Quality of placental pathology reports.

The surgical report is an important means of documenting normal and abnormal findings, and for distilling such information into a meaningful clinico-pathologic correlation. An audit of the quality of placental reports from four laboratories was performed using an arbitrary numerical scoring scheme that examined the gross, histologic, and commentary components of each report. The mean scores from the four laboratories were not statistically different from each other. Three (2%) and 48 (33%) of the 147 singleton placentas scored less than 50 and 75%, respectively, on this scoring scheme. None an

Factors to address when periodic abstinence is offered by multi-method family planning programs.

Multi-method family planning programs are committed to informed free choice of contraceptives. Thus they are expected to provide information and education, and facilitate access to services for those individuals and couples who want to practice periodic abstinence. Various factors affect the commitment and ability of multi-method family planning programs for providing periodic abstinence services. These factors include the effectiveness and cost of the method, attitude and technical competence of service providers, information and education strategies, and approaches for providing services. [Crisis, disaster and war: the role of urology in resilient healthcare structures].

Europe's changed security environment requires the German healthcare system to prepare for crises, disasters, and war. Planning must address not only a sudden influx of casualties but also failures of energy supply, information technology, communications, supply chains, and staffing. This does not justify unrestricted expansion of the urologist's professional remit. In mass casualty incidents, urological contributions should follow a graded competency model: trauma bay and team tasks, surgical assistance, defined core urological procedures, and advanced capabilities restricted to selected expe

"They don't think I can cope, because I have got a learning disability…": Experiences of stigma in the lives of parents with learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Parents with learning disabilities report facing a widely held 'presumption of incompetence', placing them under pressure to prove their parenting competence. In collaboration with a learning disability theatre company, an inclusive research methodology explored experiences of parenting with learning disabilities, with a specific focus on the operation of stigma in parents' lives. METHOD: Interviews with 17 mothers and 5 fathers who self-identified as having learning disabilities were co-facilitated by learning-disabled co-researchers, and analysed using thematic analysis, with in

An Evaluation of the United Kingdom Motor Neuron Disease Nurses and Allied Health Professionals (UK MND NAHP) Workforce: A Census.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, motor neuron disease assessment and management should be a coordinated, clinic-based, multidisciplinary team approach. However, the wellbeing, work experiences, and the alignment with national frameworks and standards of the motor neuron disease (MND) nurses and allied health professionals' workforce are severely underreported and under-researched within the literature. Therefore, this report aimed to capture the workforce and their alignment with national frameworks and standards, and to assess their experiences working as an

Mentoring Trainees With Lived Experience of Psychopathology: A Strengths-Based, Cultural-Humility Framework for Psychological Scientists.

Mental-health difficulties are prevalent among psychologists, yet professionals in the field are often discouraged from disclosing their lived experience with psychopathology because of persistent stigma. Lived experience with psychopathology has historically been treated as a deficit within the profession. However, emerging research and perspectives are beginning to challenge this status quo by highlighting that lived experience can be an asset in psychological science and practice. Despite this shift, there remains little guidance on how to navigate this topic in mentor-mentee relationships.

Impact of multi-professional, scenario-based training on postpartum hemorrhage in Tanzania: a quasi-experimental, pre- vs. post-intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Tanzania has a relatively high maternal mortality ratio of 410 per 100,000 live births. Severe postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is a major cause of maternal deaths, but in most cases, it is preventable. However, most pregnant women that develop PPH, have no known risk factors. Therefore, preventive measures must be offered to all pregnant women. This study investigated the effects of multi-professional, scenario-based training on the prevention and management of PPH at a Tanzanian zonal consultant hospital. We hypothesized that scenario-based training could contribute to improved compet

Experiential music therapy in cultivating medial humanistic qualities for medical education: a qualitative analysis based on experiential learning theory.

BACKGROUND: Modern medical education is transforming from a biomedical focus toward a holistic, patient-centered paradigm that values medical humanistic qualities, such as empathy, communication skills and reflective capacity, as the core elements of professional identity. Within this transformation, arts-based therapeutic training such as music therapy has emerged as an effective modality that not only provides technical training but also cultivates humanistic qualities in future physicians. However, music therapy remains underrepresented in medical curricula, and there is a lack of explorati

Working with culturally and linguistically diverse students and their families: perceptions and practices of school speech-language therapists in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Speech and language therapists (SLTs) working in schools worldwide strive to deliver evidence-based services to diverse populations of students. Many suggestions have been made in the international professional literature regarding culturally competent delivery of speech and language services, but there has been limited qualitative investigation of practices school SLTs find to be most useful when modifying their approaches to meet the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students. AIMS: To examine perceptions of nine school SLTs regarding modifications of usual pr

Lived experiences of self-care among older physically active urban-living individuals.

BACKGROUND: Promoting physical activity is a public health priority in most industrial countries, and physical function is an important factor when taking into consideration older people's self-care and health. Despite the increasing challenges associated with urbanization and the aging population, urban life appears to be positive in many ways for urban dwellers. However, the manner in which older people live in urban settings and how this influences their ability to take care of themselves should be considered important knowledge for health professionals and politicians to acquire. The aim o

Cognitive reinforcement: capturing tacit knowledge and enhancing expertise with a biofeedback interface for visual attention.

Objective.Tacit or implicit knowledge refers to know-how that experts possess but often cannot articulate, codify, or explicitly transfer to others. This can present a significant challenge for learning, skill acquisition, and knowledge transfer across various domains, including those that rely on apprenticeships, craftsmanship, sports, and medical imaging diagnosis. This study explores whether expert tacit knowledge can be accessed and leveraged using an electroencephalography (EEG) and gaze-informed biofeedback interface to enhance expertise transfer and training.Approach.We designed an imag

GOComm: A team-based communication intervention to improve clinicians' skills and distress tolerance in family meetings.

BACKGROUND: Medical training often omits systematic approaches to prognostication and goals of care (GOC) communication, leading to end-of-life (EOL) hospital care misaligned with patients' values, lower clinician self-efficacy, and greater clinician distress. OBJECTIVE: This communication training intervention aimed to improve clinician knowledge and self-efficacy and to reduce distress in conducting GOC discussions. METHODS: We developed and implemented GOComm, a 4-h serious illness communication training program across eight campuses of a large health system. Utilizing a train-the-trainer

Expertise-Dependent Brain Network Organization During Music Perception.

Listening to music is a ubiquitous human activity, but little is known about its functional cerebral correlates. We investigated the dynamics of fMRI-based brain activation patterns associated with two musical compositions and examined whether these patterns are modulated by the degree of musical expertise. Specifically, 24 aspiring professionals and 17 amateur musicians listened to a baroque composition by J. S. Bach and an early modern piece by A. Webern. Using measures of dynamic and static functional connectivity and graph theory, we identified two distinct brain states: one characterized
