Central nervous system involvement during infection by Phlebovirus toscana of residents in natural foci in central Italy (1977-1988).

Central nervous system (CNS) involvement was detected during infection caused by the sand fly-transmitted Phlebovirus Toscana. One hundred fifty-five cases of Toscana virus-associated meningitis or meningoencephalitis were identified in a survey that lasted ten years, conducted in two regions of central Italy. Diagnosis was performed by different serologic tests. A combination of hemagglutination-inhibition and plaque-reduction neutralization or indirect immunofluorescence for IgM, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays for IgM were considered the most suitable tests for the diagnosis of Tosca…

Analysis of the Fracture Resistance of Buildings on Composite Foundations with Horizontal Reinforcement Crossing Normal Faults.

To investigate the performance of horizontally reinforced composite foundations in resisting surface rupture of normal faults, this study designed and conducted a series of physical model tests. A systematic comparative analysis was performed on the fracture resistance of sites with three-layer sand, five-layer sand, and three-layer clay geogrid horizontally reinforced composite foundations under 70° normal fault dislocation. The results indicate that significant changes in earth pressure serve as a precursor indicator of fault rupture, and their evolution process reveals the internal energy a…

Management of very severe tungiasis cases through repeated community-based treatment with a dimeticone oil formula: A longitudinal study in a hyperendemic region in Uganda.

Tungiasis (sand flea disease) is a neglected tropical disease that is endemic in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Tungiasis causes pain, mobility restrictions, stigmatisation and reduced quality of life. Very severe cases with hundreds of sand fleas have been described, but treatment of such cases has never been studied systematically. During a larger community-based tungiasis control programme in a hyperendemic region in Karamoja, northeastern Uganda, 96 very severe tungiasis cases were identified and treated with the dimeticone formula NYDA®. They were repeatedly followed-up and treated…

Detection of Leishmania infantum DNA in Pintomyia evansi and Lutzomyia longipalpis in Honduras.

BACKGROUND: The two most abundant sand fly species on the Honduran Pacific coast are Lutzomyia (Lutzomyia) longipalpis and Pintomyia (Pifanomyia) evansi. Both species are known vectors of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum, the etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in the Americas. Although VL and non-ulcerative cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL) are endemic on the Pacific versant of the Central American Pacific, the latter is the most frequent manifestation of leishmaniasis there. We evaluated the circulation of Leishmania spp. in the sand fly species on El Tigre Island, an endemic area …

Salt rejection and water flux through a tubular pervaporative polymer membrane designed for irrigation applications.

The performance of a hydrophilic polyester tubular pervaporative membrane in treating high-salinity water for irrigation was investigated. The membrane was filled with contaminated water and placed in air, soil or sand media. When this occurs water diffuses through the tube, trapping salts within the tube. Sorption and permeation tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to assess salt rejection and permeate flux through the tubular membrane when surrounded by deionized water, air, top soil or silver sand. Mean water uptake by the membrane was 0.5 L x m(-2) at room temperature and…

Geographic distribution of human blastomycosis cases in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA: association with urban watersheds.

Most studies of endemic blastomycosis and outbreaks have involved rural areas. Case homesites in rural Northern Wisconsin have been associated with waterways and sand soils. ARC-GIS was used to geocode addresses and to observe geographic features of homesites from 45 State-mandated reports of human blastomycosis in urban Milwaukee County, Southeastern Wisconsin 2000-2004. Each case property was directly observed, and houses and duplexes (N = 38) were compared with 151 same-street control homesites. Categorical data was analyzed using a chi-square or Fisher's exact test; continuous variables by…

The contribution of cell wall integrity to gastric emptying and in vitro starch digestibility and fermentation performance of highland barley foods.

Studies have shown that the structure, composition, and bioavailability of compounds in whole grains are affected by processing and the role of cells walls. In this study, the effects of different processing methods on highland barley, one of the mostly widely produced whole grains worldwide, were investigated. The processing methods applied were flaking-boiling (HB flake), sand-roasting (Puffed HB), and sand-roasting-milling (Tsamba). Results showed Puffed HB and Tsamba had higher levels of damaged starch content, starch short-range molecular order, and relative crystallinity than HB flake. T…

Synergistic removal of sulfamethoxazole and dimethyl phthalate by five constructed wetland substrates.

Frequent detection and joint toxicity of sulfonamides (SAs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) in water environment have caused serious health and safety problems that can be reduced by vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW). However, it remains unclear what kind of substrate used in VFCW can synergistically remove SAs and PAEs. In this study, it was determined if biochar, zeolite, vermiculite, peat and sand synergistically removed sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and dimethyl phthalate (DMP) as representatives of SAs and PAEs by using batch and column experiments. The batch experiments showed that pseu…

Tungiasis: a poorly documented tropical dermatosis.

Tungiasis is the parasitic skin disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, also called the jigger flea, found in most intertropical countries. The contamination occurs when walking barefoot in the sand: adult females actively burrow the foot epidermis leading to self-limited lesions responsible for itching or pain. The diagnosis is made on clinical observation and history of travelling to an endemic country. The simple treatment is surgical extraction of the flea.

Adverse effects of meteorological factors and air pollutants on dry eye disease: a hospital-based retrospective cohort study.

Although previous studies have suggested that meteorological factors and air pollutants can cause dry eye disease (DED), few clinical cohort studies have determined the individual and combined effects of these factors on DED. We investigated the effects of meteorological factors (humidity and temperature) and air pollutants [particles with a diameter ≤ 2.5 μ m (PM2.5), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and carbon monoxide (CO)] on DED. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 53 DED patients. DED was evaluated by Symptom Assessment in Dry Eye (SANDE), tear secretion, tear film break-up …

Feeding behavior of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), a putative vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Venezuela.

Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis Arrivillaga & Feliciangeli is the first new sand fly species in the L. longipalpis species complex that has been formally described since it was separated by genetic as well as by morphological characters. It is the putative vector of the American visceral leishmaniasis in La Rinconada, Curarigua, a restricted focus in central western Venezuela. We investigated the feeding behavior of this species. The blood meals from 210 of 429 (48.9%) engorged females caught by CDC light traps were identified by a dot enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay using antisera against hu…

Splenic silicosis, a rare extrapulmonary manifestation of occupational silica exposure: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Silicosis is a well-recognised occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of crystalline silica dust; however, extrapulmonary involvement, particularly splenic silicosis, remains rare and underreported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 46-year-old female sand sifting machine operator presented with six years of occupational silica exposure at a sand classification and packing factory. In 2005, she developed respiratory symptoms, and chest radiography revealed diffuse nodular opacities, although silicosis was not diagnosed at that time. In October 2024, approximately 19…

The Phlebotomus papatasi systemic transcriptional response to trypanosomatid-contaminated blood does not differ from the non-infected blood meal.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis, caused by parasites of the genus Leishmania, is a disease that affects up to 8 million people worldwide. Parasites are transmitted to human and animal hosts through the bite of an infected sand fly. Novel strategies for disease control require a better understanding of the key step for transmission, namely the establishment of infection inside the fly. METHODS: The aim of this work was to identify sand fly systemic transcriptomic signatures associated with Leishmania infection. We used next generation sequencing to describe the transcriptome of whole Phlebotomus pap…

The sandfish lizard's aerodynamic filtering system.

Particulate air pollution has an adverse effect on cardiovascular and respiratory health. Air filtration systems are therefore essential in closed indoor environments. While mechanical filtration is described as an efficient technology, particle filters may act as a source of pollution if not correctly installed and frequently maintained. The sandfish lizard, a sand swimmer that spends nearly its whole life in fine desert sand, inspired us to rethink traditional filtering systems due to its unique ability of filtering sand from its nasal cavity. During a slow, prolonged inhalation, strong cros…

Discovery of markers of exposure specific to bites of Lutzomyia longipalpis, the vector of Leishmania infantum chagasi in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Sand flies deliver Leishmania parasites to a host alongside salivary molecules that affect infection outcomes. Though some proteins are immunogenic and have potential as markers of vector exposure, their identity and vector specificity remain elusive. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We screened human, dog, and fox sera from endemic areas of visceral leishmaniasis to identify potential markers of specific exposure to saliva of Lutzomyia longipalpis. Human and dog sera were further tested against additional sand fly species. Recombinant proteins of nine transcripts encoding secreted…

Evaluation of phosphorus runoff from sandy soils under conservation tillage with surface broadcasted recovered phosphates.

Potential new sources of phosphorus (P) fertilizer are the recovered P from livestock wastewater through chemical precipitation and the ash from combusting animal manures. Although most of the research on P losses from conservation tillage include high water-soluble P compounds from commercial fertilizer sources, information on the use of non-conventional, low water-soluble, recycled P sources is scarce. Particularly for sandy soils of the United States (US) Southeastern Coastal Plain region, research driven information on P loss into the environment is needed to determine recommendations for …
