INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures (DRF) are one of the most common fractures, accounting for approximately 20% of all fractures. DRF is frequently associated with distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) dislocation, which may be initially overlooked due to subtle symptoms and imaging findings. This can lead to misdiagnosis and suboptimal treatment.
PATIENT CONCERNS: An elderly female patient presented with a distal radius fracture. Early clinical and imaging evaluations failed to identify a co-existing DRUJ dislocation.
DIAGNOSIS: The DRUJ dislocation was subsequently diagnosed after careful asse…

INTRODUCTION: Successfully reduced distal radius fractures (DRFs) often redisplace while casted. Poor cast moulding might be a risk factor for redisplacement of DRFs. This study aims to assess whether cast moulding quality, as determined by casting indices, impact the risk of redisplacement. Also, we assessed the influence of the cast applicant and the material used on the redisplacement risk.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed cases from a prospective cohort (trial registration NL8311). We included 172 adequately reduced and circumferentially casted DRFs with a complete two-w…

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are among the most common fractures, traditionally evaluated using two-dimensional (2D) parameters. These methods are unreliable in significantly displaced fractures, with discrepancies among evaluators. Recent advancements in imaging have introduced three-dimensional (3D) models, but standard parameters for 3D reduction morphology are not well established. This study aimed to develop a novel method for evaluating 3D reduction morphology based on the normal vector of a plane defined by anatomical reference points, comparing the reduction shape to the mirror …

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic genu recurvatum is uncommon condition but functionally significant deformity of the knee, most often resulting from loss of the posterior tibial slope following proximal tibial fractures. This condition can lead to pain, instability, and limitations in daily activities. Surgical correction aims to restore both sagittal and coronal alignment to alleviate symptoms and improve function. We present a case of post-traumatic genu recurvatum secondary to a malunited bicondylar proximal tibial fracture, successfully managed with anterior open-wedge flexion valgus osteotomy.

Surgical fixation of distal radius fractures is among the more common procedures performed by hand surgeons. The approach to surgical management is based on a variety of factors including injury mechanism, fracture pattern, patient characteristics, bone quality, soft tissue injury, and surgeon preference. For the majority of fracture types, volar locking plate fixation has become the most commonly used method of fracture fixation. Although uncommon, complications can arise following this form of treatment, one of which is escape of an articular fragment with resultant carpal instability. More …

INTRODUCTION: It is our hypothesis that physician-specific variables affect the management of distal radius (DR) fractures in addition to patient-specific factors.
METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted evaluating treatment differences between Certificate of Additional Qualification hand surgeons (CAQh) and board-certified orthopaedic surgeons who treat patients at level 1 or level 2 trauma centers (non-CAQh). After institutional review board approval, 30 DR fractures were selected and classified (15 AO/OTA type A and B and 15 AO/OTA type C) to create a standardized patient data se

We present a case of a 26-year-old right-hand-dominant male stage manager who underwent open reduction internal fixation of right open both-bone forearm fractures at the age of 13. The patient presented 13 years and 8 months later with proximal hardware migration, soft tissue erosion, and subsequent hardware exposure. The patient underwent hardware removal with resolution of pain and improvement in range of motion. To the best of our knowledge, this complication has not been published before.

Background Displaced distal radius fractures are prone to redisplacement after manipulation. This can result in the need for delayed surgery. Several criteria have been studied to predict the likelihood of redisplacement. We hypothesized that reduction in the volar cortex would be an additional predictive factor. Purpose The aim of this study was to assess whether the quality of the volar cortex reduction predicts the subsequent need for further intervention (surgery or remanipulation). As a secondary outcome, we assessed whether the quality of the reduction predicts the rate of malunion. Me…
