BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability that is associated with quadriceps weakness. However, strengthening in people with or with risk factors for knee OA can be poorly tolerated.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of a 12-week low-load exercise program, using a hybrid training system (HTS) that uses the combination of neuromuscular electrical stimulation and volitional contractions, for improving thigh muscle strength, knee pain relief, and physical performance in women with or with risk factors for knee OA.

A case of bilateral patella tendon rupture in an otherwise healthy 38-year-old man who sustained relatively minor trauma is presented. A flexion moment against a contracted or contracting quadriceps muscle is thought to have been the mechanism of injury. A survey of the literature yielded reports of three other cases of otherwise healthy patients who had had bilateral simultaneous disruption of the patella tendons.

Sporadic inclusion body myositis (IBM) is distinguished from other inflammatory myopathies based on clinical and histopathologic features, including slowly progressive weakness in middle or later age, with a predilection for finger flexors, wrist flexors, and quadriceps muscles. This study reports the histochemical fiber type composition of the human hamstring muscles. Muscle specimens from necropsy specimens were obtained from seven locations in the hamstring, four locations in the quadriceps, and one location in the adductor magnus.
