Comparative outcomes of robotic versus laparoscopic total proctocolectomy.

Total proctocolectomy (TPC) with end ileostomy is performed for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or diffuse polyposis/malignancy, but evidence regarding robotic versus laparoscopic TPC remains limited. We hypothesized that robotic TPC is associated with lower conversion rates. We queried the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program's proctectomy database (2016-2023) for adult patients undergoing elective TPC for IBD or polyposis/malignancy. Cases were categorized by intended approach (robotic versus laparoscopic). Conversion to open surgery served as the primary endpoint, with operative t

A Dataset for Depth in Robotic Endoscopy with Dynamic Scenarios (DRENDS).

Depth perception in robotic minimally invasive surgery remains a critical challenge for many downstream tasks, demanding advanced depth estimation techniques and ground truth data for their validation. Current datasets lack data with ground-truth depth information in dynamic scenarios; therefore, we present DRENDS (Depth in Robotic Endoscopy with Dynamic Scenarios)1, a novel dataset comprising sequences of high-resolution stereo images captured during the robotic laparoscopic manipulation of a human phantom and ex vivo porcine tissue, along with ground-truth point clouds for each frame and cal

Robotic Training and Neural Reorganization in Stroke: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke is a primary contributor to global adult morbidity, frequently resulting in debilitating gait disturbances that impede independence. While standard neurorehabilitation remains essential, the advent of robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) provides a platform for high-intensity, reproducible interventions designed to stimulate neuroplasticity. This systematic review evaluated the literature from 2015 to 2025 to determine the influence of RAGT on neural reorganization and functional outcomes in stroke survivors. METHODOLOGY: A systematic search of MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and

Autonomous Frameless Spine Registration and Robot-Assisted Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate and efficient patient registration remains a critical challenge in robot-assisted spine surgery, where current methods often rely on invasive bone-mounted frames or intraoperative imaging that increases radiation exposure and procedural complexity. METHOD: This article presents a novel non-invasive and contactless spine registration system that integrates a skin-affixed, radiopaque floating-point mask with a robot-mounted monocular camera. The system was evaluated in phantom experiments to quantify registration accuracy and pedicle-screw-axis targeting performance. The sys

Visual-tactile perception for a biomimetic robot in constrained environments.

Environmental perception is a crucial foundation for enhancing the application potential of biomimetic robots. Motivated by the complementary roles of visual and tactile sensing observed in rats, this work proposes a visual-tactile perception for a small-scale bio-inspired robotic rat. The method leverages binocular vision to estimate depth images through an attention-based network and improve perception and localization accuracy by 14.22% based on a dynamic objects removal module. Besides, the whisker sensor is applied to enhance the robot's ability to identify object contours and environment

Touching with torque enables human-level robotic dexterity.

Achieving human-like forceful manipulation remains a major challenge in robotics because of the lack of critical environmental interaction cues such as collisions, balance, and resistance. We present a torque-angle-pressure (TAP) tactile sensor leveraging magnetic flux density gradients to achieve bidirectional, ultrasensitive (~0.1°, ~0.4 newton-millimeter), and high-linearity (R2 = 0.99) sensing over a wide range (±241.6 newton-millimeter) through a single readout channel. The accurate torque sensing ability provides both force and distance information, bringing the environment into the inte…

Extreme dynamic symmetry enables omnidirectional and multifunctional robots.

Symmetry is a central organizing principle in natural systems, yet its use as a unifying design strategy in robotics has largely remained limited to geometric form. We show that symmetry can instead be leveraged at the level of dynamic actuation capability. We introduce dynamic symmetry, the uniformity of a robot's attainable center-of-mass accelerations, and formalize it through a measure coined as dynamic isotropy. Across more than 1000 simulated morphologies, we found that higher dynamic symmetry consistently improved trajectory tracking, task success, robustness, resiliency, and energy eff…

Social priming enhances young children's trust in robots.

This study examined preschoolers' selective trust in a robot versus a human informant, and whether social priming may increase trust by making the robot's social characteristics more salient, using the word-learning paradigm. Children also completed the Theory of Mind (ToM) scale, along with an adapted naïve biology task and an Attribution of Mental States questionnaire assessing their beliefs about robots. In Experiment 1, eighty-six Italian children (aged 3 and 5) observed a competent robot (NAO) correctly labeling familiar objects and an incompetent human mislabeling them. The two informant

Takeoff of an all-polymer micro aerial flying robot.

Flying insects are agile and can withstand impacts and compression because of their low inertia and resilient wings, exoskeletons, and muscles. These capabilities inspire the development of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) for surveillance, disaster response, and environmental monitoring in confined or hazardous spaces. However, MAVs, especially subgram flapping-wing platforms, remain fragile because they rely on rigid components in their wings, transmissions, or actuators. We report a resilient all-polymer flying robot weighing 185 milligrams, powered by an electrostrictive bending actuator that

Establishing a robotic kidney transplant program for obese recipients.

The integration of minimally invasive and robotic techniques into transplant surgery has led to reduced perioperative morbidity and shortened hospital stays. Robotic-assisted kidney transplantation (RAKT) is now established across multiple transplant centers, offering expanded access to care—particularly for patients with elevated body mass index (BMI), a population traditionally underserved by conventional surgical approaches. Despite its growing clinical promise, widespread adoption of RAKT remains limited, primarily due to the absence of a structured implementation framework. In this review

Automatic imitation towards robots is not influenced by the intentional stance.

Automatic imitation refers to the unconscious tendency to copy observed actions, a phenomenon that is robustly weaker when observing robots compared to humans. The present study investigated whether individual differences in the tendency to adopt the intentional stance (the epistemic strategy to attribute mental states to an agent or entity to predict/explain its behaviours) modulates this automatic imitation bias against robots. To do so, participants completed an online Automatic Imitation Task using both human and robotic hands, along with the Intentional Stance Test-2 (IST-2) and measures

Environmental stewardship and robotic surgery: innovation without compromise.

Robotic surgery represents a major paradigm shift in surgical care, delivering significant improvements in precision, ergonomics, and postoperative patient outcomes. However, the rapid global proliferation of these systems necessitates a critical evaluation of their environmental sustainability. The healthcare sector, particularly within hospital operating theatres, is already a highly resource-intensive environment contributing substantially to national greenhouse gas emissions. The integration of robotic platforms may further exacerbate this ecological footprint through energy-intensive cons

Learning curve for robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: The learning curve refers to the relationship between a learner's execution of a task and the number of attempts or time necessary to perform it in a predictable, reliable, and optimal fashion. The learner's competence in a task should improve over time as they execute the job more frequently. The present investigation aims to clarify the learning curve associated with robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (TKA). METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Eifelklinik St. Brigida, Simmerath, Germany, between 2021

A novel wearable interface based on IMUs for robotic endoscopy.

PURPOSE: Flexible endoscopic robots hold broad application prospects in gastrointestinal tract surgery. However, the lack of intuitiveness and heterogeneity between the interface and flexible endoscopic robots results in insufficient operational intuitiveness and prolonged surgery time. Developing an agile, high-precision, and intuitive control method for flexible endoscopic robots has become a challenge. METHODS: This work proposed a novel method for estimating upper-limb's pose using inertial measurement units (IMUs) by building the upper-limb kinematic model and estimating the pose using s
