplasms in these organs. In fact, after the first observation of recurrent loss of chromosome 22 in meningioma, this was the second type of benign tumor for which non-random chromosomal changes were reported. The rate of malignant

[The clinical manifestations of histologically classified malignant lymphomas in the ENT area].

For an optimum therapy of malignant lymphomas in the ENT region an extensive analysis of the interrelations of exact histological classification, clinical manifestation and prognosis is desirable. We therefore classified, according to various criteria, 57 patients (34 male, 23 female) aged between 17 and 88, in whom the first diagnosis of a malignant lymphoma was established at our department between 1970 and April 1989. Histologically, in 52 cases (91%) this concerned a non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), in the other 5 cases Hodgkin's disease (HL). According to the "Kiel classification", 60% of the

[Clinical significance of analysis of immunoglobulin A levels in saliva].

SALIVA COLLECTION: Whole saliva is a product of secretion of 3 major glands (parotid, submandibular, sublingual) and many minor glands (labial, buccal, palatal). Unstimulated saliva is usually obtained as the patient spits out every 60 sec. or by forward bended head the patient allows saliva to drip off the lower lip into a cylinder. By collection of saliva in the tube the flow rate per unit time can be measured. When volume measurement is not required the saliva can be collected on cotton rolls, gauze or filter paper. For evaluating salivary gland function or when large volumes of saliva are

Innovative Surgical Management of the Synovial Chondromatosis of Temporo-Mandibular Joints: Highly Conservative Surgical Technique.

Synovial chondromatosis (SC) is an uncommon disease characterized by a benign nodular cartilaginous proliferation arising from the joint synovium, bursae, or tendon sheaths. Although the temporomandibular joint is rarely affected by neoplastic lesions, SC is the most common neoplastic lesion of this joint. The treatment of this disease consists in the extraoral surgery with a wide removal of the lesion; in this study, the authors described a more conservative intraoral surgical approach. Patient with SC of temporomandibular joint typically refer a limitation in the mouth opening, together with

Sebaceous adenocarcinomas of the major salivary glands: a clinicopathological analysis of 10 cases.

AIMS: Sebaceous carcinomas are uncommon malignant cutaneous tumours originating from the pilosebaceous unit. Although its occurrence is mostly common in peri-ocular glands, other anatomical regions of the head and neck may be affected, including major and minor salivary glands. METHODS AND RESULTS: We describe a series of sebaceous adenocarcinomas of the parotid and submandibular glands. The mean age was 62.1 (range = 31-90) years. Two patients (20%) presented regional or distant metastasis to mandible and lungs. All cases were positive for cytokeratins (AE1AE3 and CK-5), epithelial membrane

Regional atrophy, cellular plasticity, and regenerative potential in irradiated murine salivary glands.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiotherapy of head and neck cancer may cause detrimental late side effects such as fibrosis and hyposalivation. We investigated mouse salivary glands after fractionated irradiation, with the aim to elucidate cellular plasticity and potential regeneration. METHODS: 12-week-old female C57BL/6JRj mice were irradiated with X-rays to a total dose of 66 Gy, given in 10 fractions over 5 days. The radiation field covered the oral cavity and major salivary glands. The submandibular (SMG), sublingual (SLG), and parotid glands (PG) were dissected at day 100 after finishing irra

Sex, age, and body mass index influence on facial soft tissue thickness in a Thai population above middle age by ultrasonographic imaging.

Facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) includes the layers from the bone to the skin surface and is influenced by various factors. Ultrasound (US) serves as one modality for FSTT measurement. This study aimed to explore fundamental data regarding FSTT and examined the association of FSTT and sex, age, body mass index (BMI), and facial side. B-mode US was used to measure FSTT at 11 midline and 32 bilateral landmarks in 100 unembalmed cadavers within 120 h postmortem. The association of FSTT with sex, age, BMI, and facial side, were analyzed by descriptive and analytical statistics, with statistica

Anatomic and histological study of great auricular nerve and its clinical implication.

BACKGROUND: The great auricular nerve (GAN) is often sacrificed during parotidectomy, rhytidectomy, and platysma flap operation. Transection of the nerve results in a wooden numbness of preauricular region, pain, and neuroma. The aim of this study was to describe the branching patterns and distribution area of the GAN. METHODS: Twenty-five embalmed, adult hemifacial Korean cadavers (16 males, nine females; mean age 62.5 years) were used in this study. The branching of the GAN was determined through careful dissection. The histological structure of the GAN was also examined by harvesting and s

Carcinoma ex basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland: A report of an extremely rare case.

Malignant non-basaloid tumors that arise from basal cell adenoma (BCA) are extremely rare. The patient was a 72-year-old Japanese male, who had noticed swelling of the left parotid region 21 years ago. A superficial lobectomy was performed. About 60% of the tumor was made up of cribriform and trabecular tissue composed of basaloid cells, which exhibited mild atypia and nuclear expression of β-catenin. This portion of the tumor was considered to be a BCA. In the other part of the tumor, the proliferation of large eosinophilic atypical cells, most of which formed intraductal structures, was obse…
