Prevalence of substance use disorders and associations with mindfulness, impulsive personality traits and psychopathological symptoms in a representative sample of adolescents in Germany.

Adolescence is a critical phase for the development of substance use disorders (SUDs). For Europe and Germany, there are limited data on problematic substance use from representative youth samples. Trait mindfulness is relevant in buffering against substance use-related problems and associated deficits in self-regulatory control. The objective of this study is to estimate 12-month prevalence rates for SUDs in a representative sample of adolescents in Germany and to examine associations with mindfulness and related factors such as stress, impulsivity, sensation seeking and symptoms of psychopat

Service providers' perceptions of barriers to the implementation of trauma-focused substance use services for women in Cape Town, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: A substantial number of South African women with substance use disorders also report psychological trauma related to experiences of physical and sexual abuse. Trauma-focused substance use programmes may support recovery from co-occurring substance use disorders and psychological trauma, yet integrated programmes are not widely available in South Africa. As part of the process of developing a trauma-focused substance use programme for South African women, we explored service providers' views of the feasibility of implementing trauma-focused substance use interventions within usual c

Substance use and teen pregnancy in the United States: evidence from the NSDUH 2002-2012.

INTRODUCTION: Few, if any, studies have systematically examined the relationship between substance use and teen pregnancy using population-based samples. We aim to provide a comprehensive examination of substance use among pregnant adolescents in the United States. METHOD: Employing data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health between 2002 and 2012 (n=97,850), we examine the prevalence of the past 12-month and the past 30-day substance use and substance use disorders among pregnant and non-pregnant adolescents (ages 12-17). We also examine psychosocial and pregnancy-related correlates

Alcohol and anxiety: subtle and obvious attributes of abuse in adults with social anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Previous research has found a relation between social anxiety disorder and alcoholism but recent work found no differences in drinking levels among socially anxious individuals, dysthymics, and normal controls. Using a more sophisticated measure of substance abuse may further explicate the relation between social anxiety and drinking. We examined aspects of substance abuse in treatment-seeking individuals with social anxiety disorder or panic disorder (psychiatric control group) as well as nondisordered individuals (normal control group). We used the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-

Psychopathological stability of personality disorders in substance abuse patients treated in a therapeutic community.

The objective of this study is to explore the stability of personality dimensions in a selection of psychoactive substance abuse patients during treatment in therapeutic communities. The baseline assessment was conducted 15 to 20 days from the start of therapeutic community treatment, and the second assessment was conducted 3 months after admission. The Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory III was used to assess personality dimensions. At 3 months, a reduction was observed in the mean severity scores of most personality dimensions in both patterns and clinical syndromes. Caution should be exer

Parenting outcomes of parenting interventions in integrated substance-use treatment programs: A systematic review.

The high prevalence of women in substance use treatment programs with children, and the co-occurring negative physical and mental health outcomes associated with substance use, led to the development of integrated substance use treatment programs that target a range of women-specific issues. Integrated programs typically offer some type of parenting component, although the level of parenting services varies widely. Existing reviews have found positive child and parent outcomes following integrated treatment programs in general, although studies were not selected on the basis of whether they in

Using the Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) to Predict Gambling Disorder Among U.S. College Students.

The Alcohol, Smoking, and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) screening tool has not previously been used to evaluate risk for gambling disorder (GD). We aimed to assess the level at which each specific substance involvement score (SSIS), measured by ASSIST, most optimally predicted GD among U.S. college students. Data were analyzed for 141,769 students from the National College Health Assessment (fall 2019-spring 2021) utilizing multivariable logistic regression models. Sensitivities and specificities were utilized to find optimal cutoffs that best identified those with GD, overall

Prenatal cocaine exposure and substance use disorder in emerging adulthood at age 21.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal cocaine exposure (PCE) has been associated with child and adolescent externalizing behaviors and early substance use, yet few studies investigated its association with substance use disorder (SUD) in emerging adults. The present study examined the association of PCE with SUD in emerging adulthood, and whether childhood externalizing behaviors and adolescent substance use mediated the relationship. METHODS: Participants were 367 (187 PCE; 53% female) adults at age 21, primarily urban African American who were recruited at birth. PCE and exposure to alcohol, tobacco, and ma

Quality Standards, Competency Models, and Curricula of Nursing Education and Training in Addiction Nursing: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: The nursing profession is crucial to both the prevention and treatment of substance use disorders. Higher education in nursing in the field of addiction varies among countries, and the quality of these programs also differs. It is of vital importance to observe how professional capacity and quality care in addiction nursing (AN) are being secured. The objective of this scoping review was to explore educational interventions (EI) within AN, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a focus on describing the curricula, key competencies, quality standards, and the competency

Substance use in supportive oncology and its impact on clinical outcomes and care.

Substance use spans a continuum from occasional use to hazardous use and clinically defined substance use disorders, and it can shape outcomes across the cancer care continuum. This structured narrative review synthesises evidence on how alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and opioids relate to cancer outcomes relevant to supportive care, including diagnostic timing, adherence, toxicity, symptom burden and survival. Methods We searched PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science for peer-reviewed studies published between January 2010 and April 2025 and narratively synthesised findings given heterogeneity in stu

A Scoping Review of Interventions and Available Programs for Justice-Involved Women with Substance Use Disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review scopes existing research examining substance use-related services for women in carceral settings. The paper focuses on gender-specific care and programs not specifically tailored for women that analyze results by gender. The paper also suggests recommendations for future research based on identified gaps in the literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Existing literature indicates that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of women in correctional settings over the past four decades. Compared to women in the general population, those in correctional settings have

Characterizing the Substance Use Prevention Funding Landscape in the United States: a Cross-Sectional Study of National Prevention Network Representatives and Practitioners.

Youth and adolescent substance use remains a persistent public health challenge in the United States; the delivery of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) is critical to improving related negative consequences. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration funds a large portion of the implemented substance use prevention interventions in the United States by supporting a funding infrastructure that plays an important role in the adoption and scaling of interventions. Prevention intervention developers and researchers need to understand this infrastructure and its influence on lo

Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Substance Use Prevention Among Adolescents: A Systematic Review of Emerging Evidence.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Artificial intelligence is increasingly explored as an alternative approach for adolescent substance use prevention, yet it remains unclear whether existing applications demonstrate sufficient maturity, effectiveness, or public health value. We conducted a systematic review to synthesise the emerging evidence on artificial intelligence-based approaches for adolescent substance use prevention. We conducted a systematic review in line with PRISMA 2020 and SWiM guidance. We searched PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, IEEE Xplore, African Journals Online, Google, and Google Scholar from inc

Beyond Better Data: A Call for Improved Responses to Alcohol and Other Drug Harms Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Communities in Australia.

People from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds are recognised as a priority population in Australia's National Drug Strategy due to their potential vulnerability to alcohol and other drug (AOD)-related harms. National data consistently report low levels of AOD use and treatment utilisation among CALD populations. This discrepancy is likely due in part to limitations in data capture, such as the narrow definitions of CALD variables used, as well as issues of underreporting. Current reporting does not always align with Australian Bureau of Statistics standards and may also

Experimental and observational evidence on substance use and metacognition among adults: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Metacognition - the capacity to monitor, interpret, and regulate cognitive processes - is essential for adaptive behavioral regulation. Evidence on how substance use relates to metacognitive functioning remains heterogeneous across substances and study designs. This systematic review synthesized evidence examining the relationship between substance use and metacognition among adults. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and Web of Science from inception through March 2026. Eligible studies included experimental and observational designs enr

[Addictions : what's new in 2025].

The field of addiction medicine is rapidly evolving due to shifting drug markets and emerging patterns of use. In Switzerland, the possible arrival of highly potent synthetic opioids highlights the need for interprofessional preparedness, particularly through wider training in naloxone use. At the same time, the rise in recreational ketamine use brings an underestimated urological complication: ketamine-induced cystitis, whose early detection is crucial. Growing digitalisation also fosters compulsive pornography use, where craving plays a key role; new tools such as the PCE-S scale help to bet

Ketamine uropathy: an update on pathophysiology, complications, and treatment options.

Ketamine is a potent anaesthetic drug that has been used for decades. Ketamine abuse is an increasingly common problem, particularly among young people. Over one quarter of ketamine users will have at least one bothersome urological symptom, with heavier and longer use leading to potentially irreversible damage to the lower and upper urinary tract. Hence, this study carried out a narrative review focusing on ketamine-induced uropathy pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment options. It was found that ketamine uropathy is an inflammatory condition affecting predominantly the bladde

Implementing a Service Bundle in High-Impact Settings for People Who Use Drugs: Successes and Promising Practices.

CONTEXT: Testing and treatment services to prevent, mitigate, and treat infectious disease complications related to drug use are available. However, more work is needed to identify strategies that can improve service access in settings that serve people who use drugs (PWUD). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify successful strategies for implementing integrated infectious disease and substance use disorder (SUD) treatment services in various high-impact settings (eg, syringe services programs, SUD treatment centers, mobile clinics) to PWUD. DESIGN: Thematic analysis of successes and resolved chall
