Evaluation of pulmonary function using breathing chest radiography with a dynamic flat panel detector: primary results in pulmonary diseases.

OBJECTIVES: Dynamic flat panel detectors (FPD) permit acquisition of distortion-free radiographs with a large field of view and high image quality. The present study was performed to evaluate pulmonary function using breathing chest radiography with a dynamic FPD. We report primary results of a clinical study and computer algorithm for quantifying and visualizing relative local pulmonary airflow. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Dynamic chest radiographs of 18 subjects (1 emphysema, 2 asthma, 4 interstitial pneumonia, 1 pulmonary nodule, and 10 normal controls) were obtained during respiration using an

Evaluation of image quality and dose reduction of 80 kVp neck computed tomography in patients with suspected peritonsillar abscess.

AIM: To evaluate neck computed tomography (CT) with a reduced tube voltage of 80 kVp in patients with suspected peritonsillar abscess (PTA) regarding objective and subjective image quality, and the potential for dose reduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven patients with clinically suspected PTA were retrospectively analysed. Patients were examined using dual-source CT in dual-energy mode. The objective and subjective image quality of 80 kVp images were compared with linearly blended 120 kVp images (M_0.3; 30% of 80 kV, 70% of 140 kV spectrum). Attenuation of abscess rim enhancement, cen

Adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction for volume-rendered computed tomography portovenography: improvement of image quality.

PURPOSE: Adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction (ASIR) is a reconstruction technique for computed tomography (CT) that reduces image noise. The purpose of our study was to investigate whether ASIR improves the quality of volume-rendered (VR) CT portovenography. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval, with waived consent, was obtained. A total of 19 patients (12 men, 7 women; mean age 69.0 years; range 25-82 years) suspected of having liver lesions underwent three-phase enhanced CT. VR image sets were prepared with both the conventional method and ASIR. The required

Global registration of multiple bone fragments using statistical atlas models: feasibility experiments.

We propose a new technique to automatically register multiple bone fragments of a fracture using a global registration method guided by a statistical anatomical atlas model. The atlas is created by using the principal component analysis of three-dimensional meshes generated from the Computed Tomography (CT) data of five left femur bone cadavers. The fracture fragments are initially aligned to the generated atlas by using a local point descriptor which can robustly identify a set of potential corresponding points among fragments and the mean atlas model. A global registration algorithm is then

Characterization of parotid lesions with dual-energy CT: Can virtual unenhanced images permit selective omission of true unenhanced acquisition?

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether virtual unenhanced (VUE) images can permit selective omission of true unenhanced (TUE) images in multiphasic parotid dual-energy CT (DECT) without compromising attenuation accuracy or diagnostic performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 446 lesions from 436 patients with surgically confirmed parotid lesions who underwent three-phase DECT (TUE, early and late contrast); VUE was reconstructed from both contrast phases. Agreement between VUE and TUE attenuation was assessed using Bland-Altman analysis and two one-sided tests (TOST; e

High-resolution CT can differentiate between alloimmune and nonalloimmune lung disease early after hematopoietic cell transplantation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to develop a simple semiquantitative high-resolution CT (HRCT) scoring system to differentiate alloimmune-mediated lung syndromes (allo-LS) from other lung diseases early after hematopoietic cell transplantation. Allo-LS should be differentiated from other abnormalities, such as infections and toxicity, because they are life threatening and require prompt and specific treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 52 pediatric hematopoietic cell transplant recipients with early symptoms of pulmonary disease, a clinical diagnosis was made by an expert physician.

Computerized analysis of mammographic parenchymal patterns for breast cancer risk assessment: feature selection.

Our purpose in this study was to identify computer-extracted, mammographic parenchymal patterns that are associated with breast cancer risk. We extracted 14 features from the central breast region on digitized mammograms to characterize the mammographic parenchymal patterns of women at different risk levels. Two different approaches were employed to relate these mammographic features to breast cancer risk. In one approach, the features were used to distinguish mammographic patterns seen in low-risk women from those who inherited a mutated form of the BRCA1/BRCA2 gene, which confers a very high

Motion correction algorithm improves right coronary artery image quality at heart rates > 75 bpm in non-ECG-gated coronary CT angiography.

BACKGROUND: Motion artifacts caused by cardiac pulsation remain a major technical challenge in coronary CT angiography (CCTA). Although an advanced cardiac motion correction (CMC) algorithm has been developed and successfully implemented in clinical practice, the effectiveness of this algorithm in improving coronary image quality in clinical settings has not yet been fully investigated. PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact and clinical value of a motion correction algorithm on image quality in non-ECG-gated CCTA. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 76 patients who underwent CCTA for suspected co

Dosimetric and geometric evaluation of the use of deformable image registration in adaptive intensity-modulated radiotherapy for head-and-neck cancer.

The aim of this study was to carry out geometric and dosimetric evaluation of the usefulness of a deformable image registration algorithm utilized for adaptive head-and-neck intensity-modulated radiotherapy. Data consisted of seven patients, each with a planning CT (pCT), a rescanning CT (ReCT) and a cone beam CT (CBCT). The CBCT was acquired on the same day (± 1 d) as the ReCT (i.e. at Fraction 17, 18, 23, 24 or 29). The ReCT served as ground truth. A deformed CT (dCT) with structures was created by deforming the pCT to the CBCT. The geometrical comparison was based on the volumes of the defo

Cone-beam CT with flat-panel-detector digital angiography system: early experience in abdominal interventional procedures.

We developed a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) system equipped with a large flat-panel detector. Data obtained by 200 degree rotation imaging are reconstructed by means of CBCT to generate three-dimensional images. We report the use of CBCT angiography using CBCT in 10 patients with 8 liver malignancies and 2 hypersplenisms during abdominal interventional procedures. CBCT was very useful for interventional radiologists to confirm a perfusion area of the artery catheter wedged on CT by injection of contrast media through the catheter tip, although the image quality was slightly degraded, s

Submillimeter measurement of cup migration in clinical standard radiographs.

Assessing the displacement of bony implants is an important topic in arthroplasty, particularly in total hip replacement (THR). The observation of the migration is supposed to provide an insight into the fixation of the implant. Diagnostic standard radiographs of the pelvis are an advantageous data source for this purpose. The previous methods based on these images, however, lack of a thorough consideration of their projective nature. They do, hence, not reach the desired precision, which should lie in the submillimeter range to allow a detection of migration in the first one or two years afte
