BACKGROUND: Maternal complications including psychological and mental health problems and neonatal morbidity have been commonly observed in the postpartum period. Home visits by health professionals or lay supporters in the weeks following the birth may prevent health problems from becoming chronic with long-term effects on women, their babies, and their families.
OBJECTIVES: To assess outcomes for women and babies of different home-visiting schedules during the early postpartum period. The review focuses on the frequency of home visits, the duration (when visits ended) and intensity, and on

During routine evaluation for lactation failure, hyperthyroidism was discovered in a postpartum woman. Although postpartum thyroiditis and Hashimoto's disease are relatively more common than Graves' disease during the postnatal period, this young woman was found to have new-onset Graves' disease. Distinguishing between normal postpartum symptoms and thyroid disorders can be challenging. Utilizing history, physical examination, and laboratory testing, the provider can identify the etiology of hyperthyroidism during the postpartum period. Treatment options differ depending on the cause of the th

Periodic limb movements (PLM) during sleep are believed to be under the control of the sympathetic nervous system and may cause interrupted sleep and daytime sleepiness. The present case highlights the close relationship between PLM and significant heart rate changes independent of the presence of arousals. Thus, in addition to the already known deleterious effect on sleep continuity, moderate-severe PLM may also affect cardiovascular health.

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is a rare complication of hyperthyroidism that most often affects young East Asian males but increasingly also in other ethnic groups. The typical presentation is acute attacks varying from mild weakness to total paralysis starting at night or in the early morning a few hours after a heavy meal, alcohol abuse or strenuous exercise with complete recovery within 72 h. Signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism may not be obvious. The hallmark is hypokalemia from increased cellular sodium/potassium-ATPase pump activity with transport of potassium from the extracellu

We report a rare case of a 38-year-old female who presented with sudden onset flaccid quadriplegia and respiratory arrest with no significant past clinical history. She was later found to have hypokalemia due to distal renal tubular acidosis and further diagnosed as case of Sjogrens Syndrome.

Parenteral therapy of viral infections of the newborn and infant began with vidarabine (adenine arabinoside) for the treatment of neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections in the early 1980s. Acyclovir has become the treatment of choice for neonatal HSV infections and a variety of other herpesvirus infections. Ganciclovir is beneficial for the treatment of congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections involving the central nervous system (CNS). This article reviews the use of acyclovir and ganciclovir in the treatment of neonatal HSV and congenital CMV infections. A brief summary precedes a

The term "abnormal oral behavior" is now frequently used for very different entities. In esophageal atresia, oral behavior can be altered by esophageal dysfunction, but many other mechanisms can be involved. In this respect, the main goal is to prevent these abnormal oral behaviors: how can the early consequences of treatment of esophageal atresia on oral behavior be minimized? How can hospital care be improved? Our goal is to restore to the mouth its fundamental role of giving pleasure despite intrusive treatments, to set up early multidisciplinary preventive actions around orality, and to or

INTRODUCTION: Hanging usually ends in death, and about 80% of victims are found dead at the scene of the hanging. However, sometimes the hanging victims overlive for some time, and sometimes even survive the hanging.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to determine the causes of death in near-hanging cases, in people who have been outliving hanging for some time, to explain the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to death, and to identify prognostic factors for this outcome.
METHODS: Retrospective autopsy study was performed for a twelve-year period. There were only seven cases of near hanging. The samp

A male newborn was apparently well until his second day of life, when increased irritability and a swelling in his right leg were noted. He was rooming-in with his mother since birth. On examination, a mass on the anterior surface of the right leg was noticed. The mass was firm, elongated, ill-defined, unmovable and painful at palpation. No overlying skin changes were seen. The newborn had a family history of neonatal bone swelling with resolution before the age of 2. Subsequent images showed hyperostosis in the diaphysis of the right tibia. After exclusion of other conditions such as trauma,

The intestinal mucosa faces the challenge of regulating the balance between immune tolerance towards commensal bacteria, environmental stimuli and food antigens on the one hand, and induction of efficient immune responses against invading pathogens on the other hand. This regulatory task is of critical importance to prevent inappropriate immune activation that may otherwise lead to chronic inflammation, tissue disruption and organ dysfunction. The most striking example for the efficacy of the adaptive nature of the intestinal mucosa is birth. Whereas the body surfaces are protected from enviro

The first permanent European settlers of Australia arrived in 1788 to establish a penal colony at Sydney, New South Wales (NSW). As the colony grew and wool production increased, more free settlers and emancipists developed farming in inland Australia. During the 1840s veterinarians commenced arriving in small numbers but they were not closely associated with the development and execution of disease control programs, which was left to lay inspectors of stock. The arrival of William Tyson Kendall and coordinated action with Graham Mitchell led to the establishment of a private veterinary colleg

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine the morphometric development and location of the kidneys during the fetal period.
METHODS: Three hundred and forty-four fetal kidneys, obtained from 172 human fetuses and aged between 9 and 40 weeks, were used in this study. Fetuses were divided into four groups according to the gestational weeks: first trimester, second trimester, third trimester, and full-term gestation. First, the anterior abdominal wall was dissected. Topographic localization of the kidneys in the abdominal cavity was then assessed. The distance between the inferior pole of

As seizures in the neonatal period have generally been identified only by direct clinical observation, there is frequently a lack of objectivity as to whether seizures are categorized as epilepsies or non-epilepsies. A major characteristic of neonatal seizures is electro-clinical dissociation and some electro-graphic seizures do not produce clinical symptoms. It is difficult to correctly identify real epilepsies or epileptic syndromes in the neonatal period without ictal electroencephalogram (EEG). Some epileptic syndromes starting in the neonatal period such as early myoclonic encephalopathy,

Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis (TPP) is an unusual complication of hyperthyroidism that frequently presents in a dramatic fashion, necessitating treatment in an emergency department or admission to an intensive care unit. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is characterized by transient, recurrent episodes of flaccid muscle paralysis affecting proximal more severely than distal muscles. Thyrotoxic periodic paralysis is most commonly a complication of Graves' disease in Asian males, although in recent decades, an increasing number of patients from all racial and ethnic backgrounds have been reported.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Autoinflammatory syndromes such as cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes (CAPS) place a heavy burden on affected individuals as well as on their families due to significant morbidity and increased mortality. The inflammatory response in CAPS is caused by an overwhelming activation of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1, which was identified as a promising treatment target.
AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: This article focuses on the pathogenic background and different clinical manifestations in CAPS. Furthermore, the development program and characteristics of canakinuma

Levels of protein C, low at birth, physiologically Increase until six months of age and achieve the adult range after puberty. Protein C deficiency may be congenital or acquired. Severe protein C deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that usually presents in neonatal period with purpura fulminans. Acquired protein C deficiency may be caused by increased consumption (e.g., asphyxia, overt DIC, severe infection without overt DIC, acute VTE) or by decreased synthesis of the active carboxylated protein (e.g. administration of vitamin K antagonists, severe hepatic synthetic disfunction)

After centuries of fluctuant usages, the theriac, this kind of universal drug to cure everything, was popular again starting from the XVIIth century and it will remain at the official french pharmacopea up to 1908. Viper was one of the key components, which was an opportunity for several authors to discuss about its real therapeutic value. Amont the tens of constituants of theriac, opium, in large quantities, was also an important part of this "électuaire". Its success was at the origin of many formulations (such as poors' theriac and celestial theriac), and falsifications, the most famous bei

Both depression and diabetes are common in the perinatal period and result in serious consequences for mother and fetus. Although the association between depression and diabetes is well established, few studies have examined the association between these disorders during the perinatal period, when the etiology of depression and diabetes may differ from other periods over the life course. This article reviews the four most relevant epidemiologic papers that examined the association between depression and diabetes in the perinatal period and makes recommendations for future studies about how bes

Sternal cleft is a rare congenital abnormality. We report on a neonatal case of sternal cleft with median raphe with a follow-up of 3 years. We review the advantages of surgical repair in the neonatal period because the flexibility of the chest wall is maximal and compression of underlying structures is minimal.
