Two cases of burns in children from French Guinea with oculocutaneous albinism.

Oculocutaneous albinism is an autosomal recessive disorder. It is associated with a disorder in the synthesis of melanin pigment, clearly manifested by the absence of colour in the skin, iris, and hair. In addition to its importance for a person's physical appearance, melanin plays a protective role with regard to solar radiation: its absence exposes the skin to a greater risk of related photogenic injury. The two young patients reported, suffering from oculocutaneous albinism, developed first- and second-degree superficial burns after a few hours of exposure to the sun.

Laser treatment of hyperpigmented lesions: position statement of the European Society of Laser in Dermatology.

BACKGROUND: Lasers and intense pulsed light sources (IPLS) are proposed for the treatment of many pigmentary disorders. They are sometimes considered as magic tools able to remove any type of lesions. Although being the best option for several hyperpigmented lesions, they can also worsen some conditions and have potential side-effects. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review was to give evidence-based recommendations for the use of lasers and IPLS in the treatment of hyperpigmented lesions. METHODS: These recommendations were produced for the European Society of Laser Dermatology by a consensus pa

Clinical and genetic analysis of primary bilateral adrenal diseases (micro- and macronodular disease) leading to Cushing syndrome.

Primary bilateral adrenocortical diseases are rare entities that have recently been appreciated as potential causes of Cushing syndrome. They include (i) primary pigmented adrenocortical disease (PPNAD), also known as "micronodular adrenal disease", which is a genetic disorder that is often associated with Carney complex, and (ii) massive macronodular adrenocortical disease (MMAD), a rare disorder of unknown etiology that affects older adults. Carney complex is a multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndrome that affects not only the adrenal cortex, but also the pituitary, thyroid, and gonads. I

Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue in a patient with dyskeratosis congenita: a rare entity.

Dyskeratosis congenita is a rare genetic disorder that results from progressive failure of the bone marrow. It presents with a classic triad of reticular pigmentations of the skin, dystrophic nails, and oral leukoplakia; patients rarely develop cancers. We report a patient with dyskeratosis congenita who presented with squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue.

Incontinentia pigmenti (Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome): seven case reports from one family.

Seven members from a large family who showed signs of incontinentia pigmenti were examined. A clear X-linked dominant transmission was demonstrated, lethal in males. Study of this family shows that vascular abnormalities of the retina and disorders of the retinal pigment epithelium are the most important ocular lesions in the Bloch-Sulzberger syndrome.

Understanding the relationship between pachychoroid spectrum disorders and retinitis pigmentosa: A review of the evidence.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between pachychoroid spectrum disorders and retinitis pigmentosa (RP) or rod-cone dystrophy through a comprehensive literature review. The purpose is to explore the association between these disorders, understand their underlying mechanisms, and summarize the existing hypotheses and opinions. A thorough review of the literature was conducted using PubMed, focusing on articles related to central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC), RP, pachychoroid pigment epitheliopathy, pachychoroid neovasculopathy, polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, focal choroidal

Albinism in the largest extant amphibian: A metabolic, endocrine, or immune problem?

BACKGROUND: Pigment regression is an intriguing phenomenon that can be caused by disorders in melanin metabolism or endocrine regulation, or by autoimmune disorders. Albino animals serve as excellent models for the study of the genetic determination of morphology, particularly the evolution of and molecular mechanisms underlying chromatophore-related diseases in animals and humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The artificial culture of Andrias davidianus, the largest extant amphibian, is flourishing in China due to the great ecological and economic value of this animal. Approximately 0.1% of individ

Griscelli disease maps to chromosome 15q21 and is associated with mutations in the myosin-Va gene.

Griscelli disease (OMIM 214450) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by pigmentary dilution, variable cellular immunodeficiency and onset of acute phases of uncontrolled lymphocyte and macrophage activation, leading to death in the absence of bone-marrow transplantation. The pigmentary dilution is characterized by a diffuse skin pigmentation, silvery hair, large clumps of pigments in the hair shafts (Fig. 1) and an accumulation of melanosomes in melanocytes, with abnormal transfer of the melanin granules to the keratinocytes. Immunological abnormalities are characterized by abs

Pachychoroid: current concepts on clinical features and pathogenesis.

PURPOSE: The term "pachychoroid" refers to a newly described phenotype in which functional and structural choroidal changes are thought to play a key pathogenic role in a spectrum of related retinal disorders. A more detailed understanding of how the choroid is involved within this spectrum and a better knowledge of the most relevant clinical signs of the pachychoroid phenotype are important to differentiate these disorders from other retinal conditions. Our objectives are to provide a literature review of pachychoroid and the commonalities that may be present across pathologies included in th

Multi-trace elements level in drinking water and the prevalence of multi-chronic arsenical poisoning in residents in the west area of Iran.

First, we determined the levels of 8 trace elements (As, Se, Hg, Cd, Ag, Mn, Cr and Pb) in 530 village drinking water sources by graphite furnace or flame atomic absorption spectroscopy method, in Kurdistan Province in the west of Iran. The results showed that the level of As, Cd and Se in 28 village drinking water sources exceeded WHO or National Standard limits. The levels of concentration of arsenic in drinking water ranged from 42 to 1500microg/L. Then in a cross-sectional survey, 587 people from 211 households were chosen for clinical examinations of multi-chronic arsenical poisoning incl

Retinal dysplasia.

Retinal dysplasia is defined as an abnormal growth and differentiation of embryonic retina being more a secondary lesion rather than a disease. Clinically, the disorder may present itself in a surprisingly wide range of severity or of degree from retinal folds to vascularized masses in the vitreous cavity. The condition may appear monosymptomatically, involving only the eye, or as complex disorders with multisystemic anomalies. The histopathologic findings in this disorder recognize characteristic structural deviations of the retina and the pathogenesis seems to be related to the lack of the n

Genome-wide association studies for iris pigmentation and heterochromia patterns in Large White pigs.

Eye colour genetics have been extensively studied in humans since the rediscovery of Mendel's laws. This trait was first interpreted using simplistic genetic models but soon it was realised that it is more complex. In this study, we analysed eye colour variability in a Large White pig population (n = 897) and report the results of GWASs based on several comparisons including pigs having four main eye colour categories (three with both pigmented eyes of different brown grades: pale, 17.9%; medium, 14.8%; and dark, 54.3%; another one with both eyes completely depigmented, 3.8%) and heterochromia

Melanin-concentrating hormone like and somatolactin. A teleost-specific hypothalamic-hypophyseal axis system linking physiological and morphological pigmentation.

Plastic adaptation to match the skin colour to the surrounding is key to survival. Two biological responses in skin colour are associated with background adaptation. A fast "physiological response" that aggregates/disperses the pigment organelles of skin chromatophores, and a slow "morphological response" that alters the type and/or density of pigment cells in the skin. Both responses are linked by unknown mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the role in skin colour regulation of two molecules that form part of a hypothalamic-hypophyseal pathway unique to teleosts, melanin-concentrating horm

Pigmentary dispersion.

A long-term study of primary pigmentary dispersion has shown that the condition is commoner in males than females and appears most frequently in the third decade. After 10 years there may be a significant reduction in the amount of pigment deposited on the cornea, and the condition of several patients receiving treatment for glaucoma has remained under control when treatment has been stopped.

[Ito's syndrome (incontinentia pigmenti achromians)].

Ito's syndrome is a distinct entity characterized by bilateral systematized linear depigmentations denominated by Ito as "incontinentia pigmentiachromians". The syndrome includes a variety of anomalies predominantly affecting the central nervous system, the eyes, and the muscular-skeletal-system. The patient described in this paper was a 26 year old man suffering from a sever scoliosis. This anomaly had not been mentioned in previous case reports.
