Covid-19 affects taste independent of taste-smell confusions: results from a combined chemosensory home test and online survey from a large global cohort.

People often confuse smell loss with taste loss, so it is unclear how much gustatory function is reduced in patients self-reporting taste loss. Our pre-registered cross-sectional study design included an online survey in 12 languages with instructions for self-administering chemosensory tests with 10 household items. Between June 2020 and March 2021, 10,953 individuals participated. Of these, 5,225 self-reported a respiratory illness and were grouped based on their reported COVID test results: COVID-positive (COVID+, N = 3,356), COVID-negative (COVID-, N = 602), and COVID unknown for those wai

Eight month follow-up of delinquent adolescents: predictors of short-term outcome.

Clinicians working with young delinquents are concerned with finding methods to predict recidivism in these subjects. It has not been investigated yet to what extent psychiatric assessment can be of any help in this field. In this study, we investigated whether psychiatric assessment can help to predict recidivism in already delinquent adolescents. By means of semi-structured psychiatric assessment (Child Assessment Schedule), developmental interview of the parents and self-report instruments, we assessed the psychiatric status of 72 delinquent adolescents, adjudicated before the Juvenile Cour

Characteristics and gender differences among self-excluded casino problem gamblers: Missouri data.

The present study explores gender-related differences in the demographic and gambling-related characteristics of 2670 problem gamblers participating in a state-administered (Missouri) casino self-exclusion program between 2001 and 2003. Female (n=1298, 48.4%) and male (n=1372, 51.1%) participants ranged in age from 21 to 84 years. Gender-related differences were noted among demographic variables, patterns of gambling behavior, reasons for self-exclusion, and involvement in self-help, counseling, and bankruptcy services. Female self-excluders were more likely than males to be older at time of a

Being a solo mother without the involvement of a partner: an exploration of parenting experiences and support needs.

An increasingly common family type, often referred to as 'solo mothers', 'single mothers by choice' or 'choice mothers', comprises women who intentionally become mothers without the involvement of a partner. Although solo mothers are often described as self-determined, motivated and well prepared for parenting, with both economic and social resources, little is known about their parenting experiences and emotional and practical support needs. This cross-sectional exploratory study used an online survey to examine sources of emotional and practical parenting support, ease of asking for help and

The (cost) effectiveness of guided internet-based self-help CBT for dialysis patients with symptoms of depression: study protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Only a minority of dialysis patients with depressive symptoms are diagnosed and receive treatment. Depressive symptoms are highly prevalent in this population and are associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Underlying factors for this undertreatment may be the lack of evidence for the safety and effectivity of antidepressant medication, the reluctance of patients to adhere to antidepressant medication, the lack of mental healthcare provision in somatic healthcare environments and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) related physical limitations that complicate face-to-face psychothera

A randomized clinical trial of the effectiveness of a Web-based health behaviour change support system and group lifestyle counselling on body weight loss in overweight and obese subjects: 2-year outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss can prevent and treat obesity-related diseases. However, lost weight is usually regained, returning to the initial or even higher levels in the long term. New counselling methods for maintaining lifestyle changes are urgently needed. OBJECTIVES: An information and communication technology-based health behaviour change support system (HBCSS) that utilizes persuasive design and methods of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) was developed with the aim of helping individuals to maintain body weight. The purpose of this study was to assess whether CBT-based group counsellin

Self-harm behaviors and their intentions: a cross-cultural analysis.

BACKGROUND: Self-harm behaviors (performed with either lethal and non-lethal intentions) are common, especially among individuals suffering from mood disorders, and the reasons individuals self-harm vary both by person and by the type of behavior. Understanding these variations may help clinicians determine levels of risk more accurately. AIMS: To understand whether culture and gender are associated with the likelihood of engaging in specific self-harm behaviors and whether the intention (lethal, ambivalent, non-lethal) of these behaviors vary with culture and gender. METHODS: 2826 individua

Cognitive behavioural therapy for menopausal symptoms: a systematic review of efficacy in improving quality of life.

Menopause, whilst a natural biological transition, can cause a range of symptoms that have a significant, negative impact on some women’s quality of life. Psychological interventions have been proposed as a means of alleviating the detrimental impact of menopausal symptoms and supporting women’s coping capacity during this period. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in improving menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances and enhancing quality of life. The review covers research published fro

A Pilot Study of Adjunctive Group Therapy to Enhance Coping With Cognitive Challenges and Support Cognitive Health After Electroconvulsive Therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Concerns about the cognitive adverse effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) are common among recipients of the treatment despite its relatively small adverse effects on cognitive functioning. Interventions aimed at remediating or improving coping with cognitive adverse effects of ECT have not been developed. The Enhancing Cognitive Domains after ECT (ENCODE) program is a new group intervention aimed at teaching self-management strategies to cope with the cognitive challenges and associated anxiety that often accompanies ECT. METHODS: This pilot study used a pretest-posttest de

Applying a web-based self-help intervention for bulimia nervosa in routine care: Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) experience persistent episodes of binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behavior associated with impaired physical and mental health. Despite the existence of effective treatments, many individuals with BN remain untreated, leading to a high burden and an increased risk of chronicity. Web-based interventions may help facilitate access to evidence-based treatments for BN by reducing barriers to the health care system. METHODS: The present study will investigate the effectiveness of a web-based self-help intervention for BN in a two-armed

Comparing the outcomes of the technology-enhanced learning of sectional anatomy with and without preceding demonstrations: A study about the worked-example effect in anatomy education.

The examination of anatomical cross-sections can facilitate the understanding of spatial and clinical anatomy. Visualization technologies, with dynamic and interactive displays, can be used to learn sectional anatomy in a mostly self-directed manner. Nevertheless, this study hypothesized that the technology-enhanced learning of sectional anatomy is improved when initiated with explicit anatomical demonstrations-worked examples, as defined in Cognitive Load Theory (CLT) and Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (CTML). Two learning experiments were conducted with Year 1 (N = 110) and Year 2 (
