EFFECT OF UNCOMPLICATED ULTRASOUND PHACOEMULSIFICATION CATARACT SURGERY ON CENTRAL MACULAR THICKNESS CHANGES IN THE EARLY POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD IN DIABETIC PATIENTS.

The aim of this prospective study was to determine changes in central macular thickness in the early postoperative period after uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery in diabetic patients using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Uncomplicated ultrasound phacoemulsification cataract surgery causes minimal changes of retinal layer thickness, which may result in subclinical cystoid macular edema development. This prospective study included 55 patients divided into two groups. Group 1 included diabetic patients with cataract, and group 2 included patients with catar…

Impact of Phacoemulsification on Trabeculectomy Bleb Function and Morphology in Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma: A Comparative Study of the Visco-Cushion Effect.

Purpose This study evaluates the impact of phacoemulsification on trabeculectomy bleb morphology and intraocular pressure (IOP) control in patients with primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG). The study also evaluates possible alterations in these effects by intra-operative blocking of internal sclerostomy by high-density viscoelastic (visco-cushion). Methods This is a single-center, interventional, prospective study including patients with PACG who underwent phacoemulsification post-trabeculectomy. This study also evaluated the effect of sodium hyaluronate 1.4% as a cushion to block the sclero…

Real life experience following combined excimer laser trabeculostomy and phacoemulsification in eyes with ocular hypertension or mild glaucoma and cataract.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy and safety of combined phacoemulsification and excimer laser trabeculostomy (ELT) in eyes with cataract and mild controlled glaucoma or ocular hypertension (OHT). METHODS: Single-centre analysis of eyes that underwent phacoemulsification and ELT between 2017 and 2021. Change in intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma medication requirements, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), complications and re-interventions were evaluated. Success was defined as a reduction ≥20% from preoperative IOP, an IOP ≤ 14 mmHg or a reduction in glaucoma medication requirements …

A total of 170 consecutive patients (181 eyes) who were diagnosed with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) and underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation (PEI) combined with goniosynechialysis (GSL) with an instrument under a gonioscope in the Eye Hospital, Wenzhou Medical University from January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2019 were observed. Anterior chamber angle synechiae of 0 (0, 2) clock hour were released after PEI, while after combined goniosynechialysis, synechiae of 6 (3, 8) clock hours were further released. No matter in chronic PACG and acute PACG with cornea ede…

Clinical evaluation of corneal changes after phacoemulsification in diabetic and non-diabetic cataract patients, a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Corneal endothelium morphological abnormalities result in fluid imbalance, stromal swelling, and loss of transparency, thus impairing visual function. Recently, growing number of studies have focused on diabetic corneal abnormalities after cataract surgery and its comparison with non-diabetic patients, the results remain conflicting. Thus, to evaluate the effect of phacoemulsification on the corneal properties in diabetic and non-diabetic patients, prospective studies were comprehensively searched through PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases updated to Jan 2017. A meta-analysis of the 13 ide…

Postoperative endophthalmitis rate associated with routine off-label reuse of single-use phacoemulsification cassettes in more than 1,000,000 consecutive surgeries.

According to a 2025 APAO survey, reuse of phacoemulsification tubing and cassettes appears to be more common in Asian-Pacific countries compared to Europe and North America. We analyzed the phacoemulsification postoperative endophthalmitis (POE) rate from 2016 to 2024 at the Aravind Eye Care System's 15 hospital network. Single-use phacoemulsification cassettes were routinely reused all day (off label) at every facility during this 9-year period. The POE rate was 0.01 % in 1,133,959 consecutive cases. This rate was consistent from year to year and compared favorably with contemporaneous POE da…
