BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) are a leading cause of maternal and fetal death, especially in a resource-constrained setting. There is no study from Liberia on the disorder. This pilot study aimed to determine the burden, sub-types, and maternal-fetal outcomes of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy at the John F. Kennedy Maternity Center (JFKMC), Liberia.
METHODS: From January 1 to December 31, 2020, the medical records of 130 pregnant and post-partum patients admitted with Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy (HDP) in a census method of sampling were retrieved, while 83

Background In a recent multicenter study of perinatal outcome in fetuses with Ebstein anomaly or tricuspid valve dysplasia, we found that one third of live-born patients died before hospital discharge. We sought to further describe postnatal management strategies and to define risk factors for neonatal mortality and circulatory outcome at discharge. Methods and Results This 23-center, retrospective study from 2005 to 2011 included 243 fetuses with Ebstein anomaly or tricuspid valve dysplasia. Among live-born patients, clinical and echocardiographic factors were evaluated for association with n

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to examine the effect of small or large for gestational age (SGA/LGA) status on mortality and morbidity by gestational age.
STUDY DESIGN: Logistic binomial regression was used to calculate relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals for infant mortality and preterm morbidities for SGA or LGA compared with appropriately grown (AGA) deliveries stratified by gestational age group.
RESULTS: Compared with AGA infants of similar gestational age, SGA infants were at increased risk for infant mortality. Mortality risk was decreased for LGA infants born

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura commonly affects women of childbearing age and is associated with maternal and fetal complications. Management of a pregnant patient is difficult and requires combined care of obstetrician and a neonatologist. We report our experience of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura during pregnancy during the last 7 years.
METHOD: A retrospective study over the 7-year period 1997-2003 was carried out in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India. The course of pregnancy,

Background Eclampsia is a critical obstetric emergency associated with significant maternal and fetal mortality and morbidity. This retrospe … evealed that primigravida patients constituted the majority, reinforcing their higher risk profile. Perinatal mortality was raised in individuals with systolic blood pressure (BP) of ≥160mm Hg, diastolic of ≥110mm Hg, newborns of birth weight less than 2 kg, and urine albumin levels exceeding 2+. Perinatal mortality was comparatively low when provided within six hour …

BACKGROUND: Maternity populations are becoming increasingly multiethnic. Conflicting findings exist regarding the risk of adverse perinatal … risk for stillbirth, preterm delivery, or low Apgar score. The association between SGA and LGA and perinatal mortality varied markedly by growth chart and country of birth. Notably, SGA infants from African-born mothers had a relative risk of perinatal mortality of 6.1 (95% CI 4.3, 6.7) and 17.3 (95% CI 12.0, 25.0) by the descriptive and prescriptive charts, respect …

Massachusetts birth and death certificate tapes for the years 1970-1980 were linked and analyzed to determine causes of death in the neonatal and postneonatal periods and to identify any related sociodemographic factors. Our analysis suggests that, although the neonatal mortality rate declined by about 43 percent, the postneonatal mortality rate remained relatively unchanged. Perinatal problems remained the principal cause of death during the neonatal period, throughout the decade. In the postneonatal period, congenital malformations became a leading cause of death toward the end of the decade

Understanding key healthcare system challenges experienced by women during pregnancy and birth is crucial to scale up available interventions and reduce perinatal mortality. A community perspective about preferences and experience of care during this period can be used to improve community-based programs to reduce perinatal mortality. Using a qualitative exploratory approach, we examined women's experience of perinatal loss, aiming to understand the main factors, as perceived and experienced by women, leading to perinatal loss. Qualitative in-depth Interviews were conducted with 25 mothers wit…

Background The use of extracorporeal life support (ECLS) has expanded to include unique populations such as peripartum women. This systematic review aims to (1) quantify the number of cases and indications for ECLS in women during the peripartum period reported in the literature and (2) report maternal and fetal complications and outcomes associated with peripartum ECLS. Methods and Results This review was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018108142). MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL were searched for case reports, case series, and studies reporting cases of ECLS during the peripartum period that report

OBJECTIVE: To compare perinatal outcomes of suspected versus non-suspected small-for-gestational age fetuses (SGA) at term.
METHODS: Retros … tion and elective cesarean section were also significantly higher in the suspected SGA group. Total perinatal mortality was 2.1%. Identification of SGA and subsequent management led to a significant decrease of adverse neonatal outcome at birth, but did not lead to a significant decrease in NMCU admission ≥ 7 days.
CONCLUSIONS: Suspicion of SGA was associated with a …

Mortality trends among Indigenous peoples in Brazil remain poorly characterised. An ecological time-series study (2010-2022) was conducted, comparing Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations using nationwide open-access demographic and mortality data. Mortality was stratified by sex, age, and ICD-10 groups, populations were compared using Pearson's chi-square test (p < 0.05), and trends were evaluated with joinpoint regression (JR) to estimate Average Annual Percentage Changes (AAPCs). Between 2010 and 2022, mortality among Indigenous peoples increased by 82.5% (from 2,927 to 5,343), compared

Multiple gestation carries a significant risk of perinatal complications and mortality. Often twin neonates are delivered small and early with a perinatal mortality rate five to seven times that of singleton neonates. Increased morbidity and mortality is due to an increased incidence of antepartum complications, monozygotic pathology, preterm labor, and uteroplacental insufficiency. The key to management is early diagnosis, risk assessment, serial ultrasonography for fetal growth, and antepartum testing from 28 weeks until delivery. Prophylactic cerclage or tocolysis have not proven valuable. …
