Sex Moderates Relationships Between Alcohol Use Disorder, Brain Structure, and Perceived Emotional Support in Young Adults.

OBJECTIVES: Social support is associated with myriad health benefits, including recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD). Understanding its neural features may aid in intervention development. However, most neuroimaging studies investigating social support do not consider potential neuroanatomical differences related to sex and AUD, even though both factors have been related to social support. This study investigated neuroanatomical correlates of perceived emotional and instrumental support as a function of sex and lifetime AUD using Human Connectome Project data. METHODS: T1-weighted magneti

Epigenetic signatures of social anxiety, panic disorders and stress experiences: Insights from genome-wide DNA methylation risk scores.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and panic disorder (PD) are prevalent anxiety disorders characterized by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors. Both disorders share overlapping features and often coexist, despite displaying distinct characteristics. Childhood life adversity, overall stressful life events, and genetic factors contribute to the development of these disorders. DNA methylation, an epigenetic modification, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of these diseases. In this study, we investigated whether whole-genome DNA methylation risk scores (MRSs) for SAD risk, s

Review of Major Social Determinants of Health in Schizophrenia-Spectrum Disorders: II. Assessments.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social determinants of health (SDoHs) impact the development and course of schizophrenia-spectrum psychotic disorders (SSPDs). Yet, we found no published scholarly reviews of psychometric properties and pragmatic utility of SDoH assessments among people with SSPDs. We aim to review those aspects of SDoH assessments. STUDY DESIGN: PsychInfo, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases were examined to obtain data on reliability, validity, administration process, strengths, and limitations of the measures for SDoHs identified in a paired scoping review. STUDY RESULTS: SDoHs were

Do better communication skills promote sheltered employment in schizophrenia?

Alongside various psychopathological symptoms and neurocognitive dysfunctions, communication skill impairments may be considered core feature of schizophrenia. Although many studies examined the relation between employment status and neurocognition in schizophrenia, we still know very little about the role of communication skills in vocational status among people with schizophrenia. The purpose of this study is to identify the most characteristic communication, neurocognitive and social cognition differences which separate the employed schizophrenia outpatients from those who do not work. The

Black-white disparities in health status in Missouri.

Historically, the overall health status as measured by life expectancy and infant mortality of Black and White Missourians has been significantly different. We analyzed birth, death, child death and communicable disease data to determine if Blacks have narrowed the gap in health status. The overall health status of Black and White Missourians improved over the last two decades. However, the gap in health status still remains, and in some cases, has gotten worse. This occurred despite the increase in health care financing through Medicare and Medicaid. To narrow the gap in health status between

Can hoarding be a symptom of social anxiety disorder? A case study.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding is defined as the excessive collection and failure to discard possessions of apparently little value, leading to clutter, distress, and disability. Although patients with hoarding typically may feel ludicrous for not discarding useless, and sometimes bizarre, possessions, we are not aware of any previous description of patients displaying hoarding as a result of social anxiety. METHOD: Single case report. RESULTS: In this article, we describe a patient with severe social anxiety disorder who displayed hoarding as a direct consequence of social anxiety-related beliefs and

Social networks, institutionalization, and mortality among elderly people in the United States.

This study focuses on the effect of social networks on institutionalization and mortality among elderly people in the United States. Data are from the Longitudinal Study of Aging (LSOA), which incorporates a baseline interview in 1984 and a follow-up interview two years later. The study population consists of a sample of 5,151 noninstitutionalized elderly people who were 70 years of age or older in 1984. Multivariate analyses using logistic regression revealed that social networks are negatively related to the likelihood of institutionalization and mortality when controlling for sociodemograph

Comparative impact of social isolation on mortality in adults aged 40 years and above with versus without metabolic syndrome: evidence from two large cohorts in the U.S. and U.K.

INTRODUCTION: Social isolation is increasingly recognized as a significant public health concern associated with mortality risk. However, whether the impact of social isolation on mortality differs between individuals with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of social isolation with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality (CVDM), cancer mortality (CAM), other cause mortality (OTM), and premature mortality in MetS and non-MetS populations using data from large cohorts in the UK and the US. METHODS: This study analyzed da

What interventions can improve social connections for military partners? A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Social connection is a key component of all people's well-being, but especially for that of military partners, who are required to navigate their lives without consistent support from their partner or extended family network. Military service can also disconnect partners from ordinary civilian life and affect their health, well-being, and employment status. Despite the understanding that social connection is a key part of promoting well-being, knowledge of how to support and drive social connectedness for this group is less well established. METHODS: This scoping review identifi

Breast cancer inequities: the intersectional role of social epidemiology and tumor biology.

Breast cancer disparities in outcomes remain a persistent challenge in the USA, with survival influenced by neighborhood context, access to resources, and the applicability of existing scientific evidence across populations. These disparities arise from complex, intersectional factors spanning social, structural, and biologic domains. While social determinants of health (SDOH) are strongly associated with breast cancer incidence and outcomes, the causality of biologic mechanisms underlying these associations remain incompletely understood. This review examines breast cancer disparities at the

A scoping review on the use of a participatory approach in interventions to combat overweight and obesity in low socioeconomic status communities.

PURPOSE: The burden of obesity on individuals and society has received much attention. However, most interventions to combat obesity as well as reviews focus on a (bio)medical approach. Applying an interdisciplinary approach that includes participation of the most heavily burdened low-socioeconomic status (SES) groups, are scarce. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify the characteristics and achievements of studies that applied a participatory approach to inform future development of interventions aiming to reduce obesity among low SES communities. METHOD: We conducted a scoping r

Closing the Gap: Digital Innovations to Address Hypertension Disparities.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Significant inequities persist in hypertension detection and control, with minoritized populations disproportionately experiencing organ damage and premature death due to uncontrolled hypertension. Remote blood pressure monitoring combined with telehealth visits (RBPM) is proving to be an effective strategy for controlling hypertension. Yet there are challenges related to technology adoption, patient engagement and social determinants of health (SDoH), contributing to disparities in patient outcomes. This review summarizes the evidence to date for RBPM, focusing on the poten
