A phenomenological analysis of relapse among adults with substance abuse.

Relapses from substance usage continue to be a major global public health concern. Many individuals find it difficult to sustain long-term recovery, often cycling between phases of recovery and relapse, even with improvements in treatments. This study employs a center-based phenomenological design to examine the experiences of adults who relapse from substance dependence. For in-depth interviews, nine patients were chosen. An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to analyze the data. The results revealed that a complex interplay of personal and environmental factors influence

Perceived support from AI chatbots and loneliness among higher vocational college students: a short-term three-wave study of social interaction anxiety and perceived social support.

Generative artificial intelligence and AI companion tools are increasingly entering higher vocational college students' learning, emotion regulation, and everyday social communication contexts. This study defines perceived support from AI chatbots as students' subjective experience of receiving support while using AI chat tools, rather than objective social support from real interpersonal sources. A short-term three-wave design was used. Students were recruited through class WeChat groups from four higher vocational colleges in Jiangxi and Guangdong provinces, China, during the spring semester

Cooperation beyond the dyad: the emergence and stability of animal societies.

Cooperation is a fundamental driver of social evolution, yet we still lack an integrated framework explaining how interactions among individuals scale up to the formation and long-term stability of animal societies. Although major advances have been made, research has often focused on a narrow set of model taxa and on individual mechanisms in isolation, hindering a comparative understanding across species and theoretical approaches. In this review, we synthesise theoretical and empirical work to link the processes that initiate group living with those that sustain cooperation once groups are e

How Do Men Who Post Publicly on Social Media Author Themselves and Their Experiences of Crohn's Disease? A Dialogical Analysis of Three Cases.

Despite distinct sex- and gender-related differences in the presentation and manifestation of Crohn's disease (CD), little research to date has considered men's particular experiences. Whilst hegemonic masculine ideals have been reported to negatively impact men's mental and physical health, increasingly research has emphasized that men engage in a diverse range of practices, including those beneficial to health. One such practice is posting about their illness experiences on social media. The interactive nature of posting online means that a dialogical approach, based on a relational epistemo

Relationship between trust in neighbors and regional brain volumes in a population-based study.

Trust is a fundamental part of human interpersonal relationships, and among other complex factors it is shown to be linked with demographic characteristics and specific regions of the brain. The authors utilized a large, community-based database gathered from the Dallas Heart Study to determine specific brain regions associated with an individual's trust in neighbors. A trust questionnaire was taken and regional brain volumes were determined from structural magnetic resonance imaging. Two analyses using logistic regressions in a training set and validation set were performed to investigate the

Internalized transphobia and psychological distress among transgender and gender non-confirming emerging adults: The mediating roles of social support and gender identity disclosure.

Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals encounter distinct challenges that can significantly impact their psychological well-being. Among these challenges, internalized transphobia -where individuals internalize societal stigma related to their gender identity-emerges as a critical stressor potentially exacerbating psychological distress. This study aims to explore these mechanisms by examining how social support and gender identity disclosure indirectly affect the relationship between internalized transphobia and psychological distress among TGNC emerging adults. Data for thi

Behavioral and functional connectivity basis for peer-influenced bystander participation in bullying.

Recent studies have shown that the reactions of bystanders who witness bullying significantly affect whether the bullying persists. However, the underlying behavioral and neural mechanisms that determine a peer-influenced bystander's participation in bullying remain largely unknown. Here, we designed a new 'catch-ball' task where four players choose to throw a sequence of normal or strong (aggressive) balls in turn and examined whether the players (n = 43) participated in other players' bullying. We analyzed behaviors with a computational model that quantifies the tendencies of a participant's
