A 75-year-old man visited our hospital with the complaint of lumbago due to bilateral hydronephrosis. Computed tomographic (CT) scan revealed a thick and homogeneous retroperitoneal soft-tissue mass with isodensity to the muscle, which extended from around the kidneys to the bladder. His serum IgG4 level was extremely high. He also had proptosis. He was diagnosed as having retroperitoneal fibrosis due to IgG4- related sclerosing disease, and treated with glucocorticoid and azathioprine. After 2 months, partial regression of the mass was observed.

Laryngeal trauma is rare and can occur as an isolated injury or as part of multitrauma. On the basis of airway patency, it is decided whether the patient needs rapid surgical intervention or whether the patient would profit from preoperative imaging done with multidetector row multislice thin section computed tomography with multiplanar reconstruction in the soft-tissue and bone window setting. Grading the fracture pattern from minor isolated to multiple dislocated fracture lines helps to plan individual treatment options and to prevent long-term voice complications.

A model where bone resorption is driven by stimulus from fluid flow is developed and used as a basis for computer simulations, which are compared with experiments. Models for bone remodeling are usually based on the state of stress, strain, or energy density of the bone tissue as the stimulus for remodeling. We believe that there is experimental support for an additional pathway, where an increase in the amount of osteoclasts, and thus osteolysis, is caused by the time history of fluid flow velocity, fluid pressure, or other parameters related to fluid flow at the bone/soft tissue interface of

We report four cases of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRPF) effectively treated with steroid therapy. Computed tomographic (CT) scan showed the density of soft tissue mass enveloping the abdominal aorta in four cases. From radiographic findings we made a diagnosis of IRPF. Management with steroid therapy over three months improved general symptoms and radiographic findings. Prominent calcification in the wall of the abdominal aorta indicated that the arteriosclerosis was related to IRPF. We measured serum antibodies for Chlamydia pneumoniae in four cases.

The paper summarizes the results of examination of 169 patients referred to the surgeon in the period from 1 till 47 days after medial facial (MF) trauma by using spiral computed tomography (SCT) and the method of laser stereolitography (LSLG). The actual aspects of diagnosis and treatment are marked; the methods for the analysis of injuries of soft tissue structures and adjacent areas while orbit trauma are developed together with the methods for determination of degree of enophthalmos. Also discussed are the possibilities of SCT and LSLG in visualization of MF injuries and planning patient t

Computed tomography (CT) ist the primary modality of choice for imaging patients with acute head trauma. Lesions of the soft tissues and of the bones can be assessed more precisely than with other imaging modalities. With magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) additional information may be gained especially in subacute and chronic posttraumatic conditions. Urgent indication to perform a CT examination depends on the patient's history and on the mechanism of trauma. Image interpretation has been performed in the context of typical pathologic effects of trauma and with respect to potential therapy.

Injuries of the temporomandibular joint are mostly due to injuries or fractures of the mandibular condyle. Fractures of the skull base involving the temporomandibular joint are rare. Classification of fractures refers to their anatomical positions and the presence or absence of a luxation. Further, it is important whether the fracture is intra- or extra-capsular. The primary imaging method should be orthopantomography. As for therapy planning, especially surgery, also evaluation of soft tissue is necessary, computed tomography is the imaging method of choice. For diagnosis of complications or

Paget's disease is a common entity but osteosarcoma arising in Paget's disease is an infrequent complication. Primary osteosarcomas are typically long bone tumours and the skull is rarely affected. A case with malignant transformation of Paget's disease of the skull and an unusual clinical presentation is reported. Computed tomography scans of the tumour area show interesting results. Main features are: an intensive sclerotic reaction of the host bone, an inner and outer spiculation of the calvarium, radial ossifications in the soft extracranial mass, and spotty calcifications and ossification

Most necrotizing (malignant) external otitis (NEO) occurs in diabetic patients and is commonly caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We report an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) patient with NEO caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in which computed tomography (CT) showed destructive petrous bone involvement and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the ear discovered extensive soft tissue and facial nerve involvement. Dedicated MRI studies of the ear in this type of pathology provide new insights relating to nerve dysfunction, that cannot be obtained with CT.

Acute mastoiditis is a complication of acute otitis media that produces air cell opacification and coalescence on computed tomographic (CT) imaging. This appearance, however, is nonspecific and may be seen in patients with infection and tumor. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can aid in differentiating the two on the basis of differences in tissue signal characteristics and by showing the presence or absence of an associated soft-tissue mass. In this report, we demonstrate the utility of MRI as a complementary imaging modality to CT in the diagnosis of a solitary plasmacytoma of the temporal b

MR tomography yields better contrasts for soft tissues than other imaging methods. This allows a reliable measurement of the volume of brain structures, in particular for the ventricular system and e. g. structures in hydrocephalic states. Therefore a method is proposed for segmentation and volume estimation of MR tomograms that is implemented via a computer program. This method provides an accurate determination of the volume tested on multiple-slice-images of normal patients and a phantom. The substantial features and possibilities of this program usable for all kinds of structures in MR-tom

As a diagnostic and follow-up method of bone marrow diseases in children, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) possesses special importance. It is characterised by high sensitivity in detecting bone marrow lesions, high soft tissue--bone tissue contrast, sharp demarcation of intraosseous lesions and visualisation of vascular structures without application of contrast medium. Thus it is able above all to take on the findings of radionuclide bone scanning, computed tomography and angiography. In the detection of pathophysiological alterations of the corticalis and of calcifications it is less reliab

Elastofibroma dorsi is a pseudotumorous connective tissue mass that characteristically arises between the chest wall and the inferior angle of the scapula. Its long axis is typically craniocaudal. Two patients are illustrated, each presenting with a fixed subscapular mass. Computed tomography showed each mass as elongated, incompletely marginated, and of soft tissue density deep to the inferior angle of a scapula. The latissimus dorsi and an underlying layer of fat were posterolaterally elevated inferior to the tip of the scapula. After incisional biopsy excluded sarcoma, each mass was locally

Traumatic acute arterial subdural hematomas are rare and are associated with a high mortality rate. The authors report a case in which the initial computed tomographic (CT) scan examination failed to reveal a hematoma. Within the subsequent 4 hours, while recovering from anesthesia given so that hemostasis of bleeding soft tissue injuries could be obtained, the patient suddenly developed bilaterally dilated pupils, both nonreactive to light. A repeat CT scan then revealed large subdural and intracerebral hematomas. The case is discussed and the pertinent literature is reviewed.

Radiological images of muco-pyoceles of the maxillary sinus often simulate those of malignancy. This presents a diagnostic dilemma for rhinologists. The authors studied the computed tomographic findings of 13 cases of muco-pyoceles of the maxillary sinus by obtaining two different images, one of the soft tissues and the other of the bony structures. The bony sinus walls are distended and thinned in many cases by long-standing intramural pressure. The most reliable finding in the diagnosis of muco-pyoceles is the smooth clear-cut margins of bone erosions occurring in the sinus walls.

Two hundred fifty-three patients with lumbar pars interarticularis defects were studied by multiplanar high-resolution computed tomographic scanning (CT/MPR). Two hundred thirty patients had one or more pars defects at L5, 21 at L4, and two at L3. Within this group of patients, 21% had more than 5 mm of disk bulge or herniation, 34% had foraminal encroachment, and 34% had indentation on the neural canal from soft-tissue or bony callus formation.

The computed tomographic (CT) findings of two popliteal cysts are presented, and the correlated anatomico-pathologic changes are discussed. The characteristic findings include thin, well-defined cyst wall, fluid density contents, central septum or septi, and medial popliteal location with mediocaudal extension. These findings, however, may vary due to herniation or rupture of the synovial membrane, gelatinous cyst contents, or metaplastic change of the cyst wall. Differential diagnoses include liposarcoma, popliteal aneurysm or hematoma, thrombophlebitis, xanthoma, fibrosarcoma, or other soft

One of the many urgent cases requiring immediate attention is the possibility of continuous bleeding into the sphenoidal sinus via a carotid cavernous fistula (CCF). Computed tomography offers a necessary and quick diagnostic method for such soft-tissue structures. Difficulty in CT diagnosis is enhanced by the limitations inherent in certain diagnoses. The article shows that safe diagnosis can be achieved in acute postoperative CCF with great shunt volumes. When diagnosing spontaneous cases we must consider the clinical data to differentiate CCF from other causes.

The value of computer tomography (CT) in the diagnosis of diastematomyelia (DM) was studied in our own clinical material. Thirty-one patients with congenital spinal anomalies were examined; in 21 a DM could be demonstrated. CT has two major advantages in the radiological investigation of spinal abnormalities, such as spinal dysraphism and DM: 1. Cross sections of the spinal canal can be obtained without overlying opacities and 2. The demonstration of intraspinal soft tissues structures, corresponding to their attenuation characteristics and the relative differences in absorption of the x-rays.

INTRODUCTION: By using a combination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) of the lumbar spine, it is possible to distinguish between spinal stenosis caused by bone compression and specific soft tissue epidural intraspinal lesions that cause localized spinal canal stenosis and neural compression. Examples include facet cysts and yellow ligament hypertrophy. Many of these patients are elderly with medical comorbidities that make open surgery problematic.
MATERIALS & METHODS: This is a study of patients with predominantly soft tissue stenosis being treated with target
