Invisible struggles: WASH insecurity and implications of extreme weather among urban homeless in high-income countries - A systematic scoping review.

This paper aims to provide a deeper understanding of the water-, sanitation- and hygiene (WASH)-related insecurities that people experiencing homelessness in urban areas of high-income countries (HIC) are facing, and how these insecurities are further complicated during extreme weather events. While limited recent research has looked into WASH among people experiencing homelessness in HICs, and while some work has considering the implications of climate change on WASH and health, the nexus of WASH, extreme weather events and homelessness in HICs have not been studied thus far. We conducted the

Estimating Early Language Input in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children With the Language Access Profile Tool.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the Language Access Profile Tool (LAPT) and its psychometric properties with the aim of evaluating its suitability as an alternative to the deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) Language Exposure Assessment Tool (D-LEAT) in clinical practice with DHH children age 12 years and younger. METHOD: We administered both the LAPT and D-LEAT to the caregivers of 105 DHH children 12 years old and younger from across the United States, 40% of whom were interviewed again after a delay of at least 1 month. Each interview resulted in a child-specific estimate of t

Visual-Motor Integration in Language Learning Among Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

Sensorimotor integration is an unconscious process of the brain incorporating multiple senses and movement. This review aimed to synthesize the literature on the role of visual-motor integration in language learning, whether spoken or signed, for deaf and hard of hearing (D/HH) children. Nineteen peer-reviewed studies published between 1980 and 2021 were identified. The number and age of the participants, their hearing status, types of hearing technology, communication modalities, assessment, and findings were synthesized. The review suggests that visual-motor integration and motor development

Healthcare provider satisfaction with environmental conditions in rural healthcare facilities of 14 low- and middle-income countries.

Healthcare provider (HCP) satisfaction is important for staff retention and effective health service delivery. Inadequate resources, understaffing, and ineffective organizational structure may reduce HCP satisfaction in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Some qualitative studies have described links between environmental conditions and job satisfaction in HCPs; however, few studies have explored this link using survey data. This study explores associations between HCP satisfaction and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) infrastructure, cleanliness, and infection prevention and control

American Sign Language Interpreters in Public Schools: An Illusion of Inclusion that Perpetuates Language Deprivation.

PURPOSE: Many deaf children have limited access to language, spoken or signed, during early childhood - which has damaging effects on many aspects of development. There has been a recent shift to consider deafness and language deprivation as separate but related conditions. As such, educational plans should differentiate between services related to deafness and services related to language deprivation. DESCRIPTION: Many deaf children attend mainstream public schools, and the primary service offered to students who use American Sign Language (ASL) is generally a sign language interpreter. ASS

Improving post-hospital care for people who are homeless: Community-based participatory research to community-based action.

This article discusses how community-based participatory research (CBPR) on hospital care transitions in New Haven, Connecticut led to the development of a new medical respite program to better serve patients who are homeless. Key insights include: • Homelessness is an important driver of hospital utilization and must be addressed in efforts to decrease hospital readmissions. • Hospitals and community organizations often serve a shared patient/client base and can work together to develop innovative programs that are beneficial to all parties. • Community-based participatory research methods ar

Oral myiasis: case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: The term myiasis is applied to the injurious action that larvae of certain Diptera cause in vertebrate animals by growing in living or dead tissue. Because of its great destructive potential, appropriate and preventive treatment is necessary. Oral myiasis is a rare pathology in humans and is associated with poor oral hygiene, alcoholism, senility, suppurating lesion, severe halitosis, and other conditions. METHOD: We have presented a case of oral myiasis in a mentally challenged patient. RESULTS: Reviewing the literature revealed that most of the cases involved the anterior par

Gender differences in affective reactions to first coitus.

Men's and women's affective reactions to their first sexual intercourse experience were examined. Eighty-seven college men and 122 college women completed questionnaires about first coital experience. Women were significantly more likely to report that their first sexual experience left them feeling less pleasure, satisfaction, and excitement than men, and more sadness, guilt, nervousness, tension, embarrassment, and fear. Factor analyses were used to group emotions into coherent factors for each sex. Four factors emerged for men: pleasure, romance, anxiety, and guilt. Three factors emerged fo

Recent developments in alcoholism:psychology.

During the past decade, the concerns of psychological research within alcohol studies have been far ranging and even within the areas of personality and neurocognition, the literature is voluminous and many faceted. This chapter focuses on aspects of the personality system that appear to increase vulnerability to excessive alcohol or other drug use or the experience of use-related problems as well as issues related to temporal stability and change in intrapersonal development and drinking behaviors. The bulk of the neurocognitive literature reviewed deals with the impairments that accrue as a

Language analysis skills of children with mental retardation.

The ability of children with moderate mental retardation to analyze orally presented sentences into words and words into syllables and phonemes was studied. The subjects, aged 10 to 15, were grouped by method of reading instruction. All of them could analyze spoken sentences into words and words into syllables equally well. However, subjects receiving code-emphasis reading instruction performed significantly better on the more difficult phoneme manipulation tasks than did subjects receiving whole-word instruction. Results suggest that code-emphasis reading instruction for some subjects with me

Clinical patterns among male transsexual candidates with erotic interest in males.

Male-to-female transsexuals who reported an erotic interest in males showed different patterns of sexual activity. Sexual history was used to categorize a transsexual sample into three groups: 44% abstained from sexual activity (Inactive group), 19% were sexually active but avoided using their penis in sexual activity (Avoidant group), and 37% were sexually active and derived pleasure from their penis (Pleasure group). The groups were compared for differences in gender identification, developmental patterns, and personality. Transsexuals in the Avoidant group showed patterns of traits and expe

[Engel's "psychogenic pain and the patient susceptible to pain": a retrospective, controlled clinical study].

Engel's hypothesis of pain-prone patients having a distinct pattern of developmental psychosocial experiences was tested in a controlled design including four groups of 20 patients each: a) psychogenic pain, b) organic pain, c) psychogenic bodily symptoms, d) organic disease. On admission an open-ended interview, including childhood experiences was tape-recorded. Measures were taken to minimize observer-bias. Patients in group a) had, compared to the other groups, significantly increased prevalence of: "Parents, verbally and/or physically abusive of each other", "parents, abusive of the child"

Sex and gender impacts on the behavioural presentation and recognition of autism.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With increasing awareness of potential differences of autism presentation in nonmale versus male individuals, this review summarizes the rapidly evolving literature on sex and gender impacts on autism across nosology, behavioural presentation, developmental change and contextual recognition biases. RECENT FINDINGS: Most studies have not differentiated sex versus gender impacts. Regarding behavioural presentation, measurement invariance across sex/gender was found in several standard measures. On this basis, diagnosed females overall showed lower restricted/repetitive behavi
