Drug resistance in African trypanosomes has been studied for almost a hundred years. BACKGROUND: The pediatric ICU (PICU) is a specialized area where critically sick children are managed. The mortality rates in PICUs are higher in developing countries as compared to developed nations. Many of these deaths could be prevented if very sick children were identified soon after they arrived at the health facility. Hematological indices like platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been frequently used in adults as indicators of mortality. Acute infections are associated with a set of stereotypic behavioral responses, including anorexia, lethargy, and social withdrawal. This paper describes a patient who is suffering from PTSD with elements of hypochondria, panic attacks and episodes of depression in comorbidity with kidney stones. Kidney stones provoked egzacerbation of psychiatric symptoms. Kidney stones and frustration about them have taken part of provoking factor, the last drop, which led to regression of otherwise precarious, but compensated patient's mental functioning which resulted in development of psychiatric symptoms.

The aim of this article is to suggest that hostile behavior in elderly patients is often caused by a reversible mood disorder rather than by a personality disorder or dementia, even if these two last diagnoses are already well established. Sedatives, often prescribed for hostile behavior, can induce confusion, falls, and bedridden states, and can actually increase the rate of mortality. The mood disorder can be a hostile agitated depression or a mixed affective state. The hypothesis of a mood disorder calls for an antidepressant trial, possibly combined with a mood stabilizer.
