Hypertension screening, awareness, treatment, and control in India: A nationally representative cross-sectional study among individuals aged 15 to 49 years.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on where in the hypertension care process individuals are lost to care, and how this varies among states and population groups in a country as large as India, is essential for the design of targeted interventions and to monitor progress. Yet, to our knowledge, there has not yet been a nationally representative analysis of the proportion of adults who reach each step of the hypertension care process in India. This study aimed to determine (i) the proportion of adults with hypertension who have been screened, are aware of their diagnosis, take antihypertensive treatment, and

Prescription Trends of Biologic DMARDs in Treating Rheumatologic Diseases: Changes of Medication Availability in COVID-19.

Biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) are very effective in treating rheumatic diseases with a good patient tolerance. However, high cost and individualistic approach requires dedication of the physician. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the prescription of biologic DMARDs in rheumatology at the University Hospital of Split. The data collection was conducted through an archive search in the Outpatient Clinic for Rheumatology in the University Hospital of Split, Split, Croatia. The search included the period before and af

Impact of Propofol Exposure on Neurocognitive Outcomes in Children With High-Risk B ALL: A Children's Oncology Group Study.

PURPOSE: Many children treated for ALL develop long-term neurocognitive impairments. Increased risk of these impairments is associated with treatment and demographic factors. Exposure to anesthesia is an additional possible risk factor. This study evaluated the impact of cumulative exposure to anesthesia on neurocognitive outcomes among a multicenter cohort of children with ALL. METHODS: This study was embedded in AALL1131, a Children's Oncology Group phase III trial for patients with high-risk B-ALL. In consenting patients age 6-12 years, prospective uniform assessments of neurocognitive fun

[The Lives and Diseases of Females during the Latter Half of the Joseon Dynasty as Reconstructed with Cases in Yeoksi Manpil (Stray Notes with Experienced Tests)].

Through the cases of approximately 80 females in the case records of traditional physician Yi Sugwi (1664-1740?), the present study divided and reclassified the lives and diseases of females during the latter half of the Joseon Dynasty into childhood, obstetrics- and gynecology-related problems in adulthood, other diseases in adulthood, and old age and analyzed them. According to the results, female children were treated less preciously than were male children so that treatments by traditional physicians were sought out less when they were ill than in the case of male children, and acute infec

Spermatogenesis in mammals: proteomic insights.

Spermatogenesis is a highly sophisticated process involved in the transmission of genetic heritage. It includes halving ploidy, repackaging of the chromatin for transport, and the equipment of developing spermatids and eventually spermatozoa with the advanced apparatus (e.g., tightly packed mitochondrial sheat in the mid piece, elongating of the tail, reduction of cytoplasmic volume) to elicit motility once they reach the epididymis. Mammalian spermatogenesis is divided into three phases. In the first the primitive germ cells or spermatogonia undergo a series of mitotic divisions. In the secon

Factors associated with handgrip strength across the life course: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Muscle strength is essential for healthy ageing. Handgrip strength (HGS) has been recommended by expert bodies as the preferred measure of muscle strength, in addition to being considered a strong predictor of overall health. Cross-sectional studies have shown several potential factors associated with HGS, but a systematic review of factors predicting HGS over time has not previously been conducted. The aim of this study is to systematically review the literature on the factors associated with adult HGS [at follow-up(s) or its rate of change] across the life course. METHODS: Searc

Biological Aging and Periodontal Disease: Analysis of NHANES (2001-2002).

INTRODUCTION: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by multiple potential contributing factors such as bacterial biofilm infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth and environmental determinants and a dysregulated host response for modifying and resolving the inflammation. Because periodontal disease is a major public health concern with substantial increases in the prevalence and severity in aging populations, previous studies of periodontitis tended to approach the disease as an age-associated outcome across the life span. However, few investigations have considered that

Metal artifact reduction sequence MRI in hip periprosthetic joint infection management : a noninvasive reference for infection control before two-stage reimplantation.

AIMS: There is currently no validated noninvasive method to determine infection control prior to prosthesis reimplantation during the two-stage revision process for hip periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) after total hip arthroplasty (THA). This prospective study investigates whether metal artifact reduction sequence (MARS) MRI can serve as a diagnostic reference for infection control before second-stage revision surgery by analyzing artifact-reduced MRIs in patients with hip PJI prior to reimplantation. METHODS: Patients with hip PJI after THA who entered the two-stage revision process bet

Prevalence and radiographic features of atlantoaxial dislocation in adult patients with Kashin-Beck disease.

PURPOSE: Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) is an endemic osteoarthropathy affecting the epiphyseal growth plate of multiple joints in young and adolescent patients. Previous studies have focused on the visible deformed extremities instead of the spinal radiological features, especially the atlantoaxial joint. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and radiographic features of atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) in adult patients with KBD. METHODS: This study was conducted on KBD patients in three typical endemic counties between October 2017 and November 2019. The patients were evaluated by

Community-based implementation and effectiveness in a randomized trial of a risk reduction intervention for HIV-serodiscordant couples: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to disproportionately affect African American communities in the US, particularly those located in urban areas. Despite the fact that HIV is often transmitted from one sexual partner to another, most HIV prevention interventions have focused only on individuals, rather than couples. This five-year study investigates community-based implementation, effectiveness, and sustainability of 'Eban II,' an evidence-based risk reduction intervention for African-American heterosexual, serodiscordant couples. METHODS/DESIGN: This hybrid implementation/effective

5α-dihydrotestosterone upregulates interferon signaling and limits osteoclast differentiation during inflammatory state.

PURPOSE: Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by inflammatory erosions and increased prevalence in females. Androgen, the dominant sex hormone in males, is protective against bone loss. Here, we investigated the cellular targets of androgen and hypothesized that androgen negatively regulates TNFα-driven osteoclastogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bone marrow-derived cells from a C57BL/6J mouse femur and tibia were plated with 10-9M of 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) or vehicle then collected for flow cytometry and flow sorting. Osteoclast precursors (OCPs), myeloid-like CD11b+Gr-1- cells, were g

Left parietal structural connectivity mediates typical and atypical language laterality in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: Subjects with left temporal lobe epilepsy may either show altered hemispheric language lateralization or retain typical, left lateralization. Examining the integrity of white matter pathways involved in the adaptation or maintenance of language lateralization in these patients could have important clinical implications for preserving or potentiating compensatory language mechanisms. METHODS: We combined task functional magnetic resonance imaging and structural diffusion metrics to determine the dependency of lobe-based language laterality on white matter integrity in healthy partic

Developing a Female Sex Worker-Led Program to Improve the Uptake of Oral Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis in South Africa: An Intervention Mapping Study.

In 2016, the South African government approved free oral PrEP distribution among high-risk groups like female sex workers (FSWs) to reduce new HIV infections. Despite the availability, unique barriers exist that challenge PrEP persistence, including limited knowledge, side effects, stigma, and mobility that hinder adherence. As such, engaging FSWs in the design of an FSW-led intervention program is crucial to promote PrEP uptake, adherence, and retention. Processes of an intervention mapping approach were applied to design and develop the program in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. A needs analysi

The MHC Class II Antigen-Processing and Presentation Pathway Is Dysregulated in Type 1 Diabetes.

Peptide loading of MHC class II (MHCII) molecules is facilitated by HLA-DM (DM), which catalyzes CLIP release, stabilizes empty MHCII, and edits the MHCII-bound peptide repertoire. HLA-DO (DO) binds to DM and modulates its activity, resulting in an altered set of peptides presented at the cell surface. MHCII-peptide presentation in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is abnormal, leading to a breakdown in tolerance; however, no direct measurement of the MHCII pathway activity in T1D patients has been performed. In this study, we measured MHCII Ag-processing pathway activity in humans by det

[Lack of GAGA protein in Trl mutants causes massive cell death in Drosophila spermatogenesis and oogenesis].

Drosophila protein GAGA (GAF) is a factor of epigenetic transcription regulation of a large group of genes with a wide variety of cellular functions. GAF is encoded by the Trithorax-like (Trl) gene, which is important for the formation of various organs and tissues at all stages of ontogenesis. In our previous works, we showed that this protein is necessary for the development of the reproductive system, both in males and females of Drosophila. Decreased expression of the Trl gene led to multiple disorders of spermatogenesis and oogenesis. One of the significant disorders was associated with m

Limbic system activation is affected by prenatal predator exposure and postnatal environmental enrichment and further moderated by dam and sex.

Epilepsy is a relatively common and chronic neurological condition, affecting 1-2% of the population. However, understanding of the underlying pathophysiology remains incomplete. To identify potential factors in the early environment that may increase the risk for experiencing seizures, maternal stress and environmental enrichment (EE) were utilized. Pregnant Long-Evans rats were exposed to an ethologically relevant predator stress (PS) and maternal glucocorticoid (GC) response was assessed across the exposure period. At birth, litters were divided into standard care (SC) and EE groups until p
