World Heart Federation Cholesterol Roadmap.

BACKGROUND: The World Heart Federation has undertaken an initiative to develop a series of Roadmaps. OBJECTIVES: The aim of these is to promote development of national policies and health systems approaches and identify potential roadblocks on the road to effective prevention, detection and management of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC), and strategies for overcoming these. This Roadmap focuses on elevated blood cholesterol, a leading risk factor for myocardial infarction, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. METHODS: Through a review of published gu

Hypertension in minority populations: new guidelines and emerging concepts.

Persistent disparities in hypertension, CKD, and associated cardiovascular disease have been noted in the United States among racial/ethnic minority groups. Overall, these disparities are largely mediated by social determinants of health. Yet, emerging data suggest additional biologic factors in racial/ethnic disparities in hypertension prevalence, complications, particularly CKD, and responses to treatment. Nevertheless, race is a social construct and not a physiologic concept, and ethnicity, federally defined as the binary "Hispanic/Latino" or "not Hispanic/Latino," is also imprecise. Howeve

Homeless adolescents: common clinical concerns.

Homeless youth are at alarmingly high risk for a myriad of physical and psychological problems as a result of both the circumstances that prededed their homelessness, and as a direct consequence of life on the streets. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy, trauma, tuberculosis, uncontrolled asthma, and dermatologic infestations are a few of the health problems with which these youth commonly present. These somatic problems are compounded by high rates of drug and alcohol abuse as well as depression and suicide. Despite the obvious need for medical services, homeless youth often do

A Systems Perspective on Lifestyle Behaviors, Excess Weight, and Healthy Longevity in the European Union.

Background/Objectives: Healthy eating and regular physical activity support chronic disease prevention and healthy aging, while smoking, sugar-sweetened soft drink consumption, and excess weight remain important public health concerns in Europe. Nutritional status and lifestyle behaviors are also relevant to the progression and management of obesity-related metabolic and degenerative diseases, which justify a broader, systems-oriented analysis of lifestyle-health profiles. This study examines the associations between lifestyle behaviors, excess weight, and population health outcomes across Eur

Harnessing Electronic Health Records and Artificial Intelligence for Enhanced Cardiovascular Risk Prediction: A Comprehensive Review.

Electronic health records (EHR) have revolutionized cardiovascular disease (CVD) research by enabling comprehensive, large-scale, and dynamic data collection. Integrating EHR data with advanced analytical methods, including artificial intelligence (AI), transforms CVD risk prediction and management methodologies. This review examines the advancements and challenges of using EHR in developing CVD prediction models, covering traditional and AI-based approaches. While EHR-based CVD risk prediction has greatly improved, moving from models that integrate real-world data on medication use and imagin

Challenges and Opportunities in Diagnosis and Management of Cardiometabolic Risk in Adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to elucidate the limitations of diagnosing metabolic syndrome in adolescents as well as challenges and opportunities in the identification and reduction of cardiometabolic risk in this population. RECENT FINDINGS: There are multiple criticisms of how we define and approach obesity in clinical practice and scientific research, and weight stigma further complicates the process of making and communicating weight-related diagnoses. While the goal of diagnosing and managing metabolic syndrome in adolescents would be to identify individuals at elevated future car

An ecological approach to predict areas with established populations of Ixodes scapularis in Quebec, Canada.

Public health management of Lyme disease (LD) is a dynamic challenge in Canada. Climate warming is driving the northward expansion of suitable habitat for the tick vector, Ixodes scapularis. Information about tick population establishment is used to inform the risk of LD but is challenged by sampling biases from surveillance data. Misclassifying areas as having no established tick population underestimates the LD risk classification. We used a logistic regression model at the municipal level to predict the probability of I. scapularis population establishment based on passive tick surveillance

Reducing health disparities through primary care reform: the New Zealand experiment.

New Zealand experiences significant health disparities related to both ethnicity and deprivation; the average life expectancy for Maori New Zealanders is 9 years less than for other New Zealanders. The government recently introduced a set of primary care reforms aimed at improving health and reducing disparities by reducing co-payments, moving from fee-for-service to capitation, promoting population health management and developing a not for profit infrastructure with community involvement to deliver primary care. Funding for primary care visits will increase by some 43% over 3 years. This pap…

Weight management and physical activity throughout the cancer care continuum.

Mounting evidence suggests that weight management and physical activity (PA) improve overall health and well being, and reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality among cancer survivors. Although many opportunities exist to include weight management and PA in routine cancer care, several barriers remain. This review summarizes key topics addressed in a recent National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine workshop entitled, "Incorporating Weight Management and Physical Activity Throughout the Cancer Care Continuum." Discussions related to body weight and PA among cancer survivors inc

ISCCM Position Statement on the Management of Severe Malaria in Intensive Care Unit.

UNLABELLED: Malaria is a worldwide health concern, but a great majority of cases occur in tropical countries like India. With almost 95% of Indian population living in malaria endemic regions, India contributes to most of the global malaria cases and deaths, outside of African countries. Despite significant advances towards malaria control and eradication, mortality associated with severe malaria remains particularly high. Changing epidemiology, vulnerable patient population, overlapping symptomatology, and limited availability of parenteral preparations of artemisinin derivatives pose signifi

Delivering HIV services in partnership: factors affecting collaborative working in a South African HIV programme.

BACKGROUND: The involvement of Global Health Initiatives (GHIs) in delivering health services in low and middle income countries (LMICs) depends on effective collaborative working at scales from the local to the international, and a single GHI is effectively constructed of multiple collaborations. Research is needed focusing on how collaboration functions in GHIs at the level of health service management. Here, collaboration between local implementing agencies and departments of health involves distinct power dynamics and tensions. Using qualitative data from an evaluation of a health partners

Exploring the links between gallstone disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney stones: A path to comprehensive prevention.

The recent study exploring the bidirectional associations between gallstone disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and kidney stone disease highlights a critical concern in chronic disease management. Given the rising global prevalence of these conditions, understanding their interconnections is essential. The study emphasizes the importance of shared risk factors, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and oxidative stress, and calls for multidisciplinary screening strategies. This approach would improve patient outcomes and reduce the socio-economic burden. While the study cont

European society of endocrinology clinical practice guideline for evaluation and management of menopause and the perimenopause.

Women make up 51% of the world's population, and the global population of postmenopausal women is growing. About 25% of these women experience debilitating menopausal symptoms. Since it is important that all health care professionals have a fundamental knowledge of managing women presenting with symptoms related to the menopause, this European Society of Endocrinology Clinical Practice Guideline was developed. It provides guidance on evaluation and optimal clinical management of women who go through the menopause in middle age, those with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), Early Menopause

Animal assisted therapy in pediatric mental health conditions: A review.

Animal assisted therapy (AAT) has been explored as a treatment option for children with mental health disorders and associated symptoms. AAT can be implemented in inpatient, outpatient, and residential care settings. Some studies demonstrate significant improvement in symptom severity while others report only modest results. In this review, we summarize previous studies that have investigated the applications of AAT for pediatric mental health treatment, focusing on management of symptoms related to post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder,

Access to Treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the Americas: A Call for Action. A Joint Perspective from the Brazilian Thoracic Society, Canadian Thoracic Society, Latin American Thoracic Society, and the American Thoracic Society.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major public health problem in the Americas (a region of the world comprising North, Central, and South America), although there is substantial variation in disease prevalence, morbidity, and mortality between and within nations. Across the Americas, COPD disproportionately affects vulnerable populations, including minoritized populations and impoverished persons, who are more likely to be exposed to risk factors such as tobacco use, air pollution, infections such as tuberculosis, and biomass smoke, but less likely to have adequate healthcare a

Opioid use disorder: Calling pharmacists to action for better preconception and pregnancy care.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) in women of child-bearing potential is problematic in the United States. This has resulted in increasing risk for adverse maternal outcomes, neonatal abstinence syndrome, fetal and neonatal harm, prolonged hospitalizations, and increased health care costs. Pharmacists in all practice settings have opportunities to provide preconception and pregnancy care to prevent and manage OUD. Given pharmacists' scope of practice and expertise, key roles include assessing patients for OUD; mitigating exposure; educating patients regarding potential infant effects; recommending con

The imperative of functional integration for achievement of MDGs.

Pakistan launched its Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) programme in 2006 in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other partners to bridge gaps and upscale interventions aimed at reducing mortality and achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The country will have an uphill task in meeting by 2020, the 2015 targets set for attainment of MDGs 4 and 5. The current Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) level of 30% is considerably below the 60% target set for 2020 and the current Total Fertility Rate (TFR), estimated at 4, is significantly higher than the se

A well-being programme in severe mental illness. Baseline findings in a UK cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with severe mental illness (SMI) have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality than the general population. In the UK, data were limited regarding the known prevalence of physical health screening of SMI patients. AIMS: A total of 966 patients with SMI from seven geographically varied regions in the UK agreed to participate in a 2-year nurse-led intervention (Well-being Support Programme), designed to improve their overall physical health by providing basic physical health checks, health promotion advice, weight management and physical activi

Health professionals need to be able to identify depression in older people.

Healthcare literature shows that depression in older people, as a mental health problem, is often under-recognized and under-managed. This may partly be the result of multiple pathology, a common feature in later life, masking the features of depressive illness. It may also be the consequence of inadequate use of mental health specialists' skills. As the population is ageing rapidly, healthcare professionals will encounter more cases of depression among the older population. Some therapeutic approaches have been suggested for nurses to adopt. More importantly, nurses and other care workers hav
