We have determined the nucleotide sequence of a segment of chromosome III contained in the right part of the lambda PM3270 clone, for a total of 8824 bp. This sequence contains an unusual long open reading frame, YCR601, of 6501 bp that encodes for a protein of 2167 amino acids that show no homology with other known proteins. YCR601 was disrupted by internal deletion and insertion of LEU2 gene and is a non-essential gene, however, it is transcribed during vegetative growth yielding a polyadenylated mRNA of approximately 7 kb.

Sixty-seven benign precancerous cutaneous lesions from the ears of 51 sheep were examined for papillomavirus DNA by hybridisation to radioactively labelled or biotinylated probes of bovine papillomavirus type 1 (BPV 1) DNA under varying conditions of stringency. The gene that encodes the extracellular esterase produced by Streptomyces scabies has been cloned and sequenced. The gene was identified by hybridization to a synthetic oligonucleotide that corresponds to the amino-terminal amino acid sequence determined for the secreted form of the esterase. Two Trichinella isolates from humans in France were characterized using reproductive capacity indices and a combination of molecular methods. Using pulsed-field gradient-gel electrophoresis (PFGE) we compared two fragile X (fra(X] chromosomes from individuals in families that exhibit linkage heterogeneity between fra(X) and coagulation factor IX (F9). The analysis of very large restriction fragments indicated that there is a structural difference in the interval between fra(X) and F9 near the locus DXS105.
