[Medicolegal litigation in cases of occupational lung disease: Some practical tips].

Recognition and compensation for occupational diseases (OD) is based on the principle of presumption of occupational origin, provided that the disease meets the medical and administrative condition detailed in an OD table appended to the French social security code. A complementary system calling upon a regional committee for recognition of respiratory diseases (CRRMP, in French) attends to cases in which the medical or administrative conditions pertaining to the disease are not fulfilled. Decisions of health insurance funds may be appealed, by employer and employee alike, within the statutory

Ontogeny of rake mark scarring on common dolphins (Delphinus delphis): insights to aggression and affiliation?

Aggressive and affiliative interactions shape resource allocation, social structure and reproduction in social species. In delphinids, rake marks (parallel scars from tooth raking) indicate social interactions. When examined alongside ontogeny, demographic traits and scar position, rake marks can inform social dynamics. We assessed rake marks on common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in Aotearoa New Zealand (2006-2024; n = 102) during post-mortem examinations to explore drivers of social behaviour. Using a zero-inflated generalized linear mixed model, we assessed rake mark occurrence (probability

Impact of social exclusion on empathy in women with borderline personality disorder.

Unstable interpersonal relationships and fear of abandonment are core symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD) that often intensify during stress. Psychosocial stress, which includes components of social exclusion and increases cortisol secretion, enhances emotional empathy in healthy individuals. Women with BPD, on the contrary, react with reduced emotional empathy. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of perceived social exclusion without accompanying cortisol increase on empathy in women with BPD and healthy women. To induce social exclusion, we randomized 98

Living with coeliac disease: a grounded theory study.

BACKGROUND: Coeliac disease can be controlled only through adherence to a gluten-free diet. This diet is highly restrictive and can be challenging to maintain. It has been linked with elevated levels of psychological distress, including depression, anxiety and social phobia. METHODS: Narratives on living with coeliac disease were written by 130 adult members of Coeliac UK (mean age 52.7 years; mean time since diagnosis 10.2 years; 67% sample female; 28% male). Qualitative analysis using grounded theory methods identified five key categories: living with widespread ignorance; social invisibili

Communication and Psychosocial Functioning in Children With Tourette Syndrome: Parent-Reported Measures.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies indicate that a subset of children with Tourette syndrome (TS) experiences communication difficulties; however, the specific characteristics of these challenges remain underexplored. AIMS: This study aimed to (1) quantify the proportion of children with TS within a North American cohort exhibiting communication challenges as assessed by a standardized parent questionnaire, (2) determine how many children with parent-reported communication challenges had been diagnosed with a communication disorder, (3) examine the relationship between parent-reported co-occurring

Social determinants of health in multiple sclerosis.

Social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. Evidence indicates that health behaviours, comorbidities and disease-modifying therapies all contribute to multiple sclerosis (MS) outcomes; however, our knowledge of the effects of social determinants - that is, the 'risks of risks' - on health has not yet changed our approach to MS. Assessing and addressing social determinants of health could fundamentally improve health and health care in MS; this approach has al

From models to mechanisms: odorant communication as a key determinant of social behavior in rodents during illness-associated states.

Pheromones and other social odor cues convey rich information among rodents. Social investigation is described as a key element in olfactory communication, which involves motivated approaches to conspecifics and other socially relevant stimuli. This behavior is activated by the detection of social cues to gather information about conspecifics for subsequent strategies such as avoidance or further approach, thereby determining the extent and nature of physical contact that ensues. This feature indicates a useful way for describing the process of social communication in distance-based manner. In

Preserved access and processing of social knowledge in a patient with acquired sociopathy due to ventromedial frontal damage.

Acquired damage to ventromedial frontal cortices produces abnormalities of decision-making that are especially marked in the realm of social conduct. The pathogenesis of this disorder remains unexplained. One possible mechanism posits that patients with lesions of ventromedial frontal cortices, while retaining the ability to recognize the entities and events that compose social situations, lose the ability to generate an appropriate array of response options to social stimuli, and to conceptualize the future consequences of choosing a particular option. To explore the validity of this mechanis

Social frailty as social aspects of frailty: Research, practical activities, and prospects.

With the topical focus on the prevention of and countermeasures for frailty, scattered studies have subdivided its social elements and aspects as "social frailty." While the concepts and definition of "social frailty" are yet to be established, the purpose of using the term is to capture the attention of professionals using the social aspects of frailty to support older adults. The goal is to increase healthy life expectancy by recognizing that social factors are unlikely to pose a risk of functional decline in isolation, but may increase such a decline when combined with other factors. At fea

Social comparison threat and coping: affective, cognitive and behavioral outcomes in response to false performance-related feedback.

BACKGROUND: Social comparisons shape our behavior. The general comparative processing model (gComp) suggests that evaluating one's attributes against salient upward social standards elicits motivational appraisal ranging from threat to challenge, each typically associated with corresponding pessimistic or optimistic coping responses. This, in turn, manifests in specific affective, cognitive, and behavioral responses. To our knowledge, this is the first study to provide an initial experimental test of gComp assumptions. METHODS: Participants completed a 2-back task framed as indicative of acad

Reclaiming time as a fundamental determinant of health equity.

Health is widely recognized as shaped by social and structural conditions, yet time remains largely absent from dominant public health frameworks. This paper brings together sociological and epidemiological perspectives to argue that time is a fundamental dimension of health that has been insufficiently articulated. Rather than proposing a new determinant, it reframes time as an essential condition through which social inequalities are produced and experienced. In public health research, time is most often treated as a technical parameter, such as duration or life course stage, obscuring how i

Does social distancing impact pediatric upper airway infections? An observational controlled study and a brief literature review.

PURPOSE: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has reduced social interaction even among children. The objective of the study was to assess the role of social distancing in the course of common pediatric upper airway recurrent diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged ≤14 years with at least one ENT-related clinical condition were retrospectively recruited. All patients had two outpatient evaluations in the same period (April - September): the control group had the first evaluation in 2018 and second in 2019, whereas the case group had the first evaluation in 2019 and second in 2020. The impact of the social context on the development of secondary hyperalgesia: an experimental study.

Social support has been shown to reduce pain ratings and physiological responses to acute pain stimuli. Furthermore, this relationship is moderated by adult attachment styles. However, these effects have not been characterized in experimentally induced symptoms of chronic pain, such as secondary hyperalgesia (SH) which is characterized by an increased sensitivity of the skin surrounding an injury. We aimed to examine whether social support by handholding from a romantic partner can attenuate the development of experimentally induced SH. Thirty-seven women, along with their partners, participat

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide promotes reward seeking behavior in socially isolated rats.

Reward deficit, expressed as anhedonia, is one of the major symptoms associated with neuropsychiatric disorders, but the underlying maladaptations have not been understood. Herein, we test the hypothesis that the neuropeptide cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) may participate in the process. The study is justified since the peptide is a major player in inducing satiety and also processing of reward. The rats were socially isolated to induce reward deficit and conditioned to self-stimulate via an electrode in lateral hypothalamus (LH)-medial forebrain bundle (MFB) region. Comp

Eye movement assessment in individuals with social phobia: differential usefulness for varying presentation times?

Visual dot probe tasks are used to examine attentional biases towards threat faces in social phobia. Based on eye movement assessments, short presentation times of stimuli have been proposed to investigate initial attentional processes. However, it remains unclear if eye movements contribute to anxiety related biases as measured in dot probe tasks when presentation times below 200 ms are used. In this study the electrooculogram (EOG) was recorded in a sample of 17 participants with social phobia and 13 controls performing a visual dot probe task in two presentation time conditions. In the 175

Where Are All the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Social Workers?

Pediatric and adolescent gynecology (PAG) is a growing specialty, but despite the complexity of many patients' experiences, few hospitals employ dedicated social workers trained to support these patients and their families. This is true despite the fact that PAG providers routinely care for individuals with multiple conditions where patients and families could benefit from support around long-term implications for reproductive health and fertility; surgical decision making; counseling in the wake of sexual trauma; comprehensive sex education and counseling; and referrals to other social servic

Light disrupts social memory via a retina-to-supraoptic nucleus circuit.

The formation of social memory between individuals of the opposite sex is crucial for expanding mating options or establishing monogamous pair bonding. A specialized neuronal circuit that regulates social memory could enhance an individual's mating opportunities and provide a parallel pathway for computing social behaviors. While the influence of light exposure on various forms of memory, such as fear and object memory, has been studied, its modulation of social recognition memory remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that acute exposure to light impairs social recognition memory (SRM) in mice

Severely stigmatised skin neglected tropical diseases: a protocol for social science engagement.

More than one billion people are affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and many of these diseases are preventable. While the grouping of these conditions as NTDs has generated vast mapping, mass drug administration and surveillance programmes, there is growing evidence of gaps and weaknesses in purely biomedical approaches, and the need for responses that also recognise the social determinants of health. In order to unpack the social and political determinants of NTDs, it is important to view the problem from a social science perspective. Given this background, the Social Sciences for

Social Relationships and Suicidal Ideation Among the Elderly Who Live Alone in Republic of Korea: A Logistic Model.

With population aging and change in family structure, the number of the elderly who live alone is rapidly increasing in Korea. The aim of this study was to explore the association between social relationships-especially newly formed formal social relationships (FSRs)-and suicidal ideation among Korean elderly who live alone. The elderly who live alone (N = 2509) from the 2014 Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Older Koreans were analyzed using logistic regression. This study found that informal social relationships (ISRs) (eg, children, friends and neighbors) of the elderly who l

Social determinants of mental health: the missing dimensions of mental health nursing?

In this paper we explore how aspects of the social world may be linked to mental health and psychiatric morbidity and propose that conditions should be created which allow individuals and communities greater opportunities for self-care and self-management. Specifically the focus is on social connections, disability and homelessness and work stress. There is a clear policy direction pursued by many national governments and international organizations such as the World Bank to build healthy communities. The environment as it relates to health and well-being can be thought of in terms of physical
