PURPOSE: To describe an adult with chickenpox resulting in systemic vasculitis and bilateral retinal vascular occlusions.
METHODS: Single case report.
RESULTS: A 58-year-old man with chickenpox complicated by disseminated varicella-zoster systemic and retinal vasculitis resulting in a combined arterial and venous occlusion in one eye with multiple branch retinal vein occlusions in the other eye. One was a 34-year-old woman with systemic lupus erythematosus who showed abnormalities of the cilioretinal arterial and retinal venous circulations. RECENT FINDINGS: OSA is associated with the development of diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and central serous chorioretinopathy. The severity of OSA and biomarkers such as the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) correlate with the severity of retinal disease. Congenital retinal macrovessel is a rare condition in which anomalous retinal vessels cross the macula. Visual impairment can result if the anomalous vessels pass across the foveola, if foveolar cysts form, or if hemorrhage occurs. A now 17-year-old African-American female has an anomalous retinal vein that crossed the macular region beyond the horizontal raphe in her left eye. This patient exhibited the classic characteristics of congenital macrovessels. Her visual acuity remained unaffected after a 5-year follow-up and therefore treatment was not required.
