Corneal astigmatic effects of conventional recession vs suspension recession ("hang-back") strabismus surgery: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in refractive error after strabismus surgery occur secondary to changes in corneal curvature. The change in refractive error is usually transient but may lead to a temporary decrease in vision. We compared the change in corneal curvature following strabismus surgery in eyes utilizing a suspension (so-called "hang-back") recession technique to eyes undergoing conventional recession surgery. METHODS: Sixteen patients undergoing bilateral medial or lateral rectus recessions were prospectively entered into the study. One eye was randomly selected to undergo conventional stra…

Histology of the monkey lateral geniculate nucleus after unilateral lid closure and experimental strabismus: further observations.

The histology of binocularly and monocularly innervated portions of the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) was studied after unilateral lid cl … ehavioral, neurophysiologic, and histologic changes following unilateral lid suture or experimental strabismus could be correlated in all animals studied. The data indicate that the order of susceptibility of the LGN to reduced or abnormal visual input early in life appears to be: dorsal laminae greater than ventral laminae greater than monocular segment.

Utilizing deep learning from mobile phone photos for early detection of horizontal strabismus: a screening approach.

To develop and validate an artificial intelligence pipeline for binary screening of horizontal strabismus versus orthotropia using smartphone-acquired facial images and geometric landmark analysis. This two-stage system combines Real-Time Detection Transformer (RT-DETR) to localize nine ocular landmarks per eye across three gaze directions (left, center, right), and supervised machine learning classifiers. A feature set of five biometric ratios was derived from coordinates including the canthi, limbi, and corneal light reflexes. The model was trained on facial images from 150 participants (96 …

Gestational age, maternal smoking, neurological lesion and retinopathy predict strabismus at age 5.5 in preterm children.

AIM: Prematurity is a risk factor for strabismus, but the roles of intermediate factors like retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and neurological lesions are less understood. We aimed to identify neonatal risk factors for strabismus at age 5.5 in preterm children. METHODS: Data were extracted from the étude épidémiologique sur les petits âges gestationnels 2 cohort, a French prospective population-based study of preterm children born in 2011 with gestational age of 34 weeks or less. Strabismus was recorded during a medical interview at 5.5 years. Using a directed acyclic graph, intermediate and …

Carotid blood flow in abnormal head posture: a prospective observational study exploring facial asymmetry in strabismus.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether abnormal head posture (AHP) induces changes in common carotid artery blood flow (CCBF), thereby leading to the development of facial asymmetry in the setting of strabismus and ocular torticollis. METHODS: This was a prospective observational study of pediatric subjects in an urban ophthalmology clinic who underwent bilateral carotid artery ultrasound examination with spectral Doppler in an upright, straight-head posture and with a head tilt of 30°-45° to the right and left. The primary outcome was change in carotid flow on the side of the head tilt. The seconda…

Surgical treatment of Pitt-Hopkins syndrome associated with strabismus and early-onset myopia: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Pitt-Hopkins syndrome (PTHS; MIM #610954) is a rare genetic neurological disorder. Myopia and strabismus have been reported in approximately 50% of PTHS patients. No studies have reported details about the required surgery for PTHS with strabismus and early-onset myopia. Here, we retrospectively reviewed the surgical management of two patients with PTHS combined with strabismus and/or early-onset myopia. CASE SUMMARY: A 5-year-old girl presented with congenital esotropia and left eye myopia, and the second girl was a 5-year-old girl who presented with intermittent exotropia. Genet…

GWAS Hits for Bilateral Convergent Strabismus with Exophthalmos in Holstein Cattle Using Imputed Sequence Level Genotypes.

Bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmos (BCSE) is a malformation of the eyes and is recognized as a mild but progressive disorder that affects cattle in the first two years of life. This most likely inherited disorder is rarely described in cattle resembling autosomal dominantly inherited forms of human progressive external ophthalmoplegia (PEO). In German Braunvieh cattle, two linked genome regions were found that could be responsible for the development and/or progression of BCSE. The goal of this study was to phenotypically characterize BCSE in Holstein cattle from Germany and Swi…
