Liquid storage of miniature boar semen.

The effects of liquid storage at 15 degrees C on the fertilizing ability of miniature pig semen were investigated. Characterization of ejaculated semen from 3 miniature boars was carried out. Semen volume and pH were similar among these boars. In one of the boars, sperm motility was slightly low, and sperm concentration and total number of sperm were significantly lower than in the others (P < 0.01). Seminal plasma of the semen was substituted with various extenders (Kiev, Androhep, BTS and Modena) by centrifugation and semen was stored for 7 days at 15 degrees C. Sperm motility was estimated

Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis of In Vitro Matured Oocytes From Cyclic and Prepubertal Gilts Reveals Distinct Molecular Patterns.

In vitro embryo production is a key tool in reproductive biotechnology, enabling genetic improvement, basic research on early development, and the generation of biomedical models. Despite high rates of nuclear maturation achieved during in vitro maturation (IVM) of porcine oocytes, inadequate cytoplasmic maturation continues to limit oocyte competence and subsequent development, particularly when using oocytes from prepubertal gilts (PG). The molecular basis underlying differences in oocytes from cyclic females remains incompletely understood. In this study, we performed a comparative transcri

Fecal metatranscriptomics and virus isolation reveal picornavirus diversity and evolution in Japanese wild boars and pigs.

To elucidate the enteric virome and its relationship between wild boars and domestic pigs, metatranscriptomic analysis and virus isolation using a swine testis (ST) cell line were conducted on fecal samples collected from 300 wild boars and 363 pigs in Japan between 2017 and 2023. Inoculation onto ST cells induced cytopathic effects (CPEs) in samples from 47 wild boars and 178 pigs. Deep sequencing of fecal supernatants and CPE-positive culture supernatants revealed numerous viral sequences belonging to the order Picornavirales (picornaviruses; PVs), which became the focus of this study. Estimating invasive species elimination probability and abundance trends using multiple operational data streams.

Models of species distribution and abundance are important for evaluating and planning regional management of species with heterogeneous densities. Feral swine (Sus scrofa) are a widespread and destructive invasive species in many countries, causing damage to ecosystems, agricultural resources, and property, as well as being a vector of numerous diseases that pose risk to human, livestock, and wildlife health. In the United States, the state of Missouri has a spatially heterogeneous distribution of feral swine, with some regions of moderate to high density and some regions at or near eliminati…

Host Community Traits Driving Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus Maintenance in Iberian Ecosystems.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne zoonosis of significant public health concern, maintained in complex multihost systems shaped by ecological, climatic, and anthropogenic drivers. In the Iberian Peninsula, changing land-use patterns and biodiversity loss may be reshaping host communities in ways that alter local transmission dynamics. We conducted a landscape-scale study across 18 sites, integrating serological surveillance of wild ungulates (n = 1461; 69.4% wild boar, 30.6% red deer) with camera-trap monitoring of mammalian communities, land cover analysis, and climatic d

Molecular detection of Torque teno sus virus from domestic pigs in North Central, Nigeria, 2022-2023.

Torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) is a ubiquitous virus affecting domestic pigs and wild boars, classified into two major species: TTSuV1 and TTSuV2. In Nigeria, there is a paucity of information on TTSuV. This study investigated the prevalence, genetic diversity, and phylogenetic relationships of TTSuV genotypes in domestic pigs in Nigeria, as well as those found globally. A total of 94 (47 serum and 47 tissue) samples collected from pigs across the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria were analysed using PCR and sequencing techniques. Phylogenetic analysis was conducted to compare the sequences wit

Evaluating protein digestibility of biorefined forage crops in growing pigs: effects of plant species and precipitation methods.

Biorefined forage proteins show potential as protein alternatives for monogastric animals. Achieving high protein quality is central for the effective integration of alternative protein sources in food production systems. However, there is a limited understanding of how plant species and processing parameters influence the quality of the extracted proteins. The aim of the study was to evaluate the ileal digestibility of CP and amino acids (AA) in biorefined red clover, festulolium and lucerne precipitated at 85 °C. For lucerne, the study additionally aimed to determine the effect of alternativ

Pig jejunal single-cell RNA landscapes revealing breed-specific immunology differentiation at various domestication stages.

BACKGROUND: Domestication of wild boars into local and intensive pig breeds has driven adaptive genomic changes, resulting in significant phenotypic differences in intestinal immune function. The intestine relies on diverse immune cells, but their evolutionary changes during domestication remain poorly understood at single-cell resolution. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and marker gene analysis on jejunal tissues from wild boars, a Chinese local breed (Jinhua), and an intensive breed (Duroc). Then, we developed an immune cell evaluation system that includes immun

Fibre-rich ingredients differing in physicochemical properties modulate digesta transit and digestion kinetics in pigs.

Physicochemical properties of fibres can affect digestive processes such as digesta transit, thereby affecting nutrient digestion kinetics. We evaluated the effects of (1) insoluble fibres differing in cell wall composition and physicochemical properties; wheat straw (WS), softwood flour (WF), and sunflower seed hulls (SF), and (2) addition of pectin to coarse insoluble fibres from straw (WSP), on the mean retention time (MRT) of digesta fractions and nutrient digestion throughout the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of pigs. Twenty-four boars (49.1 ± 2.96 kg) were allocated to one of four diets,

A Systematic Review on the Occurrence of Babesia spp. and Anaplasma spp. in Ticks and Wild Boar from Europe-A 15-Year Retrospective Study.

The wild boar (Sus scrofa) has experienced significant population growth as well as geographic expansion across Europe over the past 15 years, leading to increased concerns regarding its role in the transmission of zoonotic pathogens. Among these, Babesia spp. and Anaplasma spp. are of particular importance due to their impact on both wildlife and domestic animals. This study systematically reviews the prevalence and distribution of Babesia and Anaplasma spp. in wild boars and associated tick vectors across multiple European countries, synthesizing data from literature published between 2010 a…

Effects of dietary supplementation of different levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid on reproductive performance, glucose intolerance, and placental development of gilts.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation on reproductive performance, glucose intolerance, and placental development of gilts during mid-late gestation. Based on the principle of backfat thickness consistency, 124 gilts at 65 d of gestation were assigned to three dietary groups: CON (basic diet, n = 41), LGABA (basic diet supplemented with 0.03% GABA, n = 42), and HGABA (basic diet supplemented with 0.06% GABA, n = 41). The litter performance, glucose tolerance, placental angiogenesis, and nutrients transporters were assessed. The LG

Integrating Multi-Omics Data to Identify Key Functional Variants Affecting Feed Efficiency in Large White Boars.

Optimizing feed efficiency through the feed conversion ratio (FCR) is paramount for economic viability and sustainability. In this study, we integrated RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and genome-wide association study (GWAS) data to investigate key functional variants associated with feed efficiency in pigs. Identification of differentially expressed genes in the duodenal and muscle tissues of low- and high-FCR pigs revealed that pathways related to digestion of dietary carbohydrate are responsible for differences in feed efficiency between individuals. Differential open chromatin regions identified by ATA

Reconstruction and analysis of the transmission network of African swine fever in People's Republic of China, August 2018-September 2019.

Introduction of African swine fever (ASF) to China in mid-2018 and the subsequent transboundary spread across Asia devastated regional swine production, affecting live pig and pork product-related markets worldwide. To explore the spatiotemporal spread of ASF in China, we reconstructed possible ASF transmission networks using nearest neighbour, exponential function, equal probability, and spatiotemporal case-distribution algorithms. From these networks, we estimated the reproduction numbers, serial intervals, and transmission distances of the outbreak. The mean serial interval between paired u

Examination of Salmonella Prevalence in Pigs Through Rye-Based Feeding and Coarser Feed Structure Under Field Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Salmonellosis is the second most commonly occurring bacterial zoonosis in Germany. Rye in pig feeding offers new possibilities for addressing that issue due to its high content of non-starch polysaccharides (NSPs). These are fermented in the intestinal tract to specific fermentation products, which seem to have bacteriolytic effects against Salmonella. A coarse feed structure can display synergistic effects. METHODS: Seven conventional pig fattening farms increased the rye content (40%-70%) while limiting the amount of fine particles (maximum of 20% ≤0.25 mm). Samples from pigs

Isolation and Characterization of Lactic Acid Bacteria With Probiotic Attributes From Different Parts of the Gastrointestinal Tract of Free-living Wild Boars in Hungary.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the microbiota play an important role in human and animal health and, when used as probiotics, can contribute to an increased growth performance in livestock management. Animals living in their native habitat can serve as natural sources of microorganisms, so isolation of LAB strains from wild boars could provide the opportunity to develop effective probiotics to improve production in swine industry. In this study, the probiotic potential of 56 LAB isolates, originated from the ileum, colon, caecum and faeces of 5 wild boars, were assessed in vitro in details. Antimicrobial resistance profiles of Streptococcus suis isolated from pigs, wild boars, and humans in France between 1994 and 2020.

Streptococcus suis, an emerging zoonotic pathogen, causes invasive infections and substantial economic losses in the pig industry worldwide. Antimicrobial resistance against 22 antibiotics was studied for 200 S. suis strains collected in different geographical regions of France. Most of the strains (86%) showed resistance to at least one antibiotic with a low rate of resistance to fluoroquinolones, penicillins, pleuromutilin, and diaminopyrimidine-sulfonamides, and a higher rate to macrolides-lincosamides and tetracycline. Multi-resistance patterns were observed in 138 strains; three of them b

Phylogeography of Brucella suis biovar 2 with focus on Slovenian wildlife.

Brucella suis commonly infects swine but occasionally also other animal species and humans. Wild boars are the most important reservoir of B. suis biovar 2, continually infecting susceptible hosts through close contact. Nevertheless, the genetic diversity of B. suis in wildlife remains understudied. Here, we typed 17 Slovenian B. suis biovar 2 isolates obtained in 2017-2019 from wild boars (n = 16) and a hare (n = 1) using whole-genome sequencing (WGS). To assess the global phylogenetic diversity of B. suis, we compared them to 126 publicly available B. suis genomes. All Slovenian isolates fel
