Morphea-like discoid lupus erythematosus in a patient with a history of polyacrylamide gel injection: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is an autoimmune disease with multifactor etiology which develops in genetically susceptible patients. Rarely, DLE lesions can mimic other connective tissue disorders such as morphea. The growing application of soft tissue fillers is associated with increasing complications. Some substances used for soft tissue augmentation such as silicon implants may trigger lupus erythematosus diseases. CASE REPORT: Here we report a case of morphea-like discoid lupus erythematosus developed several years after polyacrylamide dermal filler (PAAG) injection for f

Development and Validation of the Morphea Activity Measure in Patients With Pediatric Morphea.

IMPORTANCE: Morphea is an insidious inflammatory disorder of the skin and deeper tissues. Determining disease activity is challenging yet important to medical decision-making and patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a scoring tool, the Morphea Activity Measure (MAM), to evaluate morphea disease activity of any type or severity that is easy to use in clinical and research settings. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This pilot diagnostic study was conducted from September 9, 2019, to March 6, 2020, in 2 phases: development and validation. During the development phase, 14 morph

Linear discoid lupus erythematous simulating en coup de sabre morphea in a female chronic granulomatous disease carrier.

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), a subtype of chronic cutaneous lupus may be observed in a linear pattern. A 21-year-old woman with history of chronic granulomatous disease state presented to our clinic for a chronic six-year skin eruption on her left eyebrow, left cheek, and left forehead. A punch biopsy of involved left forehead skin was performed and revealed perivascular and periadnexal lymphohistiocytic infiltrate without features of morphea or panniculitis, confirming the histopathologic changes of cutaneous lupus erythematous. The patient was diagnosed with linear DLE, mimicking en co

Connective Tissue Disease: Current Concepts.

Connective tissue diseases often prominently affect the skin, requiring dermatologists to play an important role in diagnosis and treatment of these patients. Herein we describe updates on the pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment of 4 major connective tissue diseases: dermatomyositis, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, limited scleroderma (morphea), and cutaneous vasculitis. Many of these updates promise to improve clinical care of patients who suffer from dermatologic involvement of these diseases and are the result of research performed by dermatologists who have expertise in these con

Morphoea profunda and its relationship to eosinophilic fasciitis.

In this small case series, all eight patients were women in their fifth and sixth decades. This is similar to the female predominance in morphoea and less in keeping with eosinophilic fasciitis (EF). All cases had diffuse induration of their limbs with both proximal and distal patterns of distribution, and five of the patients exhibited peau d'orange skin. All patients had diffuse induration of the lower limbs and half had restricted ankle movements. Six patients had concomitant superficial morphoea. This group of patients demonstrated a unique subtype of the morphoea spectrum with some featur

Case report: One case of primary AL amyloidosis repeatedly misdiagnosed as scleroderma.

INTRODUCTION: Amyloid light chain (AL) results from the deposition of immunoglobulin light chain fragments, and can affect multiple organs/systems. Our patient was diagnosed as scleroderma repeatedly because of extensive skin thickening and hardening, but the treatment was not effective. We did extensive laboratory examinations including serum/urine protein electrophoresis and flow cytometry assay of bone marrow aspiration. CONCLUSION: A diagnosis of primary AL amyloidosis was established.

Scleroderma skin ulcers definition, classification and treatment strategies our experience and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Skin ulcers (SU) are one of the most frequent manifestations of systemic sclerosis (SSc). SSc-SU are very painful, often persistent and recurrent; they may lead to marked impairment of patient's activities and quality of life. Despite their severe impact on the whole SSc patient's management, the proposed definition, classification criteria, and therapeutic strategies of SSc-SU are still controversial. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to elaborate a comprehensive proposal of definition, classification, and therapeutic strategy of SSc-SU on the basis of our long-term single cente

A case of radiation-induced generalized morphea with prominent mucin deposition and tenderness.

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced morphea is a rare complication of radiation therapy. The affected areas are generally restricted to the radiation field or to the nearby surrounding area. CASE REPORT: A 67-year-old Japanese woman with a history of right breast cancer followed by adjuvant radiotherapy was referred our hospital because of 7-year history of symmetrical indurated erythematous plaques on her trunk. Three months after completion of irradiation, erythematous plaques developed on her right chest and gradually spread accompanied tenderness. She did not have a history of trauma to her rig

Oral mucosal morphea: a new variant.

Morphea is a cutaneous disorder characterized by an excessive collagen deposition. While in almost all cases the sclerosing process exclusively affects the skin, there are anecdotal cases in which associated mucosal involvement has been described. We here report the case of a woman developing a whitish indurated plaque over the left upper vestibular mucosa and hard palate leading to dental mobility and exposure of the roots of several teeth. Cone beam computed tomography of the left maxilla showed bone resorption involving the upper cuspid to the second molar region with widened periodontal li

Nodular morphea.

Scleroderma may present as being strictly limited to the skin, as in morphea, or within a multiorgan disease, as in systemic sclerosis. Accordingly, cutaneous manifestations vary clinically. In nodular or keloidal scleroderma, patients develop lesions that are clinically indistinguishable from a keloid; however, the histopathological findings are more variable. We describe a 16-year-old girl with morpheic lesions for 3-4 years and additional development of keloidal nodules within these lesions. The histological examination revealed a hypertrophic scar besides morphea.

Correction of facial linear scleroderma 'coup de sabre' with BoneSource.

Linear scleroderma is a subtype of localised scleroderma. When linear scleroderma occurs on the anterior portion of the scalp and forehead, it may assume an ivory-like, depressed configuration similar to the stroke of a sabre and called 'coup de sabre'. Atrophic changes affect subcutaneous tissue and skin, with later involvement of the muscles and osteocartilaginous framework. Various operative interventions, such as skin flap, fat graft, dermofat graft and bone graft could be used for correction of this deformity, but there is no definite satisfactory treatment modality. We report the case of

Scleroderma-like cutaneous lesions induced by paclitaxel: a case study.

Paclitaxel is a recent antineoplastic agent that belongs to the taxane family. Its activity has been demonstrated in advanced and refractory ovarian, breast, lung, and head and neck cancer. Adverse cutaneous reactions to paclitaxel have been reported, namely bullous fixed drug eruption, onycholysis, acral erythema, erythema multiforme, and pustular eruption. We report the first case of scleroderma-like changes after paclitaxel administration. A 63-year-old patient presented with an edematous and infiltrated erythema of the head, neck, axillae, and left hand 10 days after administration of pacl
