OBJECTIVE: Rhodiola rosea (Russian Rhodiola/Golden Root) is a high mountain plant from the arctic regions of Europe and Asia which has the active substance phenylpropanoide. It has sedative, anti-depressive, drive-enhancing and stress-modulated properties stimulating the distribution of dopamine and serotonin; in combination with other drugs, an increase of side effects and risk profile has to be expected.

This article reviews directive interventions for paruresis, the inability to urinate in the proximity of others. As in treatments for other anxiety disorders, historical interventions have included the use of paradoxical intention and several different forms of exposure. The results of pharmacological treatment have not proven promising. Although a multidimensional treatment model has been recommended, little attention has been paid to treating cognitive components of the problem. In this paper, a single case is described in which cognitive components of the problem of paruresis were evident.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to compare psychological profiles in 17 patients suffering from idiopathic pruritus ani with a control group of 28 patients showing secondary pruritus ani.
METHODS: The two groups completed the Mini-Mult personality test and results were compared using chi 2 test and analysis of variance.
RESULTS: The mean hypomania and depression scale scores were greater and smaller respectively in the idiopathic pruritus ani group. Nevertheless, the percentage of abnormal psychological profiles was not significantly different between the two groups.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined presenting symptoms, precipitants and comorbidity in a sample of 28 adolescents (21 females, 7 males) who met criteria for clinically significant panic attacks.
METHOD: A semistructured psychiatric interview was used to gather information about symptoms and precipitants, from which probable diagnoses were derived for each case. Thirteen subjects also completed a computerized version of the Diagnostic Interview for Children and Adolescents.

Hirsutism is recognized to cause profound distress in affected women, due to cosmetic and psychosexual implications. Eight cases of glossodynia arising in the context of an endogenous depression are reported and the case histories of four of them are presented. Somatic features, in particular the sensation of having a burned tongue, were by far the most prominent and tended to relegate the depressive symptoms to the background. The clinical picture can usefully be classified as the coenesthetic form of a depressive psychosis of late life. A good treatment response can be achieved with antidepressants, possibly in combination with neuroleptics.
