Susceptibility to e-cigarette adoption among tobacco-naïve youths: a cross-sectional study in Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: The rise in e-cigarette use among youth is a significant global public health issue. It is important to identify those at increased risk and implement effective strategies to reduce e-cigarette popularity among the youth. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify predictors of e-cigarette uptake in youths with no prior tobacco use, considering individual, familial and the broader societal environmental factors. METHODS: For this investigation, a group of 2,487 tobacco-free youths was selected from 15 high schools in Shenzhen, China. Susceptibility to e-cigarettes was determined by a

Negotiating situational abstinence and moderation: a study of regular and heavy-drinking young Nigerians.

Studies that have examined young people's drinking behaviour, particularly how they abstain from alcohol or drink lightly and their motivations, have focused on Western contexts. Currently, studies on how and why young Africans abstain from alcohol or drink moderately are lacking. Therefore, there is a need to examine young people's drinking behaviours/practices on the continent to facilitate health promotion interventions. This study, which uses qualitative data elicited from 53 participants, explores how young Nigerian men and women who consume alcohol and drink heavily enact and negotiate a

A Paradox of School Social Organization: Positive School Climate, Friendship Network Density, and Adolescent Violence.

Schools are often encouraged to foster a positive climate to reduce adolescent violence, but evidence on the effectiveness of this approach varies significantly. This study investigates the roots of this variation by testing alternative hypotheses about how positive school-level climate and school-level student friendship network density interact to shape adolescent violence perpetration. Research on informal social control and network closure suggests that the violence-reducing association of positive school climate will be enhanced among schools where students are more densely tied through t

Subthalamic high-frequency deep brain stimulation reduces addiction-like alcohol use and the possible negative influence of a peer presence.

RATIONALE: The immediate social context significantly influences alcohol consumption in humans. Recent studies have revealed that peer presence could modulate drugs use in rats. The most efficient condition to reduce cocaine intake is the presence of a stranger peer, naive to drugs. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN), which was shown to have beneficial effects on addiction to cocaine or alcohol, also modulates the protective influence of peer's presence on cocaine use. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to: 1) explore how the presence of an alcohol-naive stranger peer aff

Substance Use Among Middle School Adolescents: Association with Family Members' and Peers' Substance Use and the Mediating Role of School and Mental Difficulties.

OBJECTIVE: We assessed the associations of substance (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, and other illicit drugs) use of adolescents with that of their family members (father, mother, step-parent, brothers/sisters, and grandparents) and peers, and the mediating role of school and mental difficulties (SMDs) which remained insufficiently addressed. METHODS: This cross-sectional population-based study included 1,559 middle-school adolescents in France (mean age = 13.5 ± 1.3, 778 boys, 781 girls). They completed a questionnaire including socioeconomic features (nationality, family structure and parents'

Establishing a model of peer support for pregnant persons with a substance use disorder as an innovative approach for engaging participants in the healthy brain and child development study.

The HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study, a multi-site prospective longitudinal cohort study, will examine human brain, cognitive, behavioral, social, and emotional development beginning prenatally and planned through early childhood. The goal is to recruit over 7000 caregiver-child dyads across the United States, with 25 % of the study population comprising children exposed in utero to substances to better understanding the effects of prenatal substance exposure on fetal and child development. However, barriers of mistrust for pregnant persons who are substance involved can create

A Hypothesis-Driven, Near-Peer Physical Diagnosis Module on Streptococcal Pharyngitis Within the Pediatrics Clerkship.

Premature infants are at greater risk of infections in part because of impaired functioning of external barriers, innate and adaptive systems. For similar immunological reasons, diminished responses to particular vaccines have also been reported. This study, utilising a prospective, pragmatic case series approach was designed to show non-inferiority of antibody response in premature infants to diphtheria, tetanus, Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate (Hib), meningococcal C conjugate (MenC) and pneumococcal conjugate (PnC) vaccines between immunization in a routine clinical situation rather

The Effect of Peer Support on Treatment Engagement for Opioid Use Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid misuse has been a growing problem in the United States that has escalated into a national public health emergency. Despite substance abuse programs that offer assistance in the treatment of opioid use disorder (OUD), keeping clients engaged in recovery treatment can be very challenging. Relapse prevention is a priority concern due to the higher risk of overdose following a period of sobriety. AIMS: This research compares two different approaches to treatment of OUD to assess relative treatment adherence. The purpose of this research is to establish whether a peer support-

Do stigma and level of social anxiety predict adolescents' help-seeking intentions for social anxiety disorder?

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents meeting diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder (SAD) do not seek help or access timely professional supports. The current study investigated two hypothesized barriers to adolescents' seeking help for SAD: stigma and SAD symptoms. METHOD: Three hundred fifteen adolescents (52% female; mean age = 14.85 years) read a vignette describing a hypothetical peer with symptoms of SAD and completed measures of their own help-seeking intentions, SAD symptoms, stigma awareness and agreement. RESULTS: The majority of adolescents reported that the vignette character ne

Gender-sensitive school environment and bullying victimization among adolescent girls: A multilevel study in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Bullying is an understudied global social problem. While school-level factors are a recognized influence on bullying victimization, the elements of a 'girl-friendly' school that may reduce the risk of bullying victimization among girls and prevent dropout is understudied in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study used baseline data from the evaluation of the Room-to-Read (RtR) Girls' Education Program (GEP) in Nepal to assess the relationship of a conceptually grounded gender-equitable school (GES) index with girls' risk of direct and relational bullying victimizatio

It helps to talk: A guiding framework (TRUST) for peer support in delivering mental health care for adolescents living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents living with HIV have poor treatment outcomes, including lower rates of viral suppression, than other age groups. Emerging evidence suggests a connection between improved mental health and increased adherence. Strengthening the focus on mental health could support increased rates of viral suppression. In sub-Saharan Africa clinical services for mental health care are extremely limited. Additional mechanisms are required to address the unmet mental health needs of this group. We consider the role that community-based peer supporters, a cadre operating at scale with adol

The impact of peer attachment on prosocial behavior, emotional difficulties and conduct problems in adolescence: The mediating role of empathy.

Attachment theories postulate that during adolescence, peer relationships become more important as a predictor of positive social, emotional and behavioral outcomes. Adolescents develop the ability to empathize with others, which is related to healthy functioning and positive peer relationships. Empathy has been studied as a potential mechanism that may help to explain how strong and healthy emotional bonds are associated with less emotional disorders and conduct problems in youth. The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between peer attachment and strengths and difficul

Emotional Maltreatment and Adolescent Depression: Mediating Mechanisms and Demographic Considerations in a Child Welfare Sample.

Emotional maltreatment is a risk factor for adolescent depression. Yet, it remains unclear whether commissions and omissions of emotional maltreatment (a) confer vulnerability via distinct mechanisms and (b) demonstrate similar risk across adolescent subpopulations. The present, multiwave study examined whether school engagement and peer relationships explain the depressive effects of distinct emotional maltreatment subtypes in an at-risk child welfare sample (N = 657; ages 11-14, AgeMean  = 12.49). The findings indicated that commission subtypes of emotional maltreatment predicted increasing

Predictors of Adolescents' First Episode of Homelessness Following Substance Use Treatment.

PURPOSE: A growing body of research has identified correlates (i.e., predictors) of youth homelessness. However, such risk and protective factors have not been identified for youth receiving substance use treatment. Using characteristics collected at treatment intake, the present study sought to identify predictors of youths' first episode of homelessness during the 12 months after substance use treatment entry. METHODS: Data come from a longitudinal study of adolescents (n = 17,911; aged 12-17 years) receiving substance use treatment throughout the U.S. Participants completed surveys at inta

School Cohesion Perception Discrepancy and Student Delinquency.

Research suggests that positive school environments contribute to lower levels of school disorder. Studies have also documented stark differences between how students and personnel perceive their schools. The current study examines such "perception discrepancies" as a meaningful dimension of the school environment, investigating the hypothesis that when students perceive their schools as less cohesive than their teachers, they are more likely to engage in delinquent conduct. The University of Missouri-St. Louis Comprehensive School Safety Initiative (UMSL CSSI) study allows comparisons between

Reactions of Boys and Girls to Sexual Abuse and to Sexual Encounters with Peers.

To understand the etiology and consequences of child sexual abuse it is important to study the victims' subjective reactions to such incidents. Because researchers have not been able to survey children about sexual abuse, not much is known about how subjective reactions are related to gender, age, age difference, and the social relationship between the offender and victim. The present study fills this gap using data gathered from a large, nationally representative sample of Finnish children ages 11 to 17 (N = 32,145). Analyses of abuse are based on a sample of 1520 children (78% girls), while

Sexual violence and safety: the narratives of transwomen in online forums.

An online forum analysis was conducted to explore experiences of sexual violence and safety among transwomen, with a particular focus on transwomen of colour. Four online forums were chosen for the analysis. Three key themes were identified: dating and violence in intimate relationships; fear of violence and safety strategies; and coping after sexual assault. Forum posters faced heightened gender policing and scrutiny, due to not conforming to normative ideals of femininity. Femininity was also predicated on white, middle-class status, and associated with domesticity and romance. As a result,

Marfan syndrome in adolescence: adolescents' perspectives on (physical) functioning, disability, contextual factors and support needs.

Although essential for providing optimal adolescent patient support, knowledge of the impact of Marfan syndrome in adolescence is limited. To explore adolescents' perceived impact of Marfan syndrome on (physical) functioning (activities, participation), disability (limitations, restrictions), contextual factors and support needs, we interviewed 19 adolescents with Marfan syndrome. Audio-recordings were transcribed, coded and analysed using thematic analysis. Identified themes were "difficulties in keeping up with peers" and "being and feeling different from peers". Furthermore, an adolescent M

Pluralistic Ignorance of Physical Attractiveness in the Gay Male Community.

Researchers have found that a disproportionate percentage of men diagnosed with eating disorders identify as gay, and there is extensive evidence that gay men have significantly more body image concerns than heterosexual men (Bosley, 2011). The current studies investigated whether pluralistic ignorance exists about what is considered attractive in the gay community. It was hypothesized that gay males would privately reject the notion that only a mesomorphic (thin and muscular) body type is attractive, yet incorrectly assume that their peers are attracted primarily to a mesomorphic body type.
