Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at high risk for sleep disturbances, but the mechanism underlying the association between sleep disturbances and ASD core symptoms is largely unknown. This study examined the relationship between sleep disturbances and ASD core symptoms, and the mediating role of gaze patterns during the facial emotion recognition (FER) task. The study included 57 children with ASD and 59 age- and intelligence-matched typically developing (TD) controls aged 3-7 years. Parents reported their children's sleep disturbances and ASD core symptoms using the Children's

The purpose of this systematic review was to examine critically the literature that addresses the association between sleep disturbance and falls. Electronic databases OVID MEDLINE, PubMed, and CINAHL were searched using MeSH terms "sleep" and "accidental falls." Search limits included adults, humans, and English. The articles selected for the final sample were assessed for methodological quality. Eleven key attributes of sleep disturbance were extracted. The search yielded 177 articles from OVID MEDLINE, 124 from PubMed, and 46 from CINAHL. The final sample included 42 papers. The mean method

Sleep disturbances (SD) accompany many neurodevelopmental disorders, suggesting SD is a transdiagnostic process that can account for behavioral deficits and influence underlying neuropathogenesis. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) comprises a complex set of neurodevelopmental conditions characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Diagnosis of ASD is based primarily on behavioral criteria, and there are no drugs that target core symptoms. Among the co-occurring conditions associated with ASD, SD are one of the most prevalent. SD often ari

OBJECTIVE: To observe the effects of penetrating technique of scalp acupuncture on emotion, sleep and function development in children of autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
METHODS: A total of 60 SAD children aged 3 to 6 years were randomized in a control group (music education rehabilitation,n=30) and an observation group (penetrating technique of scalp acupuncture + music education rehabilitation,n=30). In the two groups, the treatment for 3 months was as 1 course, and 2 courses of treatment were required. Before and after treatment, the changes were observed in childhood autism rating scale (

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to examine the effectiveness of a newly developed therapeutic method focusing on affective and sensory processes in the treatment of sleep problems in outpatients with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), called the 'Affective and Sensory Psychotherapy Module' (ASPM).
METHOD: A randomised controlled trial was conducted, there were 60 outpatient participants. The Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item Scale (GAD-7) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used at baseline, post-treatment, and 3 month follow-up.
RESULTS: There were no significant differenc

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep problems are a core feature of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to find a robust objective measure for the sleep disturbance in patients having PTSD.
METHODS: The current study assessed EEG power across a wide frequency range and multiple scalp locations, in matched trauma-exposed individuals with and without PTSD, during rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep. In addition, a full polysomnographical evaluation was performed, including sleep staging and assessment of respiratory function, limb movements, and heart rate. The occ

Insufficient sleep syndrome (ISS) and narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) both feature excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), yet they differ in etiology and nighttime sleep architecture. We compared clinical characteristics, video-polysomnography (v-PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), and actigraphy in ISS and NT1, to better define ISS and differentiate the two disorders. We retrospectively screened patients from a Sleep Medicine Unit who had a confirmed diagnosis of ISS (n = 23) or NT1 (n = 9) and underwent v-PSG, MSLT, and actigraphy. All patients were drug-free, and those with comorbid sleep disord

The anatomical states of the oral cavity and pharynx during mouth breathing in children with adenoid hypertrophy and in adults confirmed the speculation that mouth breathing is disadvantageous compared with nose breathing. In addition, comparison of the anatomical state between wakefulness and sleep in normal adults showed slight depression of the tongue root and slight narrowing of the oropharynx and hypopharynx during sleep. Obstructive sleep-disordered breathing occurs due to a variety of factors, such as paranasal sinus disease, tonsil and adenoid hypertrophy, hypertrophy and morphological

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to study the prevalence of sleep disturbances in patients with generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and to identify the factors related to sleep disturbances.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of factors associated with sleep disturbances and a meta-analysis of the pooled prevalence of sleep disturbances in GAD patients. A box-score method was employed to quantify the relationships between the identified factors associated with sleep disturbances and GAD. Cochran's Q-test and I2 statistics were used to evaluate the heterogeneity of the studies. We employed a random-e

Several movement disorders may occur during nocturnal rest disrupting sleep. A part of these complaints is characterized by relatively simple, non-purposeful and usually stereotyped movements. The last version of the International Classification of Sleep Disorders includes these clinical conditions (i.e. restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, sleep-related leg cramps, sleep-related bruxism and sleep-related rhythmic movement disorder) under the category entitled sleep-related movement disorders. Moreover, apparently physiological movements (e.g. alternating leg muscle activat

The article summarizes neuroimaging studies carried out during the last 2 decades to investigate the mechanisms underlying sleep dysfunction in Parkinson's and other synucleinopathies. Rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder and excessive daytime sleepiness are discussed, as they are the most frequently investigated.

UNLABELLED: Scientific evidence that acute, posttrauma sleep disturbances (eg, nightmares and insomnia) can contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of trauma-induced disorders is compelling. Sleep disturbances precipitating from trauma are uniquely predictive of daytime posttrauma symptom occurrence and severity, as well as subsequent onset of mental health disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder. Conversely, adequate sleep during the acute posttrauma period is associated with reduced likelihood of adverse mental health outcomes. These findings, which are broadly consistent wi

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are common comorbidities of excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS). Sleep-related breathing disorders (SBD) and central disorders of hypersomnolence (like narcolepsy [NA]) are the most frequent causes of EDS. This study aimed to evaluate mood disorders in NA patients compared to the subjects with EDS due to SBD (SBD-EDS).
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis, subjects with NA and SBD-EDS were compared. All subjects underwent overnight polysomnography. NA patients underwent also multiple sleep latency test. Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality
