Application of Concomitant Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and Cognitive Behavioral-Oriented Training (CBT) for Pragmatic Skills Improvement in Young Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Preliminary Data from a Pilot Study.

Objectives: Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit difficulties in the social use of language, regardless of age, cognitive abilities, and symptom severity. The left Broca's area and adjacent cortex are crucial for socio-pragmatic language, particularly in retrieving and integrating context-dependent words. Neuroimaging studies in ASD have shown hypoactivation of the Broca's area and an aberrant pattern of functional connectivity between language-related regions, suggesting their potential involvement in socio-communicative deficits. Given the potential of tDCS to modulate bra

NETfacts: a community intervention integrating trauma treatment at the individual and collective level.

The aim of this article is to present a research-based rationale for NETfacts, a newly developed integrated approach at the individual and the community level in order to mitigate the mental and social sequelae of war and crisis. To this end, we provide a selective review of relevant literature from neuroscience, clinical psychology, and social science. In psychotraumatology, individual avoidance describes the effort to prevent exposure to trauma reminders. Among patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), this becomes pathological, exacerbating distress and preventing recovery. This

Radically Open-Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Disorders of Over-Control: Signaling Matters.

Radically Open-Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is a transdiagnostic treatment designed to address a spectrum of difficult-to-treat disorders sharing similar phenotypic and genotypic features associated with maladaptive over-control-such as anorexia nervosa, chronic depression, and obsessive compulsive personality disorder. Over-control has been linked to social isolation, aloof and distant relationships, cognitive rigidity, high detailedfocused processing, risk aversion, strong needs for structure, inhibited emotional expression, and hyper-perfectionism. While resting on the dialectical

GABA and glutamate measurements in temporal cortex of autistic children.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder and presents with challenges in social communication. A hypothesized underlying contributing mechanism is the imbalance in excitation and inhibition (E/I), partly influenced by the levels of excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate (Glu) and inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Although many have reported the levels of GABA and Glu in the brain, only a few reports address the temporal cortex and then only with a small sample of autistic children, and often only in one hemisphere. We used a macromolecul

Obstacles to treatment retention in opioid use disorder: An international substance use disorder treatment worker survey.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment retention is associated with better outcomes and reduced risk amongst people experiencing opioid use disorder (OUD). Despite this, treatment retention remains low amongst this population. METHODS: We carried out an international cross-sectional survey of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment service workers. We aimed to understand the barriers to treatment retention in the context of OUD from the provider perspective, identify differences in response preference between professional groups, and describe regional differences in treatment provision. RESULTS: We report d

Traditional Chinese medicine intervention for autism spectrum disorders: A protocol for systematic review and network meta-analysis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social communication, social interaction, and restrictive or repetitive behaviors. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in the clinical management of ASD, especially in mainland China, where studies have shown promising efficacy. However, this remains to be further explored and clarified. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of conventional treatment-based TCM interventions for ASD. METHOD: The study will be conducted from January

Sex differences in early language delay and in developmental language disorder.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition, occurring in about 3% to 7% of preschoolers, that can impair communication and negatively impact educational and social attainments, in spite of adequate neurological, cognitive, emotional, social development, and educational opportunities for language learning. Significant risk factors for DLD are male sex, familial history of early language delay, low parental education, and various perinatal factors. A strong sex effect with a higher prevalence of language delay and DLD in males than in females has been consistently re

Immune regulation of neurodevelopment at the mother-foetus interface: the case of autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by deficits in social communication and stereotypical behaviours. ASD's aetiology remains mostly unclear, because of a complex interaction between genetic and environmental factors. Recently, a strong consensus has developed around ASD's immune-mediated pathophysiology, which is the subject of this review. For many years, neuroimmunological studies tried to understand ASD as a prototypical antibody- or cell-mediated disease. Other findings indicated the importance of autoimmune mechanisms such as familial and individual au

Resveratrol Prevents Cellular and Behavioral Sensory Alterations in the Animal Model of Autism Induced by Valproic Acid.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by impairments in both social communication and interaction and repetitive or stereotyped behaviors. Although its etiology remains unknown, genetic and environmental risk factors have been associated with this disorder, including the exposure to valproic acid (VPA) during pregnancy. Resveratrol (RSV) is an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant molecule known to prevent social impairments in the VPA animal model of autism. This study aimed to analyze the effects of prenatal exposure to VPA, as well as possible preventive effects of RSV, on sensory beh

Freiburg Questionnaire of linguistic pragmatics (FQLP): psychometric properties based on a psychiatric sample.

BACKGROUND: Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is an autism spectrum disorder that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. Difficulties with respect to pragmatic speech, reading emotional and social cues, differentiating between fact and fiction, and taking into account the influence of context on a statement are commonly described features. However, hitherto established questionnaires did not focus on these symptoms. METHODS: In this study we present a short (11 questions) question

The Perceived Impact of Sequential Intercept Mapping on Communities Collaborating to Address Adults with Mental Illness in the Criminal Justice System.

Sequential intercept mapping is an approach to address the overrepresentation of adults with mental illness in the criminal justice system. This approach follows the sequential intercept model, a nationally recognized framework conceptualizing the linear movement of people with mental illness through the criminal justice system. During the sequential intercept mapping process, community stakeholders identify service and policy gaps and opportunities to address the needs of this target population. This qualitative study describes the perceived impact of sequential intercept mapping among commun

Evaluation of a Pilot Intervention to Reduce Mental Health and Addiction Stigma in Primary Care Settings.

Healthcare environments are not exempt from the impact of stigma against mental illness and addiction, which contributes to barriers to client access and appropriate treatment. To address this concern, healthcare organizations have a growing interest in mental illness and addiction anti-stigma anti-discrimination programming as part of their staff-wide professional development. Though standard interventions demonstrate effectiveness in the short and mid-term, the evidence for long-term change is inconclusive. A flexible, innovative intervention was developed in collaboration with community hea

Commentary on special section on "bidirectional parent-child relationships": the continuing evolution of dynamic, transactional models of parenting and youth behavior problems.

Creative and methodologically sophisticated longitudinal research on bidirectionality in parenting and child behavior can shed important new light on the dynamics of behavior-problem development. The articles assembled for this Special Section are at the forefront of efforts aimed at tracing the interplay of parenting behavior and child and adolescent adjustment problems over time. In this commentary, we provide a brief overview of thinking and research on bidirectionality and then highlight key themes and findings reported in these articles. We describe some of the challenges in research on b

Contingency management treatments: Reinforcing abstinence versus adherence with goal-related activities.

Contingency management (CM) interventions usually reinforce submission of drug-negative specimens, but they can also reinforce adherence with goal-related activities. This study compared the efficacy of the 2 approaches. Substance-abusing outpatients (N = 131) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 12-week treatments: standard treatment (ST), ST with CM for submitting negative urine toxicology screens, or ST with CM for completing goal-related activities. CM patients remained in treatment longer and achieved more abstinence than ST patients, but the CM condition that reinforced submission of negativ

Client well-being in drug treatment: a social ecological analysis.

A social ecological model of well-being, defined as subjective affirmation by clients regarding treatment experiences, was tested using county demographic data and responses of clients and therapeutic staff in community drug treatment programs registered in the State of Ohio. Multivariate analyses were conducted of a trilogy of variable constellations [Client Background, Therapeutic Proficiency, and Community Development] in relation to Client Well-Being. Findings upheld the origins of well-being in social environments and supported an evaluative focus on client experience in human service org

Retention in outpatient drug free treatment clinics.

This study examined time in treatment and the percentage of clients who quit or were expelled from drug treatment clinics as dependent measures in a general model including socioecological aspects of the clinic neighborhood environment, the clinic structure (attributes, e.g., size, and services and staffing), and the client composition of the clinic (sociodemographic and deviance). In this study the clinic was the unit of analysis. The data were analyzed by means of path analysis, for (1) drug free outpatient, nonopiate orientation (DFO-N) and (2) drug free outpatient, opiate orientation (DFO-

The comorbidity between autism spectrum disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder is mediated by brooding rumination.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by social communication difficulties and restricted repetitive behaviors. Individuals with autism spectrum disorder are often diagnosed with other psychiatric conditions, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and depression. However, research on post-traumatic stress disorder among individuals with autism spectrum disorder is scarce. Nonetheless, studies have shown that those with autism spectrum disorder may face an increased risk of exposure to traumatic events. Separate lines of research in autis

Pain, post-traumatic stress, and sleep disturbance in older adults with knee osteoarthritis: a path analysis of the mediating effect of depression and social support.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is a prevalent and debilitating comorbidity in older patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), significantly impacting their quality of life. While pain is a known contributor, the complex interplay between physical symptoms, psychological distress, and social factors remains inadequately understood. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality and to elucidate the intricate pathways through which pain, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSD), and social support influence sleep among community-dwelling older KOA patients. METHODS: A multi-stage
