Barriers and facilitators of transition of adolescents living with HIV into adult care in under-resourced settings of Southern Ethiopia: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is commonly perceived as a distinct and typically healthy stage of life. However, in regions with a high prevalence of HIV, like Ethiopia, numerous adolescents are contracting the virus. Upon testing and diagnosis, they encounter care-related issues, particularly barriers and facilitators of the healthcare transition from adolescent to adult clinics. Hence, the study aimed to investigate the barriers and facilitators influencing the transition of adolescents living with HIV (ALWHs) in the resource-limited settings of Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: The research employed a

Motor ability and weight status are determinants of out-of-school activity participation for children with developmental coordination disorder.

According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health model endorsed by the World Health Organization, participation in everyday activities is integral to normal child development. However, little is known about the influence of motor ability and weight status on physical activity participation in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). This study aimed to (1) compare motor performance, weight status and pattern of out-of-school activity participation between children with DCD and those without; and (2) identify whether motor ability and weight st

Experiences with cigarette smoking among veterans with serious mental illness: A rapid qualitative evaluation.

Tobacco use is prevalent among military veterans. Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI) smoke cigarettes at higher rates than their counterparts, which causes major health disparities. Additional efforts are needed to support smoking cessation in this population. This study was informed by the theory of planned behavior and used a rapid qualitative matrix approach to explore how attitudes, perceived behavioral control, and social norms influenced smoking among veterans with SMI to inform tailored treatment. In a sample of 20 veterans, smoking initiation was often linked to military cultur

Socio-ecological domains and adolescent mental health: An application of the dual-factor model.

Comprehensive assessment of mental health includes wellbeing and psychopathology. Using the dual-factor model of mental health, this study explored associations between socioecological domains and mental health profiles and subsequent moderations by sex, race and ethnicity, and age. Cross-sectional data were from the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) Cohort (N = 2826). Adolescents were 11-17 years old (mean age 14.4 ± 2.1), 55.3% non-Hispanic White, and 48% girls. Using latent profile analysis, four mental health groups were identified: positive mental health; parent-end

A harsher reality for adolescents with depression on social media.

Social media use is often highlighted as an important cause of the recent rise in depression among adolescents. However, this perspective overlooks a crucial reverse causality, namely that levels of depression might also shape adolescents' social media use. In a diary study among 479 adolescents (Mage = 15.98; 16.9% clinically depressed), we assessed their level of depression and then monitored their social media activities and experiences daily for 100 subsequent days. Depressed adolescents did not differ from their non-depressed peers in the frequency of posting and the time spent scrolling.

Adapting TikTok and behavioral economics for youth-centered HIV prevention and PrEP education in the Philippines.

Social media platforms such as TikTok offer new opportunities for youth-centered HIV prevention and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education. Prior evidence shows that young people respond best to short, authentic, and gain-framed messaging. This study aims to contextualize these findings within the Philippine setting and propose strategies that align with youth behavior, local policies, and national health priorities. Relevant literature on behavioral economics, HIV prevention, and digital engagement among Filipino youth and cis-MSM was reviewed and interpreted alongside existing education p

Evaluation of condyle-fossa relationships in skeletal Class I malocclusion with variable degrees of deep overbite and open bite.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) position and shape between skeletal Class I subjects with different degrees of deep overbite or open bite and unaffected peers. METHODS: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 90 participants, equally divided into deep bite, open bite, and control groups (DBG, OBG, and CG, respectively), were analyzed. The DBG and OBG were further subdivided into three subgroups based on the severity. Linear and angular measurements were used to determine the positional and morphological characteristics of the TMJ. RESULTS: DBG showed significan

Amiodarone and thyroid physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management.

Although amiodarone is considered the most effective antiarrhythmic agent, its use is limited by a wide variety of potential toxicities. The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive "bench to bedside" overview of the ways amiodarone influences thyroid function. We performed a systematic search of MEDLINE to identify peer-reviewed clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, and other clinically relevant studies. The search was limited to English-language reports published between 1950 and 2017. Amiodarone was searched using the terms adverse effects, hypothyroidism

Association study of monoamine oxidase-A gene promoter polymorphism (MAOA-uVNTR) with self-reported anxiety and other psychopathological symptoms in a community sample of early adolescents.

The polymorphism upstream of the gene for monoamine oxidase A (MAOA-uVNTR) is reported to be an important enzyme involved in human physiology and behavior. With a sample of 228 early-adolescents from a community sample (143 girls) and adjusting for environmental variables, we examined the influence of MAOA-uVNTR alleles on the scores obtained in the Screen for Childhood Anxiety and Related Emotional Disorders and in the Child Symptom Inventory-4. Our results showed that girls with the high-activity MAOA allele had higher scores for generalized and total anxiety than their low-activity peers, w

Altar-Bound? The Effect of Disability on the Hazard of Entry into a First Marriage.

Researchers consistently find that the experience of disability in childhood can influence future life trajectories, particularly with regard to economic and educational outcomes. However, relatively little research has been conducted to explore the effect of disability on other dimensions of the transition to adulthood: namely, its effect on family-formation outcomes. This study uses data from waves I and IV of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health in order to assess the effect of various types of disabilities on the likelihood and timing of entry into a first marriage. Both bi

Adjustment problems in the family and school contexts, attitude towards authority, and violent behavior at school in adolescence.

This study analyzed the role of different but interrelated variables in the family and school contexts in relation to problems of violent behavior at school during adolescence. Participants were 1,068 students aged 11 to 16 (47% male) drawn from secondary schools in the Valencian Community (Spain). Statistical analyses were carried out using structural equation modeling. The model accounted for 32% of the variance in school violence. Results showed a direct association between quality of communication with father and teacher's expectations of the student with the adolescent's involvement in vi

Dual diagnosis: developmental disability complicated by mental illness.

When mental retardation is complicated by mental illness, the clinical result is "dual diagnosis." Though recognized as such only since the 1970s, these patients have long been the subset of the developmentally disabled most resistant to integration into the community. The maladaptive behavior or mental illness often prevents training for the retardation or other developmental disability. Because these patients are no longer placed in the back wards of state institutions, the modern expectation is that even this most difficult group can be influenced by positive behavior support directed by a

Post-secondary student adoption of mental health labels through their use of social media: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Social media is a significant source of information for post-secondary students, who are usually at the age at which many common mental disorders first express themselves. Social media can have a role in the way post-secondary students identify and act on mental health issues. OBJECTIVES: Explore how the use of social media influences post-secondary students' adoption of mental health labels. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We included empirical studies on mental health labelling in the context of social media use among post-secondary students published in English between January 1995 and

"Not enough" vs. "never perfect": a qualitative analysis of penile enlargement surgery intentions in heterosexual and homosexual men.

BACKGROUND: Psychological motivations for penile enlargement surgery (PES) remain understudied, particularly across different sexual orientations. AIM: This study explores the psychosocial drivers of PES intentions among heterosexual and homosexual cisgender men. METHODS: Twenty-four cisgender men (12 heterosexual, 12 homosexual) who had undergone or recently consulted for PES were interviewed using semi-structured protocols. Data were analyzed via thematic analysis, guided by the Push-Pull Theoretical Model. Push factors refer to internal pressures that motivate individuals to seek PES, whi

Manifestations of HIV stigma and their impact on retention in care for people transitioning from prisons to communities.

BACKGROUND: While most people living with HIV who are incarcerated in United States receive appropriate HIV care while they are in prison, interruptions in antiretroviral therapy and virologic failure are extremely common after they are released. The purpose of this study was to describe whether and how HIV stigma influences continuity of care for people living with HIV while they transition from prison to community settings. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured, telephone-based interviews with 32 adults who received HIV care while residing in a Wisconsin state prison, followed by a second i
