We describe a young patient with an unusual intramedullary lesion filled with eosinophils. The 21-year-old man developed chronic myelitis without optic neuritis or signs of systemic or infectious disease. A spinal biopsy was conducted because of the progressive extension and pseudo-tumoural aspect of the lesion. Histopathological analysis of the biopsy specimen revealed a severe inflammatory process with macrophages and numerous eosinophils. Simple trichilemmal cysts or pilar cysts and pilar tumors are relatively rare entities often under-reported by pathologists. The pilar cysts are thought to proliferate and progress to pilar tumors. These pilar tumors can further undergo malignant change. AIM: To find a medium to mark the surgical margins and orientation of complex specimens that is reliable, easy to use, safe and inexpensive.
METHODS: Several different paints, dyes and pigments were tested. A series of pigments supplied by SICPA Australia Pty Ltd, when fixed to the specimen in acetic formalin, was used on over 7000 complex specimens.
RESULTS: The pigments were easily visualised macroscopically on gross specimen and processed blocks and microscopically at the surgical margins. Review of early material confirmed its stability.

BACKGROUND: One of the important causes of childhood diarrhoea is cryptosporidium, a parasitic pathogen which is usually overlooked. This study was therefore designed to show the importance of modified acid fast stain in the diagnosis of cryptosporidium in childhood diarrhoea.
METHODS: Stool samples from 300 children with prolonged diarrhoea were examined by modified acid fast staining a long with wet mounts in saline and iodine.
RESULTS: Out of 300 samples five (1.7%) were diagnosed as positive for cryptosporidium.

To date, the details of human sensory innervation to the pharynx and upper airway have not been demonstrated. In this study, a single human oro- and laryngopharynx obtained from autopsy was processed with a whole-mount nerve staining technique, Sihler's stain, to determine its entire sensory nerve supply. We present evidence that biotin-dextran (BD) provides good fast retrograde tracing in the rat sciatic nerve. Using BD injected distal to a crush injury of either tibial or common peroneal nerves, spinal cord motoneuron counts after 48 h compare favorably with counts obtained using horseradish peroxidase. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate commonly used histologic stains used to detect Pneumocystis, including Diff-Quik (DQ), Grocott's Gomori methenamine silver (GMS), Papanicolaou, and hematoxylin and eosin (H&E).
STUDY DESIGN: The study compared the ability of these stains to detect alveolar casts.
RESULTS: Although there was a slightly higher average number of casts detected with DQ, the difference between this stain and GMS was not significant. Both Papanicolaou stain and H&E showed significantly lower averages. Some differences in H&E may be related to differences in preparation.

The histomorphologic features, immunohistochemical reactivity, and DNA content of four cases of a rare tubular variant of seminoma are presented. These neoplasms were characterized by a predominantly tubular architectural pattern that resembled yolk sac tumor, embryonal carcinoma, and sex cord-stromal tumors.
