Former studies on the effects of physical exercise, physical and occupational therapy (PT, OT) and speech and swallowing therapy (ST, SwT) in Parkinson's disease (PD) have demonstrated little or uncertain effects. New pathophysiological concepts have been developed. Recent controlled high-level studies demonstrate improvement of mobility and balance after training of muscular strength and endurance, trunk control, and amplitude and rhythmicity of movements (treadmill). Attentional and cognitive strategies were found to enforce body awareness and improve movement sequences. Dance, sensory (audi

The use of a rubber dam is an essential procedure when treating root canals, and not using it may compromise the success of the treatment, as well as the patient's health. This report presents a case in which a K-file was accidentally swallowed during an endodontic procedure, performed without the use of a rubber dam. Given the absence of immediate clinical complications, the subject underwent a chest radiograph. The file was located at the oesophagogastric junction and was later removed by endoscopy. In addition to the clinical repercussions, this example also illustrates the ethical-legal as

While previous research has shown that air-pulse stimulation of the oropharynx facilitates saliva swallowing in young adults, the effects of air pulses in older adults have not been examined. Responses to air-pulse stimulation may differ in young and older adults given age-related changes in sensation, swallowing physiology, and swallow-related brain activation. Therefore, this study sought to determine the effects of oropharyngeal air-pulse stimulation on saliva swallowing rates in 18 healthy older adults. Saliva swallowing rates were monitored across six conditions: baseline without mouthpie

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the nature and extent of variability in tongue movement during healthy swallowing as a function of aging and gender. In addition, changes were quantified in healthy tongue movements in response to specific differences in the nature of the swallowing task (discrete vs. sequential swallows).
METHOD: Electromagnetic midsagittal articulography (EMMA) was used to study the swallowing-related movements of markers located in midline on the anterior (blade), middle (body), and posterior (dorsum) tongue in a sample of 34 healthy adults in 2 age groups …

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop a sensor sheet for measuring tongue pressure during swallowing and to clarify its usefulness by comparing it with a conventional pressure sensor installed in the palatal plate.
METHODS: A tactile sensor system was used for the construction of the measuring system. Based on our preceding study, a T-shaped sensor sheet with 0.1mm thickness, five measuring points (three points on the median line, two points on the posterior-lateral part) and three sizes based on the morphological analysis of 60 maxillary casts was designed for application on the hard

BACKGROUND: the absence or delay of the swallowing reflex is considered a significant sign of dysphagia. Therefore, the therapy traditionally applied to these cases consists in increasing the intra-oral input through cold touches (0 or 00 larynx mirror) on the inferior portion of the inferior third of the palatoglossus arch.
AIM: to identify in healthy young individuals which oropharyngeal regions are more sensitive and which stimulus is more efficient in triggering the swallowing reflex.
METHODS: the swallowing reflex was analyzed based on the following stimuli: spatula, cold 00 larynx mirr

Most bony fishes rely on suction mechanisms to capture and transport prey. Once captured, prey are carried by water movement inside the oral cavity to a second set of jaws in the throat, the pharyngeal jaws, which manipulate the prey and assist in swallowing. Moray eels display much less effective suction-feeding abilities. Given this reduction in a feeding mechanism that is widespread and highly conserved in aquatic vertebrates, it is not known how moray eels swallow large fish and cephalopods. Here we show that the moray eel (Muraena retifera) overcomes reduced suction capacity by launching

AIM: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of the size of tablets on the status of swallowing and handling during taking medicine among frail elderly persons.
METHODS: The subjects of the present study were 73 frail elderly persons. After they conducted simulation taking medicine, they determined the desirable size of tablets using subjective evaluation. Their behavior and the time required for the simulation were examined. We also evaluated their activities of daily living using the ADL20, and swallowing ability using the repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST).

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the utility of clinical swallowing examination (CSE) measures for detecting aspiration as defined by videofluoroscopic swallowing examination (VFSE). This study, involving 165 participants, is a follow-up to a previously published investigation of 60 participants. Findings are compared with that investigation as well as with other research on CSEs. The results suggest that clinicians can make an accurate judgment of the occurrence of aspiration in most post-stroke patients. However, ruling out aspiration when it is absent appears more problema

We present a case of a 49-year-old man who experienced invariably reproducible paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia during swallowing. Because beta-blockers and multiple antiarrhythmic drugs failed to prevent the episodes of this tachycardia, we performed catheter mapping and ablation. After placing multiple decapolar catheters, when the patient swallowed a few sections of an orange, intracardiac mapping revealed atrial premature beats and atrial tachycardia that lasted for a few seconds and arose from an ostial site of the right superior pulmonary vein. After the right superior pulmonary v

Although unilateral vocal fold palsy (UVFP) is a common problem, data relating to swallowing dysfunction are sparse. We reviewed the clinical findings (method of presentation, underlying diagnosis and position of the vocal folds) of 30 patients and conducted a follow-up telephone survey. Outcome measures used were direct visualization of fold function, position and compensation. In addition, standardized speech and language assessments for swallowing dysfunction and dysphonia were noted and compared to presentation. Our study indicates that 56 per cent of patients with UVFP have associated dys

OBJECTIVES: Dysphagia is an important consequence of many diseases. As some of the muscles of deglutition tend to be deep to the surface, needle electrodes are typically used, but this limits the number of muscles that can be simultaneously recorded. Since control of swallowing involves central pattern generators (CPGs) which distribute commands to several muscles, monitoring several muscles simultaneously is desirable. Here we describe a novel method, based on computing the independent components (ICs) of the simultaneous sEMG recordings (Muscle Nerve Suppl 9 (2000) 9) to detect the underlyin
